New Call Of Duty To Embrace Action/Adventure Model

Hot on the heels of the Activision/Infinity Ward blow-up , we have a new Call of Duty announcement.

According to IGN , Activision has tapped Sledgehammer Games, a newly formed studio with ex-Visceral Games execs Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey at the helm, to develop this new installment. Perhaps the most surprising – and intriguing – part about this is that the new CoD "will extend the franchise into the action/adventure genre." What ? Really? No FPS? Well, we can't be entirely sure and we also need some clarification on the issue, because supposedly, there's a CoD title slated for 2011, too. Are we talking about the same game or two separate games? Might Sledgehammer develop this one and Infinity Ward continue with the FPS model with the 2011 entry? Oh, but it gets better; a third title gets added to the mix, because we can't forget about the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty that will launch later this year. Activision says they want to expand the franchise in question "with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business." So of course, that includes toying with the idea of "high-margin digital online content" and bringing the acclaimed series to "new geographies and new genres."

Yes, well…new genres. Didn't expect to see that one coming. Is anyone else suddenly more interested in Sledgehammer's project than either Treyarch's 2010 game or the "other" one that might drop in 2011?

You guys think this is bad wait till they announce their greatest achievement yet,

Guitar Hero:COD
Roadie's have gone wild and you must shoot them with your guitar before playing your music for the fans. Rock out to new hits like, "My guitar makes me kill" and "Giant speakers make great cover"

Lol activision would probly do it if they thought it would make them 5 bucks.

If this future game manages to not do well, this could put a stain on the Call of Duty name.

Cuz for the past several years, COD has, and still is, recognized as an FPS series/franchise.

It's like making MGS4 an RTS O.o

Well…IMO it can't hurt to see what they're doing. As much as I hate Activision, I can't honestly say I don't like their games (Well their COD games). It's funny because some people complain about MW2 being a MW1 rehash, which is kinda true, just with new maps, slightly improved graphics, new guns, and well a lot of other new multiplayer additions and improvements mostly attributed to the online half. Honestly, there are enough additions to say it is its own game although very similar to its predecessor. But look what happens when a game deters from its former past like FF13. After all the major changes to the series, some people find it unrecognizable. Maybe it's better if a series changes little by little as opposed to taking a leap of faith with a continued title?

Honestly, I would be happy if COD took the fight somewhere else. Instead of Modern Warfare, try Future Warfare, or Outer Space Warfare. That way the games would be that much more unique and differentiable from previous games of the series. I would be content with something like this happening.

You mean like Halo or something?
BTW this must suck for xbots, PS3 still has Killzone *evil laughs*, on second thought xbots would play "Call of Hero" or "Guitar of Duty" or whatever Craptivision (Credits to Jawknee)would call it.

Say what now? So now another horse to beat to death, smart. Well as long as people buy the games, nothing will change at Activision. But hey time will tell and Karma is a bit@h. Ah Kotick, you make so many people happy.

so they're tired of hearing that naughty dog's uncharted 2 is a lot better than Modern warfare 2 that they decided to enter uncharted's game genre to get beat down there by uncharted 3. You know, to take the heat of they new COD game.

The funny thing is, this "action/adventure CoD" will get better reviews than Uncharted 2 did because of all the CoD fanboys out there.

Nice to see that they're at least trying something new though. I don't think they'll succeed at it, but still.

I for one, already foresaw this kind of upcoming sh*t from AntiChristVision yesterday when I posted this in the AV Vs IW snafu thread last night, and that kotex also said he plans to make COD a monthly pay subscription based game too….

Kotex had planned his hostile takeover(of sorts) against way back before November 2009, and our own PSXE has indirect proof of it.
FYI, if you remember reading them, we already had the articles right here a while back.

I could see the writing on the wall just by little bits & pieces in those articles….

That IW didn't want to do another COD, & wanted to go forward on a new IP.

And add in that Anti-vision was hiring a brand new 3rd developer for the COD series……

Also, there was even this NY Times article with little subtle writing's on the wall….

As Activision seems to be discovering this year with Guitar Hero, there's danger when a title is overexposed with too many iterations. Nonetheless, the publisher has aggressive expansion plans for Call of Duty. Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions.

One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. The genre, in which Activision's Blizzard Entertainment subsidiary is a leader, requires huge upfront investments but can be very profitable as players pay a monthly subscription fee.

And add these article taken from the PSXE archives……

11/18/2009 https://temp.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/6156.html

BTW, the third developer taking over is "Sledgehammer Games) (headed by former Visceral developers Glen Schofield & Mike Condrey). They'll release a brand-new COD game "in the action-adventure genre" sometime in 2011, but it's not supposed to be single player this time & kotex is going to take the COD series into paid subscription based games.

More info here: http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/tag/7820/Fall-of-Duty.html

So now, IMO opinion, kotex has shown his hand & this is the first part of many in the fallout from a power-hungry madman….so far.

well when they screw up COD then i guess its time for a new insanely popular online shooter.

BTW anyone hear anything else on the multi-platform bungie game? im hoping its a shooter but i seriously doubt it.

"I think they should revise the enitire COD franchise. When I'm playing MW2, there is ALWAYS someone who "snipes" me with an M4 – reddot sight. I mean, why snipe when you can just pull out the railgun (M4), go camp, and pick people off." – Zamato Elite

i agree, but why not take that one step further? 3rd person version? Where you could change costumes and actually see your weapons, emblems, outifts? Then have it be more interactive, with interactive backgrounds …
