God Of War III Eats Up 35GB Of A Blu-Ray Disc

Size and space is always a big deal for video game developers, which is why many first-party studios for Sony are thankful to have the Blu-Ray disc on their side.

According to a recent Tweet by SCEA Director of Technology Tim Moss, the upcoming God of War III uses a whopping 35GB of space on a Blu-Ray disc. Following the remark, he says, "thank heavens for Dual Layer Blu-Rays," which isn't surprising in the slightest. If A developer utilizes both sides of a Blu-Ray disc, they can jam up to 50GB of data on there, although according to The Lost Gamer , new techniques may allow a developer to put 33.4GB of space on one side of a piece of BD software. Over the past few years, we've heard many developers talk about the benefits of the Blu-Ray disc over DVD, and for a game like this, any extra help for the designers has to be appreciated. The final product should be both beautiful and even revolutionary from a technical standpoint, and one has to assume that the Blu-Ray disc has played a significant role in the game's excellence. This, combined with the power of the PlayStation 3, should allow GoWIII to shine brightly.

We'll let you know if that demo will hit the PSN this week; if it does, you can bet you'll see some hands-on impressions. You'll get some of those for the Yakuza 3 demo in a day or two, by the way.

You should let me get that demo code because I sit in my cubical writing python code all day and if I don't get some kind of release from this torture I am going to start doing sock puppet shows depicting the tariffs and taxes placed on Indo-China by the British government of the 1800's in great detail. Even going into how "The Raj" entered the language in India due to the ruling practices of the British at said historical point in time.

And plus I enjoy looking at bunnies and blood. And I've never played any of the games.

At least GOW III did not go multiplat, would have been a totally different and easily worse, if it was restricted by a lesser machines capabilities.

" "thank heavens for Dual Layer Blu-Rays," which isn't surprising in the slightest. If A developer utilizes both sides of a Blu-Ray disc"….

…there's a misconception here about "Dual Layer" and "Dual Sided".

God of War 3 is Dual Layer, which is two 25 GB layers on one side of a disc.

Dual sided would mean there was a layer on each side of the disc.

DVD9 is dual layer, DVD18 is dual layer, dual sided. However DVD18 is rare, and generally not used because it's more difficult to handle dual sided w/o scratching.

A dual sided, dual layer Blu Ray Disc, could fit 100 GB on it, but I haven't seen anyone make these yet… and I hope I don't, I hate dual-sided discs.

MGS4 and GT5P started it, Killzone 2 continued it, Uncharted 2 and MAG have nearly completed it, and it seems GOW will finish it.

I have pretty much decided that I am a PS3 fanboy.

Not the annoying type mind you, but the type who will reward exclusive developers with my cash. PS3 exclusive is where the games I feel as a consumer deserve. No HDD missing or media storage problems there what-so-ever..

I was close to trying the 360 again, but after reading all the FF13 and Lost Planet news, I believe a 360 will never get the honor of sitting next to my Slim.

It's only year four in the PS3 lifetime, and the obvious advantages are really starting to come through.

I am positive that MS is afraid to see what 2011 looks like when it comes to PS3 vs 360 games.

since they rely almost exclusively on 3rd part studios, it doesn't look good for them.

There's nothing original about MS…..

(if you don't count the fact that being the first & only gaming console company to hinder the future of gaming).
