Valve Co-Founder Bashes PS3

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell slammed the PS3 without abandon, dubbing the system a "total disaster." At the same time, he voiced his respect and admiration for Nintendo, believing they'd have a larger installed userbase than Microsoft "by Christmas of next year."

The full quote is as follows:

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a 'do over.' Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.' The happy story is the Wii. I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, Nintendo Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy. I really like everything that Nintendo is doing."

Ouch. Perhaps Mr. Newell has no interest in reading statistics, but it appears the PS3 is doing just fine in terms of sales. We also fail to see how the PS3 launch, in terms of either numbers, software, or hardware availability, was any worse than the 360 or Wii. The 360 experienced massive defective issues – while the PS3 remains quite reliable, based on a complete lack of complaints – and the Wii had the lowest-reviewed launch software batch in history (according to The 360 barely fared any better.

But hey, we're all entitled to opinions…right?
