Not surprisingly, Sony claims that their new PlayStation Move motion-sensing tech offers something players can't find with either the Wii or the Xbox 360.
In speaking with the Financial Times after his MI6 conference speech, Sony boss Peter Dille said the biggest difference between Move and the rest of the competition "is the technology itself." For instance, while the Wii has been very popular, he says "it's not a very precise experience." In regards to Move, which utilizes both a camera (the PlayStation Eye) and a motion-control device held by the player, we'll get more precision and consequently, software that simply wouldn't work on the Wii or with Natal. Furthermore, Sony intends to market it towards both families and adult hardcore gamers and Dille actually believes Move will be a big draw for the avid die-hards:
"Hard-core gamers have looked down their nose at motion gaming: it’s not particularly satisfying for them because it’s not terribly precise or challenging, it’s more social. So we’ll have games that the whole family can play that are very social, but we’ll also be able to do hard-core gamer games via a motion device that has never been done before."
He's probably right about his first sentiment; most adult gamers who don't own a Wii (and have no intention of owning a Wii) sort of see motion-sensing as a pseudo-gaming hobby, designed more for kids and non-gamers than long-time fans of the industry. But with Move, it appears Sony wants to cater to as wide an audience as possible and although Dille says it's too early to determine a "killer app or signature game," Sony will apparently choose a game that is "the poster child or the best one to move Move." We'll certainly be interested to see how it turns out.
hell socom 4 proves that.
as ive said many times motion controls could really revolutionize shooters and make aiming much easier and much more precise.
i hope move catches on quickly and every game both first and third party supports move, but give us the option to use either move or the DS3.
dont force us to use either, because theres somethings move will make easier, and theres somethings move would make a pain in the a$$.
not to mention its not going to be cheap, so i cant see it catching on too quickly.
Looking forward to this, just got back from doing the family thing and have been subjected to looking like an idiot on the Wii with some dancing game. Always good to have some variety in the games we play.
As long as I always have the option to use the Dualshock3, I don't really care what group of gamers they try to appeal to with Move. I just hope it doesn't make the DS3 obsolete, I don't see too many benefits of motion control over what we already have.
I was watching a preview of the Move on X-Play. They covered The Shoot, Sports Champions, and Motion Fighter.
The Shoot preview was a liitle more in depth and very interesting. While The Shoot had everything you'd expect of a rail shooter, it also had some unique elements the Wii couldn't pull off thanks to the PS Eye element. Three things that caught my eye:
1) If you hold the Move extended in front of your body and spin 360 degrees, you'll unleash a special attack.
2) If you sidestep to the left or right, your onscreen character does the same.
3) To duck or kneel and shoot all you have to do is take a knee.
Pretty damn cool! The Wiimotion-plus can't do this. Obviously, this is the same type of thing M$ft is trying to do with Natal and all you hear from X-heads is how much of a fail the Move is compared with Natal. But I guess if you're 13 you might not remember the 10-year-old PSEye Toy on the PS2.
So how can Sony be copying MSft and Nintendo when Sony pioneered motion controls on consoles before either of those companies decided to do it… and Sony is the copycat? Some people just like to ignore facts.
I just looove the new commercial where they make fun of the wii and natal!
its a wicked smart move, it needs to appeal to everyone to be successful.
Natal is way better than Move, Milo and big red balls rule!
That's my psuedo xbox fanboy post feel free to thumb it down lol.
