You might remember Black from last generation; it was a fairly intense, atmospheric shooter that created a healthy following of fans. Well, maybe we're looking at a follow-up.
According to CVG , Codemasters has confirmed that their new IP shooter comes from the same mind that brought us Criterion's Black . The Codemasters Guildford Studio has teamed up with Stuart Black to begin working on the game; Black was the senior designer for the 2005 title that received solid scores from critics. In addition to his help, they'll also receive the veteran assistance of Tom Gillo, former Game Director at Sony Computer Entertainment London Studio, and Andrew Wilson, Senior Producer at Blackrock. The total number of employees working on this ambitious new IP is over 80 and they'll be working with Codemasters' well-received EGO engine. Said Codemasters VP Gavin Cheshire:
"Codemasters' Guildford Studio is key to our overall development strategy and this year has opened further positions across its design, programming and art teams. With Stuart Black directing the vision for our new IP in production, deployment of EGO and key development figures heading up a highly skilled team, our Guildford facility offers great potential for development talent based in the South East who want to join a growing studio and work on original titles."
Well, it's just another game that now sits on our radar. We're going to have to search for more info on this currently unannounced title, which is bound to get a whole lot of attention once its unveiled.
I thought Black was great, so im rather excited to see what is essentially Black II.
I agree, Black was the only good thing that touched my Xbox. The guns were quite good so here's hoping the next game will give the guns their feature like the first one.
Oh man, this will be awesome news if this one's a sequel to Black!
Yeah I wish it was Black two but, they're calling it a new IP so I doubt its a seqeul. I only rented Black and never got around to buying it or even finishing the game. Its funny this story comes up now because I've been thinking about ebaying Black for the last couple months now.
There is a god!
I never played Black, am I missing out on something big?
Nothing big, but definitely a good game. I'd look for a used copy somewhere, its worth playing once or twice.
me too i feel like im missing out also
Interesting.
Say, Ben, what's that secret game you teased in 2009? Can you tell us any more yet?
I thought that the original Black was published by EA. I can't see EA giving up an IP to a competitor, unless they were paid a bunch of money.
Well, obviously CodeMasters can't call this Black II because Criterion, which is owned by EA, probably has the rights to the name and engine.
So unless they sell the name to CodeMasters look for this game to be called something else, but it will still be the SPIRITUAL successor to Black.
Stuart Black? He named the game after himself? At any rate, no thanks to any more multiplat FPS.
What?
After Killzone 2?
And Resistance 2 🙂
The next shooter I'm getting will be Killzone 3… it will be a great day!

Black was good no doubt. But Codemasters has failed this gen. horribly, Dirt 2 was good but other than that, ugh.
I as well as many others would like to see a sequal though. Hopefully this is it.
All codemasters racing games sucks. GRID was just awful, and Dirt was incredibly mediocre. I've not even bothered with Dirt2.
I dunno, to it seems the visuals for Dirt2 were remarkable; at times they looked photo realistic… it seems to have done well, so why the Dirt2 hati'n NoSmokes?

I dont dislike Dirt2, i just didnt bother playing it because of how shitty Grid and Dirt are. I might try it eventually, but i dont have a whole lot of faith in CodeMaster's racing games.

Please tell me im not the only one who went back and looked at the PS2 review for the first Black. Am I alone? haha
You're not alone (altho for some coincidence I looked over Black last week).
how could i forget BLACK?
its only the BEST shooter to ever grace consoles!
why, o why EA?
WHY DO YOU CONSTANTLY REFUSE TO LISTEN TO YOUR FANS!?
i really dont get it.
NFS hot pursuit came out and sold so well, its the most asked for sequel in NFS history!
NFS is in the sh*tter so how do they revive it?
by releasing a sim, something NO ONE! asked for.
same with black.
the game came out and met with raving reviews, sold well, and is said to be one of the best shooters of all time.
so they leave it at that?
WTF?
there turning down briefcases of money doing that, NFS hot pursuit 3 would sell through the roof!
and so would black 2.
Red Faction?
first 2 were really good, but RFG did not suit the series.
not saying it was a bad game, because it was a very good game but it certainly did not feel like a red faction game.
i hope they go back to the style of the first red faction, but sadly apparently red faction guerrilla 2 is due out mid next year so i guess that ideas down the can 🙁
I wouldn't call it the best shooter ever, but it is near the top. Very good IP. I can't believe that EA hasn't pursued making a sequel!
I thought this game went over like a pervert in the park on veterans day when it came out.

That's interesting… I have a forgotten twin!

The only Codemasters games I've played were Second Sight on the PS2 and Grid on the PS3. Both were very good, especially Second sight – I think I've played through that 2 or 3 times. Looking forward to this new shooter. Even though I'm not terribly interested in that genre, I think these guys may be able to do something interesting with it.
I never had the chance to play the first one, but one of these days I will pick up a copy.
BLACK was intense when I first played,Im glad to hear that they might be making another one,but lets see how well they do with a market saturated with FPS .
I was a little disappointed in Black. I was stoked with the whole "A bullet for everything" slogan. I thought that that would mean that nearly everything would be destructible, but maybe I just misunderstood that. Any case it was a solid shooter, kinda buggy, but solid.
