We knew Sony would be preparing for true 3D gaming this year, but we weren't entirely sure when the whole project would come together.
The last report we heard stated that 3D-enabled Bravia HDTVs would be available this summer – well before the initially anticipated winter launch – but if that's going to happen, don't we need that firmware update to enable true 3D for our PS3s? Pocket-Lint interviewed the director for hardware marketing at SCEA, John Koller, and we first find that the update in question will indeed be ready alongside the 3D-enabled HDTVs; the update will actually go out within a few months. And if you're wondering where 3D ranks on Sony's priority list for 2010, here's one crystal clear comment from Koller:
"3D is a major part of our initiatives in 2010 and we’re currently developing 3D stereoscopic games to come in conjunction with the launch of Sony's 3D compatible BRAVIA LCD TV in summer 2010. The amazing thing about the PS3's technology is that all PS3 units that exist in homes and markets will be able to play 3D stereoscopic games as well as 3D BD movies through separate firmware upgrades – something that other platforms are unable to do. We'll be announcing actual game titles separately later, but we think that 3D stereoscopic gaming has a ton of potential, particularly in placing consumers within the actual experience. With 3D gaming and Motion Control technologies just around the corner, 2010 will show just how PlayStation is leading the innovation curve in the industry and that the PS3 truly does everything."
It seems we'll need to have some Kevin Butler commercials geared toward this new technology and perhaps a slight change to the campaign; how's about, "it really does do everything"? If you're wondering, we've already seen a 3D-enabled game; it was Avatar: The Game , which launched this past December. There should also be 3D patches coming for current games, and that may even include the likes of God of War III … It's a brave new world.
I`m just interested in the games to be released alongside Arc, & 3D.
Another great technology that the PS3 can add to it's arsenal… Though, I wonder how many people will see 3D gaming as a motivator when they go to make a purchase…
I personally won't make the leap for quite some time. I mean… I've been using my PC monitor to play HD games because it does 1080p. I'm aware that I won't get the full experience on such a small monitor, but I noticed a huge difference with Deadspace.
I'll have to just hear how awesome 3D gaming is from everyone else here at PSXE, since this is the only place I go for that kind of stuff 😛
Not just 3D games, but also 3D BluRay.
@HL
Have you read about HDMI 1.4 being released? They said that the Xbox has HDMI 1.2 which can't be updated to use 3D. The PS3 has HDMI 1.3 which is able to be updated to display 3D. Because of this HDMI 1.4, Xbox will probably release a next box some time soon. Which in turn will cause Sony to release the PS4.
Not sure what MS will do, the easiest option is simply to update their HDMI hardware without doing an entire console refresh. I can't see them releasing an entirely new console for this, perhaps an updated 360 that features HMDI 1.4 to go along with Natal.
There have been some questions about running 3D in HD over HDMI 1.3 on the PS3, and I'm not sure how they'll do that since it supposedly needs HDMI 1.4. An early report I remember reading about this suggested that the HDMI 1.3 on the PS3 would only be capable of running 3D at a reduced resolution, so something more like 1080i or 540p perhaps?
But recently I read something from a Sony spokesbot that claimed that it would be capable of full HD resolution in 3D, so I don't know.
i can guarantee that neither companies will release a console for at least another 3 years.
if M$ were releasing a new console they would not be releasing natal for the 360, they would delay it and use it as a launch accessory.
also my tafe teacher who releases games on XBLA said there not going to release another one anytime soon because apparently none of the 360 games are hyper threaded.
in theory none of the games are using the full 8 theoretical cores and apparently halo reach is suppose to be the first.
so it seems pointless releasing a new console now, its too early there is still plenty milk M$ can squeeze out of it.
i think though the best thing for them to do would be a redesign and bundle it with natal.
sonys ps3 slim has shown how much of a turnaround a redesigned system can create.
I just bought a 42 inch 1080p 600Hz Panasonic Plasma hdtv yesterday so I won't be buying another tv for a loooong time.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

8Ball that better be a porn link.
Have you been watching Heroes john? Brave new world? i wouldn't miss the reference, i love heroes. so much so, i've been watching it ahead of the rest of the UK and watching it the day after it airs in america online. YATA!
as for the update, that is prtty sweet. imagine something like GT5 in 3D. that, would be simulation.
Wonder whether Media Molecule will push out a 3D update for LBP? That could be a bit on the awesome side.
It's cool, but since I get motion sick and headaches easily with those things I won't buy it until they have proven something against those things. btw, haven't seen avatar in 3d either, just regular 2D(why do they call it 2D isn't stuff like that called 3d already? Anime n stuff is 2D…can't recall movies being called 2D)
Still cool tha ps3 can just go to 3d with only a firmware update.
Interesting how through firmware updates we begin to get a real sense of the hidden depths that the PS3 has.
Highlander,
I am still waiting for that firmware update we talked about a couple of months ago, Remember?
The update that is going to enable the PS3 to send out an EMP blast that will brick all 360's.
LOL! Unnecessary, the 360s are capable of that without external influence.
3D is a nice add-on, but I don't think it should be the norm of entertainment. My personal opinion on 3D entertainment is that it is a step in the wrong direction. But I could be wrong, I do know that I won't be buying a 3D-TV since I just now afforded a Plasma.
I haven't tried a 3D Video Game as of yet, so I am slightly interested in how it will preform compared to something like a 3D movie.
hello …
i've seen a lot of people bashing this technology before even seeing it working (polished i mean here) …
let's see, if it's cool, we can decide .. i'll buy for sure if i don't get nausea LOL
i'm for it, so SONY better not deceive me on that.
cheers!
In my opinion, the only way for 3D to possibly succeed right now is to enable 3D on existing TVs. I don't know if this is technically possible, but I really don't think 3D will become very successful otherwise, at least for now and probably years to come. I don't know much about 3D technology, but to my limited knowledge, the current 3D technology we have mostly is just to create an illusion in pictures to fool your eyes thinking that it's 3D. That's why you need to wear glasses. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) If there is a way to somehow enable 3D on existing TVs by modifying the displayed pictures, or adding a device that can convert pictures into 3D, or something else, then 3D might be able to pull off. Why? Because this is probably the only way that people will absolutely don't mind wearing glasses for 3D. "Hey! 3D on the TV I already bought? I guess that's not too bad even if I have to wear those glasses." If it's not technically possible to enable 3D on existing TVs, then it's probably going to take 3D TV quite a while to pick up some momentum. Not until true 3D technology arrives that doesn't require glasses and at an affordable price. Meanwhile, people can still enjoy 3D in theaters.

Invite me to the party when you can pull off this 3D without the bifocals. I mean, some people already where glasses. That's just torture. Gaming is about enjoyment, relaxing, having fun, and getting lost in another world, how the he** am I gonna do that if I'm looking through two pairs of glasses, one which actually allows me to perceive reality, and the other to allow me to perceive an illusion, that just sounds ridiculous!
