The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced "Prince of Persia" movie may become the first great (or at least decent) big-screen adaptation of a popular video game franchise. But do you think lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal is a good fit?
Well, listen to what he has to say before making a decision. GeekSugar interviewed the Oscar-nominated actor and they spoke about why he opted to do the movie, his childhood gaming habits, and how great stories supersede fancy technology like 3D. Obviously, this role requires a good deal of acrobatic ability and some good old-fashioned comedy and cockiness; those familiar with the PoP series know all about these traits of the protagonist. Said Gyllenhaal on what initially drew him to this project:
"There are a lot of things. One was the character, 'cause for me, whenever I choose a movie it's the character. I thought — at least as it was written — [Prince Dasdan] was wry and funny and had a good time, but at the same time kicked some ass. But then I also like the idea that it was based on a video game. I like to do things that people have tried their hand at and haven't succeeded. Maybe it's a riskier thing to do, but I like that. And I knew that there would be a huge audience of people that I would be trying to appease and that kinda turned me on too. And we're bringing it to younger kids, kids who have never played the video game before and never experienced it."
The actor said he did play the original PoP but he's not a big gamer these days, although he does spend some time playing the Wii during his downtime. And when he was a kid, he said he "really loved Metroid" and "Zelda was super dope;" he even mentioned that classic gold casing. As for 3D, he added some interesting commentary involving story, in that without a good storyline, the technology really won't matter. We'd have to agree and we do have high hopes for the movie…maybe it can start a trend reversal. Cross your fingers.
I think the riskier side of movies based on games comes from the fact that most game based movies suck.
Make it a good movie..and the tickets will sell.
I don't know… Prison Break was a good show and the game sucked 😛

It works vice versa except for riddick ,that was done well IMO.
"And I knew that there would be a huge audience of people that I would be trying to appease and that kinda turned me on too."
Whoa there buddy, I don't want anything to do with that.
No no you got it all wrong. It's pretty clear that he's saying kids turn him on.
Lol, thats exactly what i thought when i read that, had to do a double take

I wish they would make a new onimusha game for the ps3 but not sure about a movie. I don't think hollywood remembers how to make a good movie.
he just has to have a wii -_- (yes, it's a bad thing, at least when you could have a PS3, maybe on the side would be ok.)
@ vicious54
yeah a new game would be badass. and you're probably right about the movie. i mean the only thing i know about it that sounds cool is that takeshi kaneshiro is supposed to reprise his role as samanosuke.
watch them run yet another game based movie into the ground. if they do that with onimusha i'll be pissed! >:(

I have high hopes for this one. Which is weird to say, since I usually have low expectations for movies based upon Video Games. I'll defiantly go see it, most likely even if it does end up being a bad movie.
Although I do enjoy the fact that Jordan Mechner is one of the writers for the film.

says the guy that stared in broke back mountain.
He's not like that anymore. Now he "likes to do things that people have tried their hand at."
lol lol lol
That and the money they threw at him.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a good actor. He has some flops and some good ones. Donnie Darko is a must see as well as Jarhead. If you haven't seen those movies, go check them out.
Donny Darko= Good.
Bubble Boy= Flop.
Never saw Bubble Boy, thank God.
I definitely recommend 'Brothers', too. It's an excellent flick.
I second tridon, he played his character very well, he was the most human character in the movie to me I could identify with in my life.
^.^
And on the side, the two girls play their roles greatly too (as in, they had substance) and to add, Tobey Maguire's really different in this movie, and lastly, Natalie Portman handles her role well too (along with looking really beautiful to boot XD).

