Sony's "It Only Does Everything" PlayStation 3 campaign, combined with stellar exclusives and the all-important price drop, has resulted in a definite surge around the globe.
As reported by Industry Gamers , Research and Markets has released a new report that deals with "the growth trends of video consumer devices, including gaming consoles." According to the results, the PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe since June 2008 and furthermore, Sony's machine "is also steadily increasing its market share in all other regions across the globe, including in the North American market." And although the 360 still sells more in this region, PS3 sales have been rising quickly (up 44% over the holidays) and SCEA senior vice president of Marketing and the PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, insists that some day, the PS3 will reach and surpass the competition. As for all the console makers, the report says the Americas should remain the largest through at least the next few years. However, although the PS2 continues to sell in less established markets around the world, sales have certainly fallen off in the major markets like the US, UK and Japan. In other words, it seems clear that the transition between PS2 and PS3 is essentially complete in the most important regions.
It's good to see the PS3 continue its upward swing and provided the exclusives continue to resonate with critics and gamers alike, it seems inevitable that Dille's claim will come true at some point in the near future.
The thing is that although some people have problems the vast majority do not, so unlike A. N. Other console the sales numbers are not inflated to any significant degree by replacement purchases. That doesn't change your experience of course.
BTW, you could probably have got Sony to fix that 80GB system for about half the price of a new slim PS3.
As for your question about how many will still have their PS3 still going strong 10 years after getting it? A question and a guess. First of all, how many people have many CE devices that are still working like they were on purchase day, 10 years later? Especially complex devices like the PS3 which is more analogous to a PC. I have one PC that still works and is 10+ years old, but it's in a bit of a dilapidated state and only works because I'm geek enough to keep it running and it was a Compaq server class system to begin with. I'd guess that by the 10 year mark, at least 50% of the original launch systems will still be operational – assuming that their owners take care of them and clean the optical lens from time to time. I'd also guess that the mortality rate for 10 year old PS3s will be greater than that for 9 year old ones, or 8 year old ones, or 7, or 6, or 5, or… Like most CE products the older the device, the greater the chance of failure.

my fat ps3 died yesterday; and even though ive preordered a slim i have come into too many forum posts and videos suggesting the ps3 slim is very bad hardware; with fails out the box and countless snow ylod freeze and connection issues with the buttons on the system itself. these numbers are inflated (mostly ship to retail)to hide the fact that sony is either aware of the higher failure rate of the ps3 slim and this is a glide over for this quarter while a fix is created and then touted like these numbers; or a new revision with more robust system functions is revealed to be shipped uppon all the backorders everywhere.
if you dont have a slim or are not looking for one i doubt you would come across the numerous consumer reports about the failure of the ps3 slim.
Uh-huh. that'll be why I've read nothing about this anywhere else, right?
i did look and once again i find your post bullshit!!
and i notice you havent responded to any of the responces to you 1st bullshit post so that makes me think you are a xbot trying to get accross your false message!!
