Final Fantasy Versus XIII Boasts An Airship And World Map

Okay, so we're all a little disappointed that we didn't have the customary towns, world maps and traveling options in Final Fantasy XIII ; elements we've all come to expect from most RPGs.

But we remind you that FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama has said you can expect the return of those elements in the future, now that Square-Enix has a better grasp on this generation's hardware. Well, perhaps he was referring to Final Fantasy Versus XIII , the upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive that is starting to get a lot of attention now that FFXIII is out the door. And according to The Lost Gamer citing a recent Square-Enix Members Area interview with FF designer Tetsuya Nomura, the new entry in the legendary series will include an airship and a world map. Hey, now that sounds familiar! Said Nomura in response to a completion percentage question:

"Things are not connected yet, every part is moving along separately. However, we have gotten airships working over the world map."

Now, this could be interpreted in a variety of ways; perhaps he's not referring to player-controlled airships but even if that's the case, the mere mention of a "world map" is like a warm, friendly reminder of the way things once were in Final Fantasy . Of course, we still have to hear about the gameplay but you can bet we'll be looking for more info from here on out. Oh, and don't forget that Square-Enix has said former FFXIII team members have moved on to Versus now that the former project is complete. Things should start to roll!

What? You mean a real Final Fantasy CAN be done in HD when it's not forced to be gimped to work on a subpar system? The hell you say.

Yes. I really loved the freedom of FFXII. The world map in that game was an incredible scale, nothing short of amazing.

It would be interesting if FF vs XIII is going to have a world map like that, but with KH style of gameplay. While some may not agree, I'd certainly wouldn't mind.

Um I don't like the non-mention of towns, wtf's a map without towns? I don't know if any of these Fabula Nova Crystalis games are going to feel like true FF's to me until I start seeing some of the elements in these games that defined true JRPG's to begin with. I'd hate to get a rehash of FFXIII's battle system, I don't think it fit with the gameplay we're accustomed to. You cant tell much difference in magic, the summons aren't jaw-dropping compared to the amazing s*** they could have been, and they need to address the fact that the player is almost NEVER looking at the effects of their attacks, focusing mainly on life bars and paradigm shifts. It feels like FF for ADD. I did like the story though

If there is a world map, towns are a given. And yes, they've mentioned their towns before too.

Maybe an explorable airship, something comparable to a town maybe…SE needs to fill in a few gaps because a little while ago…towns were pretty much "impossible" (more of not worthwhile). However, here they are mentioning or restating the creation of a possible town-like entity only a few weeks later. Hmmm…if this airship turns out to be a town, I'm gonna need an explanation from someone in charge at SE. I guess we can't expect honesty to fill the offices of all game studios.

On a more positive note, if this is like a town, thank heavens!

world map + player controlled airship over world map + towns + free exploration + interesting battle customization/magic + Nobuo style music = Square soft's essential formula of JRPG success

if this happens, square will first time earn a nod from me for this gen; so far, imo, Lost Odyssey, Demon's Souls, WKC are the big three way above Square Enix's games this gen (Infinit Undiscovery, Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, FF13).

He left to form his own production company "Smile Please". It was a good move in the end seeing as SE disbanded there music division. He still gets contracted by SE, Plus it means him and "The Guch" Can work together. Win/Win

Come on guys, I have plenty of complaints about FFXIII but the music is *not* one of them. It may be different, but it certainly isn't bad. In fact, it's one of my favorite scores in a FF game to date. Masashi Hamauzu did a fantastic job.

the only thing that worries me is that they labeled ffxiii as a rpg and ff versus xiii as an action rpg. if ffxiii wasn't action enough to get that title, what the heck kind of gameplay will we get from versus?

*crosses fingers* please have good gameplay, please oh please!

Oh my fck*n god, Versus XIII news, and it's good news too! I'm so psyched for this game, maybe that isn't good, cuz there's the tiny chance that it might go multiplat and be way less awesome than I hoped… Let's just all pray for exclusivity, and I don't mean the timed thing, full blown PS3 exclusivity.

DeathOfChaos
DeathOfChaos

This is OLD news, though. I've known this since the beginning of February or near the end of January. I still have faith that this game is going to stay exclusive. If it goes Multiplat, then the 360 is gonna have to have like 10 discs. FFXIII was only like 18GB because of it only being on 3 DVD9 discs. That's just a terrible nightmare and even more of a reason to blame the 360 for it's linearity. I doubt Versus XIII will go to the XBox because by now, it would be a risk in every aspect that would be nothing but negative. They would have to cut the whole world map out as well as the airships and even have to take out the action RPG idea to suffice for more linearity or even to cut down the size of the game. So with all due respect, it would be more work to make it go multiplat and more costly than worth it, not to mention ruin most, if not all, of the work that they've done in the past 7 years. I'm not sure how many people know this, though I've said it before, Versus XIII has been in production since 2003. That's 3 years BEFORE Final Fantasy XIII. The guys in response to FFVII said to make all the towns, it would take 10 to 12 years, and I think after Versus XIII, they may know how to make these things a little quicker.

I gave you a thumbs up because I have played God of War 3 (and other exclusives).

I don't even want to board the train of thought when it comes to imagining if GOW3 was multiplat title..

No I did not, but how could they compress it so much? Damn… I know the PS3 version ran a little smoother and was a bit smoother in areas, not to mention clearer.

With all that compression I am not surprised one bit.

The CGI movies tell the entire story.

Thought I might add that.

Sharp Readies BD-100 Blu-ray Laser

Posted September 11, 2009 10:20 AM by Josh Dreuth

Sharp At the 70th Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics being held this week, Sharp announced that they have successfully created a Blu-ray laser diode which operates at a maximum of 500mW, enough to burn four-layer Blu-ray discs. This would allow for, when approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), Blu-ray discs with either 75GB or 100GB capacities.

Sharp was able to advance Blu-ray laser diode technology by using a new method to process the edge face of the resonator. Typically, the crystal in the semiconductor is protected by a dielectric film. The consumer electronics company found that by introducing an aluminum oxynitride divider, performance of the diode increased exponentially.

They have performed many test on the diode, operating it more than 1000 hours straight at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit) at full power, and have determined it ready for mass production.

The only hurdle now is the BDA will have to adopt the BD-75 and BD-100 into the Blu-ray format, but once that happens, Sharp hopes to have commercially ready products soon after.
