GoWIII Expected To Be The Best Selling PS3 Exclusive

God of War III is a little over a week away, but we already have a slew of glowing reviews and the anticipation of many, many PlayStation 3 owners.

PS3 exclusives haven't exactly heated up the sales charts in the past, but that was usually due to the much smaller user base. Even now, while the PS3 routinely outsells the 360 since the price drop, there are still about twice as many 360 owners as PS3 owners in the US. However, as the PS3 ownership group continues to grow and massive exclusives like God of War III drag down some of the highest review scores of the generation, we should expect thing to change. Said EEDAR vice president Jesse Divnich :

"Uncharted 2’s sales were unprecedented, selling more units than any other previous first-party title on the PS3, but because of its small install base great games like Uncharted 2 will always fall short in comparison to multi-platform titles and exclusives on other consoles. However, as the PS3’s install base continues to grow, we can expect future blockbusters such as God of War III and Gran Turismo 5 will set new records for the console."

That really doesn't surprise anyone, as GoWIII has a big pre-order lead and the game certainly appeals to a wide demographic of gamers. Both Divnich and Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter expect huge sales for SCEA's new masterpiece. Divnich says GoWIII could top 2 million sales in its first three months of availability, which would make it the fastest selling PS3 exclusive thus far. Pachter agrees and adds that both GoWIII and Gran Turismo 5 "have more mass market appeal than Uncharted 2 ." For the record, Naughty Dog's landmark title should be closing in on around 4 million sold; it was announced last month that it had surpassed 3.5 million, so…how high can it go?

Anyway, I think most of us expected GoWIII to sell the best of all the exclusives, right?

As much as I love God of War, and have God of War 3 on preorder, I have to disagree and I speak not only by personal preference but also from sales history perspective.

The best selling exclusive for Sony should be Gran Turismo 5, without a doubt. Look at the history, GoW (1+2+COO) has sold…less…in it's lifetime than any _1_ of the full GT releases.

GT1 – 10.85 mil
GT2 – 9.37 Mil
GT3 – 14.89 mil
GT4 – 10.52 Mil

GoW 1+2+COO (This includes sales of the God of War Collection) – 8454000

I strongly believe (and seriously hope) that GoW3 does much much more strongly than it's predecessors. But, to say it has a chance against GT5…I dunno, seems a bit daft. Either way, both are fantastic exclusives to have launching in the same year!

What I took from Ben's article was this.

Ben isn't saying GOW3 will sell more than GT5. He's saying it could become the best selling PS3 exclusive CURRENTLY.

I wasn't necessarily calling Ben daft, more the analyst who came to this conclusion. Guess I kind of did though, sorry Ben.

I don't think there's any question about whether it will or won't. I'll call it right now, it'll be in the top 5 within weeks. For exclusives*, the PS3 really hasn't sustained huge sales on a title for very long. Right now the highest selling exclusive title MGS4 is only at 4.59 million units sold. So, as I said, it shouldn't have any problems getting into that crowd with the publicity it's seeing.

*Don't really have access to PSN#'s, but it's highly possible that the best selling PS3 exclusive is GT5 Prologue, the retail versions at 3.6 mil and it's been avail for D/L since launch.

My older brother's Xbox 360 died yesterday. LOL. He's 21 and I'm 2 years younger than he is. He has about 15-20 games for his 360. When he informed me about his second 360's YLOD, I said to him, "that's what you get when you buy sh*** technology". Today he tells me he's tired of his 360s dying and says he's gonna get a PS3. Next thing I know he walks into the apartment with a Slim in his hands. He borrowed our other roommates UC2 and has being playing it nonstop. I guess these 360 owners are finally coming to their senses. On average it takes about 2 breakdowns before a Xbot realizes which system is superior. Well, I will say at the very least that their dedication is admirable.

On a more related note, GOW3 FTW!

I've said it once and I'll say again, some people have the intelligence of a pea.

I feel sorry for them, but what can we do?

defently going to be the best selling game for ps3. guaranteed at least 2 or 3 mil in one week maybe more, as long as Sony starts marketing it it this week like a fat kid on a cupcake. i mean commercial it like crazy put ads on websites or paying Wal-mart, Kmart, best buy etc to put it in their mail ads, etc.this is Sony biggest game this year besides GT 5 and other games unannounced this year

I really don't see GOWIII become the best selling exclusive.
And I'm also disappointed at the review score GOWIII got, sure it's high but UC2 and ME2 are near-perfect.
I expected the score to be UC2-like but I guess this will do.

Erm, it's the same score as UC2.

I'm talking about multiple reviews, right now UC2 averaged higher than GOWIII.

I'm not saying the score isn't high enough for GOWIII, but for something this epic and amazing, shouldn't it get the same average score as UC2?

Snaaaake, think about this: most gaming sites are jokes nowadays, mostly 360-fanboy sites. 360 fans did not think that the Uncharted franchise was a big franchise, i.e. it wouldn't do much in bringing glory to the PS3, and the reviewers of aforementioned sites therefore judged it fairly. GoW franchise is famous, and it is a HUGE franchise. Don't you think the fansites would purposely try to down-hype and sabotage GoW3? I mean look at the complaints about the game in these sites. "Uneven story"? "Samey gameplay"? Nothing more than crap.

