Yeah, yeah, let the speculation and rumors begin. Just keep the insanity to a minimum, m'kay?
First of all, you should visit Square-Enix's Japanese site ; if you can't speak Japanese (welcome to the club), check out the translation and explanation over at Andriasang . Thing is, it appears the company is recruiting for a new game engine; the headlines read, "Seeking the highest level of talent" and "New generation game engine development project starts." They go on to talk about the emergence of powerful consoles dedicated to never-before-seen visuals, and that video game graphics could eventually exceed that of movies. And in the future, "reform" won't be enough; we'll need an actual "revolution."
"At Square Enix, in anticipation of the appearance of next generation platforms, we've started development on a new generation game engine for competing beyond the level of the strong developers throughout the world, and are presently seeking a lot of talent."
Available jobs include game engine system programmer, 3D graphics core programmer, online system programmer, technical artist, and more. They all ask for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 experience but obviously , the most intriguing part about that ad is Cloud's visage tacked to the front of it. Of course, Cloud is essentially the mascot for the company at this point, so it probably doesn't mean anything but even so, it's worth noting. …right? I mean, we could all leap to absurd conclusions and say the first project that utilizes this new engine will be a Final Fantasy VII remake. That'd be fun.
OK a question, does anyone else wonder about this quote that Ben so helpfully italicized?
"At Square Enix, in anticipation of the appearance of next generation platforms, we've started development on a new generation game engine for competing beyond the level of the strong developers throughout the world, and are presently seeking a lot of talent."
So, are SE already starting their work on their graphics engine for the console generation to come?
Kinda hoping for that FFVII remake as well, but I temper that with reality. I'll tell you though, if I were Sony, I'd get all of SE into a room and hand them a large check in return for an exclusive remake of FFVII, with an option on sequels.
TheHighlander… I perked up reading this article…
What comes to mind… well with the ATI and nVidia GPU's now beginning to include 500+ cores on a single wafer we are getting to the point where we will be generating CGI high definition visuals during gameplay and not just in-game engine cut scenes…
I trip over to the nVidia site will reveal the extraordinary power of Fermi… 512 cuda cores alone, can you imagine this card in SLI format on a PC rig… can you also imagine the cost.
The FERMI provides real time polygon tessellation… a huge jump in real-time mesh density scaling; you won't see a circle object look like an octagon… incredible.
So maybe the first glimpse of getting an engine ready for PS4 hardware? Maybe Sony has already handed over a white paper to the developers of what to expect for new generation hardware?
I think the speculation starts now 🙂

If Sony is readying a new console for the 2014 timeframe, they have to be designing now because they will need to begin manufacture in 2013. Obviously if they intend to bring a new console earlier then everything shifts back a bit. I bet you're right in that Sony will have at least told it's primary partners what the design parameters are.
FF7 remake bundled with launch PS4. Next console generation over before it begins.
@JofaMang
Agree, 10 million PS4 sold in 1 month.
ATI are leaps and bounds ahead of nVidia in terms of PC Graphics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cpwYMH8seI&hd=1 imagine scenery with that kinda detail.
Neither ATI or nVidia are ready for the introduction of real time ray tracing in games. If the next wave of consoles make the leap to that technology – which to me seems logical, the most important component in the system is the main CPU(s), the GPU becomes a service processor that's there largely for any full frame processing, filtering and anti-aliasing and finally displaying each frame. Personally, if I were Sony I would sit down with IBM and work out whether or not a four Cell system had enough power to real time ray trace at 720p/1080p or not, and if not what's needed to meet that goal. To me that would be the final step in terms of a games machine of any kind.
Actually, if I were Sony I wouldn't trust IBM anymore, especially after what we learned from one of IBM's chief designers on the Cell chip.
He admitted that M$ft came in and said it wanted a chip similar to the Cell but with some modifications for the 360. He details the initial disgust of the Cell team over IBM's betrayal of its Cell partner Sony but how they ultimately did what their IBM bosses wanted and shared the Cell architecture with the 360 chip team.
There was an interesting book about all this corporate espionage.
If I were Sony, I'd use AMD or some other company.
I really don't understand how M$ft hasn't been litigated out of business over all its deceitful and theft of other's intellectual properties and its borderline hostage taking of every industry it enters, from Windows to IE to Real Player to the Zune M$ft hasnât passed on stealing someone else's ideas than basically forcing manufacturers to make its products the default programs on 99% of PCs.
Sure, M$ft hasn't been able to bully some of its competition out of business or a smaller market share (like it did with IE or Real Player) like the Ipod or Tivo but it sure tried.
M$ft has never met another companyâs product it didnât steal.
Eh, I'd think Cid would be the mascot, he's a staple in every game ;D LOL jk. but I'd except it more to just be a FF symbol or something if it was going to just be a banner or something as I wouldn't think they'd just put Cloud on there for no real reason other than popularity. Maybe another spin-off of the FF7 universe or something, who knows. But I don't think SE needs to be thinking THAT far ahead, unless they have no intention of making another FF game this gen and are preparing for the next one…..
Don't want a FFVII remake
Just move on to FFXV already
Squeeeeenix really likes spending a lot of money lol…and it'a always on "over the top" stuff
Reminds me of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, where they almost went bankrupt
anywaaaaaaaay next-gen consoles are 3 or 4 years away

Oh crap, dont mention the spitits within.
(vomiting)
Ps4 FF7 Tech demo. Lawl.
Those might be Barrett's eyes in HD. You never know.
a bit premature no?
Considering that most (key word there) of the RPGs they have released have not demonstrated powerful graphics and sound, compared to others (UC2 & MGS4 come to mind), I think they're jumping the gun a little bit.
Why anticipate something that you haven't done a lot (or not very well)?

