PlayStation Home Update, “Freemium” Model Maintained

You can consider this the annual PlayStation Home update from Director Jack Buser and as you can see , there's a whole lot to look forward to in 2010.

As of now, there are over 50 Home spaces and over 100 mini-games with which to occupy your time, and of course, that addition of the very first full MMO-type experience – Sodium One – has helped to bolster the immersion factor. Buser says more spaces, community events and items are coming our way and last week, they unveiled the new-look Mall. Now featuring shops like Loot from Sony Pictures, Lockwood (creators of Sodium One ), LucasArts, and EA Sports, you can shop till you drop. Perhaps most importantly, Buser adds that Home retains its "freemium" model, which means that all participants can access the games, their friends, and all other content free of charge. Right now, the Home team is "secretly hard at work" on a number of requests from Home members, and their efforts will be revealed at a later time; Buser says, "rest assured that we hear your requests loud and clear." This is one guy that definitely takes a hands-on approach to his executive position; he's typically around Home and the PlayStation forums (as are others who work with Home), so if you have any grievances or suggestions, never feel afraid to tell 'em.

If you compare the current Home to the Home of a year ago, you will see some seriously huge changes, and that's exactly what we want. The potential is almost limitless and it's good to see Sony paying close attention to its growth.

I must be a traveling nomad, cause I haven't been home in about a year.

But I'm guessing that once I can get a bigger hard drive, I might settle down & head back home.

i went back for the first time in a long time last week. ill say alot has changed but not enough to keep me their longer than 30 minutes or so. (and most of that was download and loading times) lol

@carlospicyweinr,

Yeah, when I was in Home early on, I hated all the separate installs, & then the load time every time I moved into another section.

Also there wasn't much to go to, or much to see, except for the multiple idiots chasing after & then mobbing avatars who they believed were female. The funny part about it was that close to 1/2 were fake females, made by guys punking on the other guys trying to make it with them.

Anyway, at 57, a hardcore biker, and mostly anti-social anyway, plus with no Harley's there, I didn't see a need for me there just hanging out, all by my lonesome.

Now, if GTA ever decides to add a "The Lost & the Damned" motorcycle club there, I'll definitely be heading back, just so I can take over their M.C.

OOPS, ya know what? I completely missed your offer.

Make it a beer & some Cheez-its & I'm there!
(but just as soon as I can scrounge up some extra bucks to upgrade my 60 Gigger into a 600 gigger & also get a 1Teragigger external HD for saves & back-ups).

I am on pretty often, to be with my girlfriend. She seems to love it, except for when guys get carried away, which is sort of expected. I like the downloadable spaces, like the Red Bull one (it's three of them), & I love hanging with my friends in the Batcave lol.

@carlospicyweinr,
LOL, I watched the first 6 episodes of SOA, just to see if it would improve over time, but the makers of the show haven't got a clue to the workings real MC world.

SOA is nothing more than a glorified soap opera for those who know nothing about MC's.

In fact there's never been a show or documentary that has gotten it completely right, even the History Channels series, Gangland's on MC's, are highly sensationalized by the producers, just to grab more viewing sheep.

The only show I ever watched that was closest to real MC's(about 80%), was a great Canadian 12 hour long, 2-season mini-series about the inside workings of fictitious rival MC's called "The Last Chapter".

BTW, if you want to check it out, the complete 2-season mini-series(just make sure you get the 4-disc set) is usually on Ebay , 1/2 price dot com, or Amazon

i will admit it has alot of soap_opera-ish moments but the core of it… the family and unity and brotherhood.. are what does it for me.. kinda like the sopranos did for me with the mob.

I can't get on Home any more, network error every time (not on my end) but I am running short on space so I will probably delete it. I'll go Home again when I get that new hard drive I've been putting off.

It's just hard to spend money on hardware when there is so much great software I need to buy. I still need a Dualshock as well, my sixaxis triangle button sticks.

Yhea, same for me… but to be honest I am targeting July 2010 for a small overhaul…

1] 640GB hard disk
2] New DualShock controller
3] Keypad for the controller
4] PS3 Eye

Q!

@carlospicyweinr,
LOL,
As President of one myself(don't ask), I understood all about club brotherhood.
In fact, your club always comes 1st before all else, even family.
As for club biz, that's just it, it's the club's biz & nobody's else's.

And that's usually why you read about some stupid sheep getting their a$$es stomped, it was usually because they either tried to keep poking their nose into our biz, or they acted the fool around a club, or tried to play Mr. Macho.

BTW, you hit the nail right on the head with your Soprano's mention, in fact one of the guys who made the SOA series even said it was gonna be a "Soprano's on 2 wheels".

If you liked SOA, see if you can find a copy of "The Last Chapter", 12-hour mini-series, so do yourself a favor & get it.(make sure it's the complete 4-discs so you're getting the full 2-season series, not just the 1st one).

I promise, you won't regret it

I was getting worried for a while with Home but it's actually building up nicely. I love all the mini games they have now. It's a great time killer when you're waiting for that special someone in your life to get ready, 30-45 minutes of pure mindless fun.

The only thing i hate about home is constantly downloading spaces,you leave for a week and its back to downloading the same spaces again.

Can you launch any game in home? or is it still limited to a select few?

Until they have an MMORPG on there I'm not biting. Home for me is a waste of time and space.

hello…

i'm quite often on HOME, i really like the changes i've seen on it.

i don't chat with anyone, i once in a while make new friends but i'm mostly a lone ranger on it.

Sodium One is cool, i don't really feel the aspect MMO of it, not a lot of interaction but the Shooter is quite nice & it's a real small price to pay.

Been getting a lot of freebies & playing the minigames, would be happy to see some old games coming back though home.

continue the good work & thank you!

cheers!

I don't go there as much as I used to, and have only been there once in two months, and that was to buy a lightsaber for my character (yeah, I know).

Personally, I would love to see Home become the user interface once you power your PS3 on. A type of virtual XMB.

It makes perfect sense that access to the areas of home remains free, they must make an absolute fortune on the clothing.

Let's say at the extreme, it takes one developer a full 5 day week to create a single piece of clothing or personal space ornament. That's a cost of £700. Even the cheaper clothes sell for 79p which means only 886 of that item need to be sold to break even. Everything else is profit. Add to that the fact that many of the clothes are simply recoloured versions of existing items and you have a whopping in game cash cow right there even if only a tiny fraction of the community make any purchases.

Now, I'm not arguing against the business model but I am pointing out that Sony will already be making a whole lot of profit out of home as it is, without needing to even think about charging to access the spaces.
