Crytek: Crysis 2 Performing “Slightly Better” On PS3

Although Crytek has admitted to difficulties in jamming their massive CryEngine 3 onto consoles, they have said the PlayStation 3 has done "slightly better" in receiving it.

This is in comparison to the Xbox 360 version of the game. As studio business development lead Carl Jones told PSM3 , not only has the studio not encountered some of the problems other designers have had with Sony's machine, they've gotten "slightly more performance" out of the PS3. That being said, Jones added that Crysis 2 would become the best looking title available "on every platform" and thus far, those who have seen it are forced to agree. Said Jones to the magazine:

"We haven't found it more difficult to develop for PS3. We're lucky in the fact that we've come to the generation slightly later than other people – the ones who were trying to build the first technology and games were surprised at how different the PS3 was. We took our time and worked out the right way to approach it.

At the moment, we're getting slightly more performance from PS3 compared to 360. I'm very confident that products using CryEngine 3 are going to come out as the best looking, or at least in the top three, on every platform."

"Best looking" on the PS3 could be tough, what with titles like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Killzone 2 , Heavy Rain and God of War III already pushing the visual envelope this generation. But considering the power behind the CryEngine 3, we're certainly expecting a top 3 graphical performance from Crysis 2 . Anything less would indeed be a disappointment…

Finally, a third party developer who apparently knows that the cell is more than a souped up PowerPC. If Crytek is getting better performance from the PS3 – even with it's supposedly sub-par GPU, then the only conclusion available is that Crytek are making good use of the SPEs. And if I remember the comments from the fine folks at Insomniac and Naughty Dog, using the SPEs effectively is key to unlocking the performance of the PS3. Since both Naughty Dog and Insomniac are on their third generation engines on the PS3 and still think that there is more that can be done, you have to consider that Crytek may find even more performance with more experience on the PS3.

the only problem is multiplats seem to be going more for looking about the same this gen, no matter what has to be cut into crap, unless you count FFXIII.

The main problem I can think of when it comes to graphics on multiplatforms is compidibility. I mean we all know the PC, is the king of all but in many restrictions, but when it comes to 360 and ps3 it's close with ps3 leading a bit. Multiplatform games have to be limited because of the weakest consoles graphic output. You can chew more than you can bite, is what xbots are trying to say about their console. I'm pretty sure this game will be limited because of it running on all 3 systems, so there's really no point in arguing which console has better graphics, with Xbox 360 being the weak link.

I expect the graphic of Crysis 2 to blow everyone away, seriously, this is Crytek, the studio that set the bar for graphics in gaming.

I don't know about many of you guys but Crysis 2 will be better looking than UC2 or GOWIII.

But then again, maybe it could be the PC version that will look better than everything but not the console version……

PC version will be the best looking game to date, X360 version will be the best looking game it has and the PS3 version will be amongst the top 3 best looking games it has.

its ridicilus that someone always comparing console with pc version. because pc hardware can be upgradeable.

may be we should see how the grapic console version of crysis 2 can versus with pc. its amazing you know that.

crytek i love ya and all but for fu**s sake shut up with this PR talk and release the fu**ing game!
honestly these guys talk enough sh*t to give dan greenwalt from turn 10 a run for his money!
the next words i want to hear from cryteks mouths is "the release date for crysis 2 is september 24th!"
anything but that, i dont want to hear, so get back to working on your game, and deliver on what your promising!
what happened to the good old days where developers were modest, were all go and no show?
i think having one arron greenburg is more than enough thank you!