Man if you go read the full article it leads me to believe something different than a ff7 remake.
Here's my speculation. FF7 MMo. Yup they are looking for someone who knows how to handle online as seen in MMO's.
Watch now as the world screams in anger as they receive a ff7 mmo instead of the remake they've been waiting for.
Sure they are coming out with ffxiv, but this is a long term plan for next gen consoles apparently so we probably won't be seeing this for another 6 years.
On the other hand it could just be Wada messing with our heads again.
That would fu**ing suck so bad, lol.
one thing id really like to see $E do is a action game like ninja gaiden.
love that game, its a shame its really the only one of its style we need more "clones" if you will.
thats one game id really be interested in, id be interesting to see their side of the genre, how they interpret it.
Brave Fencer Musashi was awesome….
Platfomr: ps1
It also got a sequel, but heard it wasn't as good (not sure though)
cant remember if i played that or not, such a long time ago.
i dunno it just seems to me that a action fast paced sword fighting game would really suit them.
and god knows we need all of those we can get, since ninja gaiden is really the only one of that style.
i miss the old ps2 days where there were so many ninja styled games now theres barley any.
tenchu was one of my favorite series, id kill to see it come back.
o and medievil, im actually making a game very similar to that at tafe for my assignment.
Drakengard. That was an awesome action RPG. They've got Neir coming out, though haven't heard much of that Japanese one for a while >_>
great i'm good at playing their games. they should hire me to play.
forget about next generation, forget the sharper graphics than movies, that is not why Square soft succeeded in the 90s and early 2000s, conversely square enix's RPG going downhill not because it has crappy graphics or it does not have the next gen technology. the key reason why their RPGs are falling apart is because this westernized JRPG thing, and the globalization greed, the first fix is to get rid of Wada.
Regarding the top talents, i think it is already there, Square's top telent is the now "exiled" legendary Hironobu Sakaguchi, and the legendary music composer and free lancer Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda. Mitsuda has composed some of the greatest game music which is the Chrono Trigger music. If Square can get back those with the existing Tetsuya Nomura, and get rid of Wada, and stop westernizing JRPGs, and bring back all the towns, full turn based system, free exploration (cough FF13, cough), a world map system etc in the RPGs. Then Square will revive and gain back the crown of being RPG king, and their first coming back is by making a new Chrono Break exclusive on the PS3. 😀

Tetsuya Nomura FTW!!!
Sorry, just had to get that out.
I have faith in Versus XIII. With their world map and towns and all that…just hearing about it made me really wish for it even more, lol.
It's good they're looking for the "highest level" of talent. Not like all those other companies that advertise for "average level" of talent. 🙂
I wonder if they've got some spec's on the PS4 or something? Seems like it would be hard to create and engine for it if you had no idea what it would be like.
I just hope SE get their act together with this, in the 6th gen I can easily put them in the top 5 best developer/publisher.
But for this gen I'm not even sure if they can make my top 10 if I think about it properly.
Seems more like "We need new developers cuz we got our asses kicked by games like GOW or UC2" so they're just trying to catch up with the standards of the generation.
Yup, this is the proof. FFVII remake confirmed.
IDK world remember there's still one last game missing to complete the FFVII circle. Anyway I just want the final game, the remake and I can happily go back to the lifestream
In the words of Admiral Ackbar, "It's A TRAP!"
What in the hell? Working on a new game engine? SE sure knows the meaning of wasting time. Just take the FFVIII engine and upgrade it to true HD visuals. That way you have towns, awesome card battling system, FMV, side quests, fantastic summons and fingers. Then pump out a great story once a year.
New engine… for WHAT? So all the gamers in the world can go play something else for five years while you try to figure out where you went wrong?
Cuz you know, they had so much fun wasting their time making Crystal Tools work for the PS3, then making it work for the 360.
Sqaure-Enix is also having talks about a Final Fantasy XIII-2. So who knows whats up their sleeve.
Another failure?
Aww hell, remember X-2? X was awesome then in X-2 Yuna got somekind of Britney Spears Sindrome, so that means that in XIII-2…Snow…
*facepalm*

They should make a new awesome engine that's only capable with the next Playstation, to avoid having to cut content from the final fantasy which will release on that platform, seeing as the next box will still have dvd's to keep the costs down, and it's not like call of duty takes up that much room, so the bots won't mind anyways.
I hope it wont be a FFVII remake, because if they make an FFVII remake, they should have all the original people. Though if it's just skilled coders, then it should be good then. God of War III apparently took up 50% of the PS3's power, and apparently do to the way the game was encoded and all. If they get people who are good at coding up games that do a lot with what's given. The depth of hat FFVII remake would be amazing if they go some coders who could tap into the hardware that Santa Monica only tapped half way into could tap into it 100%, that game would be the best! Versus XIII already seems to be doing well in it's side of the gaming world. I'm hoping that Versus XIII outdoes God of War III so that Square Enix finally shows they still know something. Also wouldn't mind hearing about a Kingdom Hearts III soon after Versus XIII, they would have all that knowledge from Versus XIII to implement into a game that's supposed to be played in about the same style.
Shame the headline can't read…..
"SE seeking talent for now-vacated President's position"
I want Kingdom Hearts 3 already.
