Konami Working On Mysterious Silent Hill Installment

It's one of the freakiest, most successful survival/horror franchises in existence and now, it appears we'll finally get another installment.

Unfortunately, we know next to nothing about it. Konami apparently confirmed to Gamer.nl that they are currently working on a new Silent Hill . But besides knowing that it isn't being developed by Silent Hill: Homecoming studio Double Helix, we're really in the dark when it comes to details. We're not even sure which platform they're targeting although of course we're hoping for a PlayStation 3 release. Homecoming was decent but it lacked in a few areas and wasn't quite the experience we had been hoping for. This time around, we want a game that takes full advantage of the powerful new hardware, launches freakish frights at us from the intimidating shadows and above all else, maintains that Hitchcock-ian subtlety when it comes to instilling fear in the player. This series has always been about ambient effects; about always feeling uneasy regardless of the situation. You're always on edge. This is what we want from the new Silent Hill .

And now that it's apparently in the works, we'll start keeping an eye out for any information. Perhaps it'll be unveiled at E3…

Sounds cool enough, as long as its well executed I'm down for a purchase. I'll need a demo first though.

I liken the guys that make Survival/Horror games to the guys that are making these hack n slash RPG's instead of turn based, in the sense that all these guys have to do is deliver what the genre promises and if they do it well they get rewarded with rave reviews and tons of purchases. Look at Deadspace it was one of the few titles that were labelled Survival/Horror and actually delivered.

Have the first 2 showed up on the PSN yet cause I'm thinking of giving them a run through.

The first one is up there for $6, but the 2nd one was for PS2, so it's not going to be online. Both were great imo.

wait the 2nd was for ps2? I was almost positive that it was a ps1 game, and SH3 was the first one for ps2

Edited: never mind I checked amazon, must have got silent hill confused with RE or something

I really hope it's being developed by a reunited Team Silent, but perhaps that's a little too much to hope for. Origins, Homecoming, and Shattered Memories didn't seem to live up to the first four. As long as it will be scored by Akira Yamaoka, not all will be lost.

Well unless Komami hires Akira Yamaoka to score this game, he left Komami a little while ago. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Silent Hill in my opinion is the game that really developed the current platforms can sit on the throne of best Survival / Horror genre, if done well can dethrone Dead Space.

I have serious doubts this next installment will live up to previous games.

Origins was somewhat decent but Homecoming is SOOO lame…

Don't worry, abandon all hope, this next SH will go to the pleasefixme as well…

Confirmed, it will be crappy just because of that

i liked something you mentioned in particular Ben , what you said about how the ambience instills fear on you that stays, you are always on edge, and you are absolutley right, this is what i thnk most of us want on our "scary" games, personally

best horror survival game i have ever played was dead space , the game does so much to always keep you hearing things, and tricks with flickering lights and putting vents EVERYWHERE, then letting you know specifcally to watch out for them, that kind of stuff does so much to inmerse you, and the sounds are really important too, things like hearing scratching behind you on your home theather speakers really make you soil your pants jaja

My couch was a mess when that lady screamed in the elevator. Damn. Good times.

I never bought Homecoming because of the generally apathetic reviews and the fact that they wouldn't even let you invert the Y axis. Still, it's always nice to hear about another horror / survival game coming out. Hopefully it will live up to the standards of the early installments.

No World!

Silent Hill 1-4 took me to more darker and thrilling places than any other game I can think of. I like to act like Homecoming was just a joke, because the other games were awesome at what they were. Survival Horror at its finest. Please for the next installment, let the Japanese Develop for it, as I lost hope when The Western Developers failed to capture the true essence and atmosphere of SH. The Japanese know horror, and have proved it.

My thoughts exactly…

Homecoming was a joke

I found "The Room" to be impossible. You ran out of useful weaponry long before the enemies rose from the dead the third and fourth and ten thousandth time.

Yea, but then again the room became a Silent Hill title at the last minute. It was developed as a stand alone title. I think.

A series I never got into. From the noise coming from the fans, it looks to be a little late to be showing interest now.

Never too late…

Though it's not easy finding Silent Hill 3, I'll tell you that now

Great series though
Proud to have followed it since the very first game in 1998

go pick up the jan edition of gameinformer, it had dead space 2 on the front cover and has a really long interview with viscerals lead producer.

You honestly believe that I (the guy with an Isaac Clarke avatar) haven't been keeping up with Dead Space 2?

well than you should know that they have said multiple times theres going to be more action in DS2 than the first.
to what extent i dont know obviously but dead space did not scare me in the slightest.
so if anything it needs more horror elements, not less.
the last game i played that scared me was doom 3, and that was like what 4 freaking years ago!

Correction: It has always been about the art. The David Lynch style of storytelling and fear.

If it ain't team Silent, don't support. Their beautiful creation has been butchered.

OT: I got the original on PSN a while back so I'll keep an eye on this game.

Silent Hill as been the only franchise I have evr played to really honestly scare me shitless. That is (in my opinion) the only true HORROR/SURVIVAL games out there…. A ggo mention is something along the lines of Siren and recently Dead Space but SH still takes the crown.

Haven't played Homecoming yet but I would like to give it a go either way. Just hope that the new Silent Hill can maybe….just mayve be an PS3 exlusive…..?

Even thou that is basically an impossible though …just imagine what it will be like in 1080p with the PS3's power???

The reason that Homecoming lacked in areas is that it was held back by the X-box360. They built it to be compatible with the 360's hardware and never bothered to polish it up for the PS3, probably due to the lack of patience of the average consumer. I don't know how many times I've heard "This sucks! The game is out for the 360 but it doesn't come out for the Ps3 for another few months!" Usually the games come out at the same time nowadays. What needs to happen is they need to make a silent hill game for PS3 only and focus on utilizing all of the PS3's capabilities so that the other systems don't hold it back.
