Maybe nobody thought Assassin's Creed II could compete on a sales level with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , which launched at just about the same time in late 2009.
But Ubisoft has always been confident and their sales estimates for the stellar sequel have been very high. And those estimates are starting to look more accurate because during the publisher's fiscal year 09/10 Q3 conference call yesterday, we have learned that Assassin's Creed II managed to sell nearly 8 million copies before the turn of the new year. That's a gigantic number and well-deserved for one of the best titles of 2009, and we're now hearing that a third installment might actually be ready to go for the 2010 holiday season. It features the return of Ezio and Ubisoft has said it's a true-blue follow-up to ACII, so that's good news. Also, if you haven't jumped aboard the bandwagon just yet, you should know that the first piece of downloadable content – "Battle of Forli" – is now available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace. It opens up more of the game and adds a great deal of gameplay, so now would be a great time to nab ACII and push that large sales number even higher. A second piece of DLC will drop next month.
We just hope they're not rushing things by trying to put out the third entry in the new franchise so early. ACII was an definite gem and even downright memorable; let's not lose that just 'cuz you want to sell another 8 million ASAP.
That is a very big number. Amazing considering what it was up against.
No doubt more people will now immediately jump on this as proof that Uncharted 2 selling a paltry 2.5 million is somehow a slap in the face… ::sigh::
It's funny, cause someone I know never touched a PS3/Xbox controller in their life, saw Assassin's Creed and wanted to play. She got attract by the awesome graphics, gameplay, and storyline. I recommended Uncharted 2, but she hesitated to even give it a try or look.
your prediction came true within 11 comments.
@Jawknee
Indeed, and in the Uncharted 2 article's comments, Hexen tries to twist some words and numbers too…
There are times when I shake my head in disbelief.
Gotta correct myself. Hexen isn't twisting words or numbers. I think Hexen is playing Devil's advocate.

LOL! Either that or he's playing Halo….
@ TheHighlander – Best joke I've ever seen you write. I always enjoy a good lol when I come to this site.
it got my $60. wait no it didnt! amazon is amazing. But the game deserves those sales for sure.
I loved this game! This should show producers that if you make a good, single-player game that there is no need to shove an online mode down our throats! Games will still sell if you quit skimping on single player (I'm looking at you MW2, my most regrettable purchase of 2009), and developers and producers should look at this as proof!

My sentiments exactly. Stop skimping on SP to push the MP.
Glad to hear, the game was indeed excellent; it was also my first Platinum trophy game
whuuuaaat? no Uncharted 2? that one is easy too.
i only have 2 trophies left in U2. Demon's Souls detracted me a bit from Uncharted 2 and right now WKC has my full attention until Heavy Rain.
Got this one for christmas, loved every minute of it. I've downloaded the dlc but haven't played it yet. Have to crack into that soon though…lol
Having Assassin's Creed 3 one year right after the second game sounds fishy to me. Considering the fact that they admitted they cut out contents from the second game to make some extra cash on DLC. How do they manage to make a 3rd awesome game in less than 1 year? Did they cut out even more content from Assassin's Creed 2 to make a third game?

wouldn't surprise me if AC3 is just reworked content from AC2. im sure that happens a lot.
AC2 is one friggin' long game with TONS of things to do. You think they cut out half the game to sell it a year later? What kind of criminal organization would DO such a thing? Wada you thinking?
@Alianage,
LOL. I see Wada you did there.
Man that's a lot of money.
They need to fix the screen tearing problems for the next one if they do the game will be almost perfect:)

but they wont, this is Ubisoft were talking about. Every single game they make has screen tearing.
They do?
I was playing LEGO Indy and noticed that it had the option to toggle on/off V-sync (which, for those who don't know, eliminates screen-tearing). Why would anyone ever choose NOT to use V-sync?

does anyone know what the breakdown of sales figures across the different platforms? 8m is a lot. good job ubisoft!
Wow that is a big number.. Good to see that AC3 will go right off from AC2 with Ezio cuz at the end of AC2 I still wanted to just keep going and kill that damn scientist, Im all for AC3 this year they very well could of have been in the works of AC3 while doing AC2 so im sure it wont be a skimp' game. I already know exactly where AC3 continues from who ever played it should know too…
poofta
I just LOVE how the NUMBERS GAME IS PLAYED with Assasin's Creed 2 and how great a game it is and everyone is buying it because it is a great game, yet when it comes to Modern Warfare 2 some of YOU GUYS say it is not about the numbers and it was only bought because of the first game and blah blah blah.
How's that Uncharted 2 numbers thingy working out for yas?
:).
End of Line.
good god why are you still here?
MW2 is terrible…so is your comment. bravo.
uncharted is for gamers who like the finer things in life. you know like a great single player mode with a well told story. not a game just slapped together every year like the madden franchise just to rip people like you off. the blind leads the blind. sorry for us not settling for a 4 hour single player mode. you are the type of person that sane people no longer play mw2. we like to stay away from people like u

