Ben-DutkaWay back in 2008, Red Eagle Entertainment announced they had attained the rights to make a series of games based on Robert Jordan's popular and critically acclaimed fantasy "Wheel of Time" series. Since then, we've heard almost nothing about the first project.
Well, Red Eagle has been working to bolster its creation staff. They first signed with EA Partners and Hollywood writer Chris Morgan to assist in the development process, and according to GameSpot , they've now turned to RPG veteran Obsidian Entertainment for further help. Obsidian will now work with the publisher in order to prepare these games for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Said Red Eagle COO Larry Mondragon:
"Although Red Eagle Games is both a game producer and publisher, as a new company, we quickly recognized that we could benefit from supplementing small in-house technical and creative teams with a proven third-party developer."
If you weren't aware, Obsidian is currently working on finishing up Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas ; the team was initially founded by Black Isle Studios members back in 2003. Black Isle is well known for giving us RPG classics like the first Fallout and Planescape: Torment , so having Obsidian staff on board to help with the Wheel of Time games can't be a bad thing. We just hope we'll hear some baseline info soon…
Seems kind of weird to think that we'll get a game based on the series before the series is even finished being written.
I'm trying to imagine how they will make this into a game. Going to be interesting, I hope they do it justice, if not there will be a lot of fans of the series who will be upset about it.
The more interesting point is how the final book will be written with the author dead.
Didn't they already write one without him? I think I've read up as far as book 11, but I'm kind of lost interest in the series after book 6. I may pick it up again once the series is finished but I don't have any interest in it right now.

I'm not familiar with either the "Wheel of Time" series, or of these upcoming games, so are these games supposed to be RPG's, or a different game genre entirely???
They'll definitely be RPGs.
The Wheel of Time series is purely fantasy; I really liked them a lot when I was reading that genre.

Ah, the start of "The Eye of the World," the first book. It really is a fantastic series.

I'd say Obsidian is going to be a huge help to Red Eagle. It doesn't seem likely to be released any time soon though.
yeah Red Eagle isn't proven for something this massive. Obsidian will be a major boon.

Not sure if I'll like it as an RPG, but now at least, I'm definitely major curious to go find, & read the books.
You know what I would like to see? A series of games based on Steven King's "The Dark Tower" series. That was one of my favourite collections and I think it would translate wonderfully into the game world.

sweet as long as it does not interfere with alpha protocol or fallout new vegas.
never thought the buggiest game in existance could also be one of my favorite but some how fallout 3 managed that.
alpha protocol is looking really interesting too, a spy game mixed with the level ranking of a RPG.
its about time spy games make a come back, we use to have heaps of them with james bond, mission impossible, hitman, syphon filter.
but now all those series are missing in action, well besides james bond with QoS but that sucked donkey balls!
@ Ben. Could i suggest that when you guys do decide to do upgrades to this site that you consider a book review area? It seems that alot of gamers are readers and you often seem to appear knowledgeable in the world of books.
I'd love to read more but just don't know what i should read.

Never heard of this series of books but might check em out on Amazon. Books to games definitely sounds more appealing than movies to games. I find more creativity in most books, maybe because with books more is left to our imagination and personal interpretation, movies give us someone else's vision and interpretation which isn't as engrossing. Think I'll be keeping an eye out for this 'Wheel of Time' series.
Nice idea but I think Ben is too busy to be reviewing books too (Though I'd love to have mine on there)
Haven't heard of some of these books but they sound like they're worth a read. I've been looking for my next other-worldly fix.
I work at a bookstore and when I recommend the "Wheel of Time" saga to people I usually describe it as "like 'The Lord of the Rings,' but on steroids." I love the series … it's long, it's complicated, and there are almost a thousand characters who have at least one line of dialogue; it takes a lot of time to read, and the middle part of the series seems really slow … but the payoff (like "The Gathering Storm") is totally worth it. I'd like to see how they adapt this for a game, though. The game has to be exceptional to live up to the readers' expectations.
