Some contrasting reviews and a lower-than-expected average critical score won't stop the fans, especially in the UK.
According to Chart-Track , Final Fantasy XIII shot to the very top of the UK sales charts last week, immediately following its March 9 launch. It quickly supplanted EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 , another excellent game that also debuted at #1 a week earlier. Other notable titles on the top ten list include Heavy Rain , the stellar PS3 exclusive that received glowing praise from critics and has continued to sell well after its February launch. Also, Aliens vs. Predator managed to crack the top 10 again, despite a lot of reviewers telling gamers to ignore the merely average production. Here's the list:
God of War III launches this week so you can expect yet another reshuffling of the top slots in just a few days time but for now, FFXIII is dominating. We don't necessarily disagree with the consumers, either; it's an awesome game and one well worth your time and money. But there will always be a vocal group that speaks out against its lack of a "Final Fantasy feel."

lol…

Man what does it say about the gaming industry when 3 of the games on that list are shooters and 3 are wii titles? To me it says gaming standards have gone way down hill.
If that many people are buying those games, it makes me worried for the future of gaming. What if companies start deciding that its easier and more profitable to makes those kinds of games.
If FF is willing to alter their game to be more shooter like, what else could happen? It's just scary to think about.
I've been thinking the same thing for a while now too, but then a game like Heavy Rain comes along and it restores my faith that there are still devs out there that are going against the grain and producing something different.
This is very true, I can only hope every day that more devs choose to be original rather than lazy.
Hey Ben
Are you guys reviewing Resonance of Fate. I'm still on the fence on this title because havent heard much….well, anything about it. Your input may help with that decision since i usually agree with your reviews. Does anyone know which is the lead platform. If ps3 is a port, i might have to scratch it off my list or maybe get it when its in the bargain bin.

They used multiplatform tools from the gound up making RoF, however, they have been featuring the PS3 version in all the demos/promos/ads/etc for the game.
Both versions will probably be identical, but if I had to bet, I'd say the PS3 version will be better. Either way, it won't be Bayonetta-fied, if that's what you're worried about.

thats good to know, but i think i have to wait till after day one to get it now. I'm falling behind on my final fantasy XIII playthrough. It just doesnt grab me like previous final fantasies. Im on chapter 9 right now. The first time i took a break from a final fantasy game, this time i am working on getting some trophies for bad company 2. That and i'm picking up god of war 3 this week and maybe assassins creed 2 at best buy since its 30 bucks now.
So basically i still have bad company 2, heavy rain, final fantasy 13, and god of war SERIES to go through before i can get to resonance of fate.

I was also wondering about Resonance of fate. It's piqued my interest because it seems like it might have more of a turn-based style of gameplay.
@ Ben would love to hear about a review and even if no review is coming, at least your thoughts on the game in general.
It seems turn based, but you actually move your character across the battlefield and can chain together teammate's attacks depending on how they move in conjuction with eachother. Also I think distance from the enemy has to do with damage delt to your enemy and to you. Sounds like it will make for some good strategy in combat.
that does sound very interesting, love me some strategy.

Finally, a review is up!

FF vii remake with a world map like gran pulse FTW
well well well, the Xbox 360 version of FFXIII is nowhere to be seen
ps3 sold 54% and xbox 360 46% of sales if it wasn't for the piracy issues on 360 it would have sold more than the ps3

lol i knew i would get thumbed down even though im a ps3 fanboy
By the way, thumbs down means thumbs up now
Thank you
Man after reading through a majority of the posts on here, it makes me rather sick to like the PS3 as much as I do. No matter what system you own, even the elitist will condemn you on your own platform. Dude Modern Warfare 2 is selling better than any game to date. A single title that has sold over 25 Million copies is pretty nuts. I'm glad Final Fantasy is #1 and it deserves it, and it's definitely a Final Fantasy game. I blame the long 5 year gap that people have fell out of touch with what a Final Fantasy is supposed to be. If your a fan you'll know.
The Jonas Brothers sell tons of records, does mean their music is good.
Uhm obviously if it sold that many then yes it is good. Obviously not to you or I, but it's good that it sold that many. Where did that relation come from?
Your logic isn't quite correct. Lots of people buy things hoping they are good, but end up disappointed.
I paid to go see a movie in theaters, it was rated #1 at the box office, but the movie sucked. All reviews for it said it sucked, it was ripped apart, but lots of people went to see it before the reviews were out, does that make it good?
Just saying that sales don't necessarily = quality. How many times have people rushed out to buy a game on release day, only to turn around and sell it a few days later.
Just some examples to ponder.
What movie are you referring to? See this is a matter of opinion when you say something sucks, it may be good to someone else. That's the problem with the internet. People think what they say or believe is fact. I'm stating that "Gamers" think Final Fantasy should have stayed the same. I'm simply stating that it could not, it had to change. You want to know how bad it would have been if it stayed turn based? Check out the reviews on Lost Odyssey. It would not have helped Final Fantasy one bit to stay old school. Now that of course is my opinion, but the facts of Lost Odysseys abysmal reviews exists.

As a musician i can honestly tell you their music is NOT good. A majority of people have very bad taste. Not the other way around. Again just because something sells well doesn't automatically mean its Good. Its irrelevant.
As a musician myself, which you could have read on another topic, I agree, but it's a factor of opinion. You cannot dictate what is good or bad for other people. That's a bit arrogant. I will fully go on with my opinion that games have to change. In the case of Final Fantasy this was inevitable. We all knew it was coming. If anyone has the sense to see why games have to change, look at the review scores for Lost Odyssey and see what critics were saying. If that's how people are these days then you will see they were no favorable. I loved Lost Odyssey because it was "Old-School" RPG, but the company suffered because it was "Old-School". Just saying, once again.
Ben, what happened to Arnold's review for FFxiii? Did his feelings mirror your's, and he just didn't feel the need to put up the review? Or is he still playing it? Or is he having difficulty finding time to play it because he has GOW3?
Yeah I was wondering the same thing… You said it would be done around the weekend right? Arnold's not doing it anymore?
I'm gonna jump on this bandwagon too and beat the "Where's arnolds review," horse to death.
We still want to read it, if he's taking his time, I can wait, we are all just anxious.
parapa the rappa with the ps3 move and 3d = best selling game… if only such a thing existed
Hmmm, Imma shoot UK gamers if GOWIII doesn't top the chart this week.
I can't believe the hatred out there at the moment for FFXIII, God Of War and Heavy Rain.
It seems like every games sites comments section has errupted into an all out fanboy vitriolic war to the death.
Someone seems to have released the orcs and every decent comment is drowned out by a sea of noise.
I couldn't read any comments section about Heavy Rain without getting bomarded with serious spoilers. The hatred at the moment being spouted about God of War and the PS3 is just astounding.
It might be just me but it seems a lot worse than usual.
Present company excepted 🙂
I went out of my way not to read anything about Heavy Rain before I played it.
I would suggest doing the same if you haven't played/had it spoiled yet.

My wife just left to get GOWIII!!! Cant wait till she gets back! SURE i have to wait till she puts down the controller before I get to play… HEY! no "You like to watch" jokes
wow BFBC2 at number 2?
did not see that comming, i guess i underestimated the popularity of mediocre overdone war styled FPS.
anyway, i hope heavy rain picks up and keeps on selling, i need another experience like that yesterday!
