Split/Second Secures May Launch

Need an intense racing game that's kinda like Burnout only with more in the way of explosions and insane near-misses?

Then you might be interested in Split/Second , the high-octane racing title that, according to GameSpot , is now cleared to launch on May 18 in the US and three days later in Europe. The developers describe this experience as "racing through an adventure game;" you're actually participating in a fictional TV racing show where anybody who isn't completely insane stands no chance of winning. You'll have to drift and draft your way through a continuous onslaught of deadly obstacles and thankfully, you'll have the option of a power meter. Once full, you can unleash certain explosives placed around the track, hopefully derailing some of your opponents in the process. Basically, you want to blow stuff up in order to drop a bunch of junk in the path of other racers, which sounds like a massively cool idea. Black Rock Studios is behind the wheel for this one; their most recent project was Pure , an excellent off-road racer featuring ATVs. But this time, they're going with super fast sports cars, immensely destructible environments and enough adrenaline to fill an ocean liner.  Like, seriously.

So if this sounds like it's up your alley, you'll want to give it a shot come May. There may be other titles higher on your priority list right now, but aren't most of them coming out before May? You'll need something to play.

I'll be spending that month catching up on beating the games that I haven't yet because March and probably April will be full.

Pure was freakin' fantastic. I'll keep my eye on this, but it definitely doesn't fall into the day one category.

Since few are posting here I'll take this opportunity to say that the "women of Red Dead Redemption" vid did not show what I was hoping to see: 19th century hookers and burlesque.

However I see the ladies have found a way to achieve even more bounce in the PSP DOA bubbles video.

Yeah that title was a bit misleading eh? Although, I got to admit when I watched it, I liked how they made the women look like real women of the wild west would have looked. They weren't all porcelain dolls, I even saw a woman in there with (gasp!) body fat! I've only seen a couple trailers for this game, but I like how they seem to be going with making the west as gritty and realistic as they can.

In reality there weren't really a lot of "pretty" women in the old west because they weren't tough enough to survive the harsh conditions. Sure there were a few that made it but a lot that couldn't hack it. It's interesting how these guys aren't relying too much on the sex sells option for this game.

I kind of respect that.

how does pure stack up against motor storm 1/2?

I can't compare them. Pure was just great for the customization, tricks, etc. MotorStorm 1 and 2 are just plain bad ass. Pure is pretty damn cheap nowadays so definitely worth the spin. If you're into racing on an ATV and narrowly beating opponents, it may be up your alley.

I hope this game turns out well. Pure was great so I'm excited about this one. Could be great for multiplayer, as well.

I already got Motorstorm Pacific Rift to finish, and GT5 is on the horizon. Plus, I hardly put a dent in Burnout Paradise, that's a monster sized game with all the DLC too.

If Split Second can fix it's lag and framerate issues, and is less than $70 Australian, I might give it a look.

But GT5 and Modnation Racers is much higher on my racing list. (Not that such a gaming list exists anyway)

Oh yeah definetly interested in both of those. I like and own GT4 (I haven't tried the demo of GT5 yet since it's a ways off to release, though I have read about/looked at screenshots and probably should/will soon), however I'm especially interested in ModNation Racers. I like the idea of a family friendly battle kart customization racer in the vein of LittleBigPlanet. I just introduced my niece and nephew to by means of the demo, and which they adore, therefor this game may be of interest to them also. It's nice to be able to play some PS3 games with them. Hopefully like LBP it will just get more massive in content and creativity (from devs and users alike).

SWEET!
its about bloody time some developers started making car combat games.
now i have sega and sonic all star racing, BLUR,mod nation racers and this to look forward to.
mod nation is my favorite though, probably because its the only one ive actually played but even judging by vids it looks like the most fun.
who said you need a wii to enjoy cart racing games?

Yeah, although I haven't tried any part of the gameplay, I too am currently looking forward to ModNation Racers in terms of racing/combat in the forseeable future. Mostly for the reasons listed above, but also because it looks quite fun.

The Sega & Sonic All-Star Racing does actually look fun and ok graphically. I think I may try the demo soon. Currently the only kart racing/batlle combo I have is Crash Nitro Kart (PS2).

yea mod nation racers is really good i really love the beta, only wish they opened up one map for SP.
besides GOW3, crysis 2, mafia 2 and RAGE, mod nation racers is my most anticipated title for this year.
crash team racing was the last crash game ND worked on, and coincidentally the best game they ever made!
what i would do for a HD remake with trophies for that.

To be honest, from what I have seen of this game I am not very interested in it. I would prefer to buy GoWIII and Red Dead Redemption. There are a couple of other games I still need to purchase like MGS4, but I will use Glyde for that 🙂

I love racing games, which is why I'm completely uninterested in this game lol. Sounds like driving the car is an almost inconsequential aspect of the gameplay.

I was fairly impressed with the trailer. I just hope it has a decent length single player and isn't only about the multiplayer.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about this game. If it turns into another Full Auto, forget it. But I'm also kind of enjoying the physics of Burnout too much to think of getting this one. I'll have to see what the review is on it first before I make up my mind I think.

I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for the following, but the battle car games never really did it for me. Even though I found Twisted Metal interesting (here it comes ;P) the game never managed to hold my interest for too long. I know everyone raves about it, but maybe it's just not my genre of gaming, I don't know.

Give me racing like GT5, give me arcade racing like Burnout, but if you want to add a gun? Give me SOCOM or a tank level in a FPS.

But I was wrong once back in 1989, I could be wrong about this too, we'll have to wait and see. 😀

Don't brush this one off, guys. I got a chance to play Split/Second at PAX'09, and it was the single most entertaining game I played during the entire expo. I kept coming back to the Disney booth over and over again to replay it. It was F. U. N.