Here's the problems with movies based on games
If a movie studio decides to follow the game storyline to the T, fanboys would complain why they didn't do something new or change up the game story a bit.
And if the movie studio decides to do something different i.e. Resident Evil fanboys whine about not using the storyline from the games.
And lastly hiring people like Uwe Boll to direct these movies, who totally jack up the movies.. Take "BloodRayne" for example he took a game with a simple enough to follow storyline and he made it a crap flavor pie.
i for one would be perfectly happy with them sticking strictly to the game script (major points at least, and restricting themselves from putting in too much filler)
"If a movie studio decides to follow the game storyline to the T, fanboys would complain why they didn't do something new or change up the game story a bit."
What movie has ever strictly followed the game. so to say we'd complain is an unkwon.
and as far as Resident Evil goes, that was just a terrible movie that contradicts itself way too much. RE had a simple and easy story and they sold out on the script.
Plus i wonder how the Majini from RE5 fit into this new movie. but i have to admit the effects for them look pretty badass.
This movie could go either way from what I've seen. could be pretty good, could suck. I'll wait to pass judgment.
Putting his role in Fruity Cowboys aside, I do have high hopes for the PoP Film. I am going to see it regardless of how it turns out. It seems like during the past few years, excluding only a few great ones, the movies being released have been total and complete crap in every aspect of a film. Either way I have loved PoP since The Sands of Time so I cannot wait.
Am i the only one who thinks that the makers or the bourne trilogy should make a syphon filter movie?
They'd be perfect for the job.
Don't know about the actors though, Can't say that matt damon fits the role of gabe.
Wasn't there a consideration for a middle eastern actor that was a real prince and was trained in horseback among other things?
I believe this is the article from some time back: http://news.filefront.com/actual-prince-of-persia-favored-for-lead-in-prince-of-persia-movie/
not that I'm against Gyllenhaal but i think the aforementioned person would've been more suited
Personally, I would love to see what kind of Prince of Persia movie Bollywood would make. I know one thing, they sure as hell wouldn't spend $100million on special effects and it would be action packed.
True but there wouldn't be any sex scenes.
F*ck me dirty, it took a half hour to sign onto the site. What in the mother of God is going on with that fake thing?
I don't get it.
He's trying to say that God has a Mother. Unowhatimsayin?
(Possibly Jenova)
Guy sounds like a loser
This sounds like it's worth a viewing on BluRay… From Netflix. That's the beautiful thing about todays entertainment. I get the incredible picture and audio quality most admire at a theater out of a frickin game console! Mmm.. BluRay.. Mmm.. PS3..
I think a Jerry Bruckheimer flick is just a slight step up from a Michael Bay flick. They slap on the slick camera filters and shoot a bunch of brainless action while actors recite some of the most cringe worthy cliches…..and people flock to see it. It'll do well at the box office.
Jake Gyllenhaal is certainly miscast as a Persian. But with hard core quotes like "Zelda was super dope", it looks like he's got great gaming street cred.
I think they both have a few rare gems. Like Worlds said before, "Throw enough sh*t at a wall and something is bound to stick".

"Zelda was super dope"
This is coming from the guy who is supposed to portray the main protagonist of Prince of Persia. And remember, this was one of the gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain AND he was also Bubble Boy, lol. He was in a movie that butchered a true story of a 12 year old boy and then became a gay cowboy with The Joker. What more do you need? lol
What the hell does any of that have to do with Zelda?
Death you're not making any sense, which is ironic since you're attempting to say he isn't making any sense.
its got its potential theres no doubting that, but will it deliver?
as for the next POP game im really disheartened and disappointed.
why the ^%$# is it rated PG?
i thought this was suppose to be a back to the original dark nitty gritty?
freaking halo is rated M, HALO! and thats not exactly nitty gritty, in fact its baby stuff!
so for this to be PG, im really disappointed.
ive been saying to myself its PoP they have NEVER released a bad PoP, but looks like this will be a first.
come on ubisoft who do i have to kill to get a PoP just like the 2 thrones, that was so dark, gory and humerus.
the best PoP game they ever released by far!!!!
It's not rated PG.
lol, don't the games and movies have different rating systems?
here it is rated PG, well according to EB it is.
Well one of my girl-frannnz thinks he's hot, and she's bangin' so it's all goodz for me Jakey +1.
-_-
