The NPD results have been good to the PlayStation 3 over the past few months and now, SCEA President and CEO, Jack Tretton, wishes to thank you for making 2009 a very progressive year for their flagship console.
In his "thank you" post over at the PlayStation Blog , Tretton cites the NPD's recent Top Global Markets report, where PlayStation "was the only company to see consumers in three territories (UK, US and Japan) spending 15% more on PS3 software in 2009 than they did in 2008." It's even more significant because this category overall experienced a 9% decline. He further reminds us of previously reported facts: the PS3 was the only console in the US to enjoy double-digit growth in previous quarter sales, December was a record-breaking month, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is closing in on 3 million copies sold worldwide. As we reported earlier , the sequel managed to top its predecessor in less than four months time, which is an impressive accomplishment. As for January statistics, the PS3 once again went on the rise, experiencing a 36% year-over-year sales increase and MAG has managed to break the half-million mark after being on the market for only a few weeks.
The PlayStation Network jumped big time in 2009 as well, and December marked a 155% increase in sales from December 2008. Tretton adds that over 40 million gamers are visiting the PSN for their extra content needs and he promises "an onslaught of new IP and blockbuster games just around the corner." Not surprisingly, he mentions Heavy Rain , God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII . Yeah, 2010 is shaping up to be another great year; just keep giving us the games and we'll all be happy. 🙂
No Thank you sir, for your fantastic next gen console and awesomely awesome games to go with it.
instead of them thanking us in a blog, i would rather have them thank me by making sure FFVSXIII remains exclusive along with getting rid of microsoft "timed exclusive" stuff.
I think your asking too much.
i dont care if its exclusive just as long as it runs great on both systems and that the game be made to the fullest, so it should fill 25GB and xbox should have to have 3 dual layered discs (makes me remember the playstation days with the 4 disc final fantasy
We should be acutually be thanking him for the great software and of course, hardware delivered.
your welcome! i am on my 9th ps3 (sold some traded some gave 1 to my brother and 1 to my son and had 1 have a bluray drive failure)! so youve had my money over and over again. not to mention the games and accessories. although at this point i believe i should have been offered a few shares of stock by now. lolol frequent buyer miles!!!!
"Frequent buyer miles" lol.man you crack me up 🙂

Sure was a great year, and yet every time I look at a site other than this one, some nut is saying LIVE is a much better service. C'mon cross game chat isn't important, and we got more software.
let me on that cross game chat and i'll show them how annoying that thing is.
I'll take those Sony exclusives over a cross-game chat with a bunch of racist, perverted, degenerate, socially inept, and moraly corrupt internet cowboys, anyday.
hang on, isnt cross game chat, the abaility to talk to your own friends while playing different games?? not talking to random ppl, thats just normal chat which the ps3 obvious already has, ( tho i do mute everyone while i play CODmw2, ppl just piss me off) but i would like to be able to chat to my mates while am playing heavy rain and their playing cod or fifa, i still want this feature.
Cavan is correct. Not sure how talking to friends is annoying but whatever…
I'll take cross game chat so I can talk to my friends.
But, with all these titles coming out, it's hard to complain about things Sony. Especially if you use common sense.
My bad. I'm sure Sony will get around to that sometime in the near future.
I haven't tried Cross Game chatting at all, I need to waste my money on a MS Product to do that, but I don't see how it would work with games that require you to chat while online. I can see playing ACII or some other game while not online and chatting with a buddy, but if I were playing SOCOM, (With the NEW and IMPROVED PSX SOCOM CLAN, hit the forums to Join today!) I wouldn't want to chat with other friends not playing the game, because Communication in an online game are essential to keeping you and your squad alive.
So yeah, it would be cool, but only for games that don't focus on the fact that you need to communicate while playing.
I always liked Jack. Coming out and thanking gamers. What a guy!
He needs to thank himself. Without that price drop they/we wouldn't be seeing this PS3 tidal wave we are currently being swept away in.
i wish they would stop pointing to the numbers and this willy waving BS.
only things i want to see coming out of sonys mouth is either games related or a price drop.
especially E3 i got bored sh*tless sitting there just begging would you just skip to the games already!
oh man a price drop is a fantastic idea! Sony should lose even more money. Hey maybe they can give us some PS3's and games for FREE!!!!
yeah they so need another price drop
</sarcasm>
Depends where you live, in the UK you can pick up a new 360 for £99 GBP thats $154 USD. PS3 on the other hand is around the £229 GBP price point that is $358 USD.
I know M$ then screw the consumer for things like HDD's and online sub's but other people don't, not until they have made the decision have gone for the cheaper 360 and are sadly stuck with it.
I am not saying I think the PS3 needs a price cut, I just wish Sony would highlight this fact more to help people make an informed decision.

crhist i did not say they need a price drop, they will eventually need one but not now.
and you say im short minded.
uh huh,
"only things i want to see coming out of sonys mouth is either games related or a PRICE DROP."
How now brown cow?
Surprise.
Another negative post by the no name poster..
Jack is my man. Right there. +1
I can see Jack having a blast with Heavy Rain, God of War III, etc. Cool guy
More ass kicking this year
Great job, Tretton.
Thanks, 35 million times!!!!
(for each PS3 sold)
Wouldnt it be nice if sony said thank you with presents instead of "nice cheap words"?(futurama fans know) lol
This year might top last years greatness, so thank you for making gaming on the PS3 sublime.
Get this guy a beer!
2010 is gonna be great!
I thank all of Sony and it's awesome community for making the best things we have today in the gaming world.
Shouldn't we also thank Ken Kutaragi–The father of PlayStation? Too bad he was forced to step down during the difficult time…
I will always remember Kutaragi-san
I hope he's behind ps4 too, that guy sees beyond the present
He lays out a structure in where the hardware will last way beyond its competition
I hope they bring him back for ps4
Kutaragi is a great engineer, but he was a bad spokesman and never should have been promoted out of his proper niche. He is still a consultant, I believe.
hello …
you're most welcomed Mr Tretton …
will say so again early 2011 LOL …
can't wait for this year's upcoming beasts.
cheers!
No thank you Sony for another wonderful year, looking forward to 2010 🙂
PS3 does not need a price drop BTW it's a perfect price for what you get.
2010.
It's the year I mainly purchase PS3 exclusives.
FPS – MAG
Action – GOW3
Adventure – Heavy Rain
Racing – GT5
Not much else I need, with the exception of Ace Combat back where it belongs..
Sure enough they had a great year and the gaming they have provide me has been nothing short of amazing. For that I'm thankful but…
If MS wasn't so much smarter then Sony, they could have had an even better year.
MS is going to offer a FFXIII bundle and always do that with the games that they feel can be a system seller.
Sony on the other hand, just sit with their thumb up their assess. Where is the Uncharted2 bundle? FFXIII bundle? Heavy Rain Bundle? Are you kidding me Sony? Don't you like to sell games and consoles?
I've been waiting for an excuse to get myself a slim, just bundle GT5 with it and I'm in. If they had a Uncharted Bundle, I would have done it.
They could have this battle over in no time but seems to lack the brain power to do it…
Maybe they want Microsoft to sprint while they jog? Tortoise and the Hare anyone? Slow and steady wins the race, only Sony isn't jogging anymore theyre picking up the pace and Microsoft might want to make some games too Halo 4, Fable 3, and Alan Wake will only get you so far. Fable 3 and Alan Wake do sound awesome as long as AW isnt a fps because they would just be confining what could be an excellent franchise.
He can thank us by not EVER charging or putting any type of premium pricing on anything online that has to do with Sony.
I do like Jack Tretton though, how can you not.