You can't hit a game website without seeing Kratos period, its M rating isn't going to stop anyone from buying it and those funny sales numbers show four MILLION less in sales cause GT1 was a better game then GT4 sad but true most people bought that game and cried at the money they lost. I hope GT5 is a return to greatness for the series (i stil play GT1,2,3) but graphics don't make great games

i don't really care which one will be the best selling one because i'm buying both if it goes down to GT5 and GOW3.

I'm just glad the ps3 and it's games are finally starting to get the recognition it deserves. I had discussion after discussion with all my friends before it and 360 came out, tried to the best of my ability to convince them.

Sadly I stood alone . . . . Oh well at least I stood alone on the right side. =D

Ps3 for the win!

Amen brother, luckily some of them have since then come around, but even they still insist on buying shooter after shooter.

Ugh, where do I find these people?

If we are going to turn this into a debate on racing vs action I don't understand it. Aren't there more action fans than racing fans? Yet the numbers do tell the tale of the tape. Either way GOWIII and GT5 are going to come with a massive attack as system sellers. And well, whatever that thing is Ben has hidden up his sleeve apparently.

Well I certainly hope the sales are through the roof. GoW is a fantastic franchise that should not be missed by anyone. Can't go wrong with any of Sony's exclusives, but this one is a must play. Can't wait to see what happens to the sales numbers.

I'm excited about GOW3 I'm not too into racing games at all, but I will always be partial to Uncharted 2. This might not be a popular sentiment but UC2 just rang so well with me from single player to multiplayer it was an overall gaming experience I will cherish. In other words I wish it sold a trillion copies.

I don't know. Perhaps at its launch it might get that title, but it most likely will lose it come time GT5 is released.

hello …

it's nearly impossible for an exclusive to beat a multiplat game, unless if it is on WII 😉 …

GOW 3 & GT5 will sell well, yet i hope that they do move the console sales, then even UC2 & others will see their sale rise…

I know for sure where at least 2 God of War 3 & GT5 are going (yeah, me & one of my friends are already on it LOL) …

cheers!

cheers!

i played the GOW3 demo yesterday…
am i the only one that doesn't care for this game? there was a lot of epic action (truly)…
but as any button masher i got bored rather quickly.
and to say that it has the same score as UC2 is strange to me cause i find UC2 so much deeper in many aspects…

It's more about the visuals for the game. All the blood and ripping things apart. Plus that demo only encompasses a very small part of the game that has been edited to remove spoilers. I think the real game will have much more depth.

I thought the same thing, that is… *before* I actually sat down and played it from the beginning of GoW1.
I was still luke-warm on it, until about maybe 3 hours in… Then, it just CLICKED!

The GoW games just plain rock! Their production value, attention to detail, and amazing graphics just captures you.

I'm also a huge fan on UC2, and I normally hate button mashers, too. I was never into the DMC or Bayonetta… which are similar games to GoW.

But GoW is something special. You need to judge it on more than just a demo. Borrow or rent a copy of the GoW Collection, and play either one for a few hours. I think you might enjoy them! =)

I still think Katamari Forever should have outsold Modern Warfare 2. It had all the right stuff. If that can't beat a multi plat than Gran Turismo sure can't.

I felt the same way about Uncharted 1. I played the demo, but it didn't click for me, so I passed on it. Then Uncharted 2 started getting all kinds of recognition. My roommate brough home Uncharted 1 in anticipation of the sequel, and I played through it and was hooked.

I understand that not every game is for every player (I'm personally not very excited for GT5. I prefer arcade racers to sims.), but I'd agree that GOW3 is still worth a rental even if you didn't like the demo.

Three things GoW III has going for it: 1.) It looks incredible; 2.) The story is very engaging and though Kratos is a savage, he is still a very likable character; 3.) It's not a FPS/TPS!

Playstation 3 has some great exclusives and most of them are not shooters. I mean Demon's Souls; God of War III; Heavy Rain; Infamous and Valkyria Chronicles are some of the best games I've played this console generation (Minus GoW III since I haven't played it yet, but I'm sure it will live up to my lofty expectations) Could you imagine if we only had Wii and 360 to choose from? I don't want too…

One thing missing here, is that Sony really needed to ramp up it's PS3 production before GOW3 is out, just so it could be a system seller in it's own right.

I mean, all the 35+ stores(& 3 malls) that carry it in my area alone, are all out of 120 & 250 consoles just as soon as they're in stock,
And it's been that way for at least a couple months now.

Just think how higher PS3's sales figures would be skyrocketing too,if only every single store had a much higher stockpile in
which to sell from.

@kraygen.. With you on that I have tried for ever to well inform my friends how amazing the PS3 is and still nothing they are living in their fantasy land of 360 still till this day thinking they are getting GOW III later this year or early next year… I think they live in LALA Land.

Honestly for "bestselling" exclusive I can see it being real close with GT5 and GOW III but if GT 5 keeps getting pushed more and more they could loose a little bit, since GOW has not been pushed back, developers have been on target with this game since announcing it but time will tell we really can't predict who will be the Bestselling exlusive till both are on those pretty shelves.

Just finished GOW3 not very impressed at all, the game itself was great but when i got to the end i was expecting the next part to load and the credits started to roll. I'm not impressed with the replay value either or how easy the trophies are to get I think I have 5 or 6 to go after one play through. After all the debate and hype I wanted an epic iconic finish to the series and it didn't happen, now i'm just wondering why it got a 9.8 here?