Please keep this sight clean. I do appreciate other peoples preferences and opinions, but lame "my game is better than yours" comments are to remain out.
its like mass zombies versus informed consumers. Example: for most people, chocolate is quite a good flavor for ice cream. But will it sell as well if all people knew that there were better flavors? This is MW has its advantage. It has the reputation (but I won't exactly call it a guarantee of quality)
I love this game! Rarely will I re-play a game, but this is one title I will replay esp. since I just got the DLC. I'm looking forward to ACIII…but a little skeptical…unless they've been working on this alot longer than we realize.
This game is pretty awesome, and deserves the sales. I'd like them to wait a bit longer for a 3rd installment though, I take a long time to get through video games these days. I just finished AC1 a few weeks back and started on AC2 last week. Only a few hours in and I'm really enjoying it. They've made some serious gameplay improvements over the first game.
Not to take away from it, but I did manage to glitch the game out within 10 min of playing it. Was hanging over a ledge and dropped down not realizing there was a flag pole sticking out of the wall immediately below me. Ezio landed straddling the pole but the game still thought he was falling… no matter what I did I couldn't get him off the damn pole. Had to quit and go back in. No biggie though, it was kinda funny actually.
This game was actually pretty fun. I finished it already.
But the DLC was a complete rip off.
MW2 is horrible, please. People that have no respect for this game are truly haters. Plain and simple. It's not exactly my idea of the perfect game but it's one of the best in its designated genre.
To get to the article though, 8 million copies sold, well that's amazing. Gotta say that AC2 was one second favorite play-through of 2009. Right behind Uncharted 2 of course.
These sale numbers will get higher when the PC version is released….
…unless everyone pirates it.
Everyone calm down, like I told Ben before even though the game is a follow up it most likely won't be AC3. The psp AC was also a follow up but it wasn't AC2. So everybody just please calm down and use your head for a minute.
And Ben stop scaring people, you should know better.

Hey everyone! Hitch here has already told Ben what's what. We can all stop lingering at the teats now kids, we've just been set straight.
All the stories I've seen on this refer to it as a sequel but not ACIII. Think of this as GTA: Vice City or San Andreas, which were not numbered sequels.
Hmm…i guess im in the minority that doesn't like this game. It just seems so repetitive. (i never played the first but to hear it was worse scares me!!).
I also hate the controls. Having the same button to reach out and grab as well as drop is just plain dumb imo.
Glad to see others like it though.
It's not dumb if you pay attention to the button context.

Worked well for me. That's why the game gives you infinite lives in case you make silly mistakes like that with the controls.
Genius IMHO.

i just picked up my copy at best buy (on sale) this week for $40. cant wait for some more time to get back into this game… brings back good old memories of the first one 🙂
NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i swear to god ubisoft if you destroy this series and turn it into another guitar hero i will personally take time off tafe, fly over to ubisoft Montreal and kick the living daylights out of everyone in the building.
i loved assassins creed 2 so much only infamous can compete with its quality, and fun factor.
may not of been perfect like the controls were a little fu**ed and unresponsive, and the camera was a pain in the a$$ but the story made me more than willingly forgive those scratches in a solid gold statue.
you really need to get the guide and read through the whole thing, it explains the story from the first one, explains what all those symbols above desmonds bed mean.
also explains the whole story in AC2, especially the glyphs.
you will need a new change of clothes after reading it, its amazing and mind blowing how much effort and thought has gone into just the story alone, its so complex and deep it could give quantum physics a run for its money.
thats why i love AC so much, the combat could be better, everything could be better but the story, the story is what transforms the game from a C- to one of the best games this generation.
just goes to show how important and how much a good story can change and benefit a game.
I'm starting to have buyers remorse in terms of getting the Prestige Edition of MW2. COD 4 Modern Warfare was a far superior game to its sequel, especially in terms of the single player campaign.
Assassin's Creed 2 more than deserves those sales numbers. More so than MW2 IMO. But watch Uncharted 2 creep up with increasing sales. It's like the tortoise vs. hare race…
"MW2 is off to an astonishing lead, lightning fast off the block, wow, look at that pace… but wait, Uncharted 2 is slowly making progress, closing the gap slowly but surely. And oh my goodness, MW2 has slowed to a complete halt just on the 3 year yard line, and here comes Uncharted 2, passing MW2's current position and steadily making it's way for the 8 year yard line!!! It's closing in on Mario and Solid Snake!!! Can it make it?!?!?!"
