Final Fantasy XII Sequel, Fortress, Briefly Resurfaces

Not long ago, Square-Enix said they wouldn't be adverse to outside studios working on a Final Fantasy title. This fell in line with the idea that GRIN was working on a supposed sequel to Final Fantasy XII .

If you hadn't heard, this Swedish studio (responsible for last year's ill-fated Bionic Commando ) was apparently working on a game called FORTRESS , which is supposed to be a follow-up to the PS2 RPG classic that wowed the world some time ago. However, GRIN was forced to close their doors towards the end of 2009, which is why most assumed FORTRESS went down with the ship. However, as reported by ScrawlFX , a new video has surfaced showing that the game is still in existence, evidently in the hands of another developer. However, don't bother trying to play the video there; if it worked, we would've posted it right here for you. Unfortunately, it says that due to a copyright issue, Square-Enix has yanked it…so no go. But we can tell you this FFXII sequel is more of an action-based game – perhaps not even an RPG – even though it still takes place in the Ivalice realm. The mere fact that such footage even found the light of day is intriguing enough for now…perhaps we'll hear more about FORTRESS soon.

In the meantime, you can ponder what FFXII-2 might've been like if S-E had decided to make the game themselves and keep it a true-blue RPG. I know a lot of you didn't like FFX-2 but that game was awesome so you can all go pound sand. 😉

They all had interesting depth and personality.

Vaan – struggling war-orphan with an inferiority complex chasing a dream, like so many RPG characters before him.

Penelo – the "everyman" character, nurturing, fiercly loyal to Vaan, whom she feels very protective towards, to the point of putting herself in harms way.

Balthier – father went insane, became a sky pirate to escape but was drawn back into the world he ran from via a combination of circumstance and his own true heart.

Fran – an outcast from her home and her people, yet pretends not to dwell on her past. Loves Balthier more than anything, and on this account has abandoned her former life.

Basch – old war veteran wrongly accused of murder and conspiracy, seeking revenge and vindication.

Ashe – The Princess, but far from helpless. Went underground and faked her own death when her kingdom came under siege. Fighting with everything she has to free her country and people.

So… what exactly is uninteresting about any of these character types?

The Balthei/Fran dynamic reminded me very much of the Cpt. Mal/Zoey dynamic in firefly/serenity. That unmutable and instantaneous full fight in response to a threat to the other, and a lazy, carefree attitude when the threat isn't really that bad. Fun stuff.

What's not to like about the characters? that their personal development takes about 15 minutes of the game and then it's never to be seen again… What are Penelo and Fran doing in this quest to save the world? well they're there to protect their man! what is Vaan doing there? "Well I have nothing better to do so let's go kill some monsters with these guys!", same with Balthier, at least up until the part when he knows Cid is behind a lot of the stuff going on, He didn't have a motivation to go on the quest. The story of the game is a Stars Wars ripoff at best, and most of the time I found myself backing Vayne's ideas instead of Ashe's… What is so wrong with letting mankind find It's course? and why is one massive invading country better than the other massive invading country? And speaking of which, why the hell can't you go to Rozarria? You can travel all around the world but can't go to Rozarria?

FFX-2 was a very good game, but only had an ok story. The whole dress sphere grid was pretty cool.

Anywho, I would love to play an FFXII-2, I really enjoyed XII. Well I hope that SE does have someone finish this game, I know I would give it a try regardless of it being a straight action game. Hopefully it would turn out better than Derge of Cerberus did.

Nothing wrong with FFX-2. The combat system was sick. All of the endings were underwhelming though

Edings?

It was one ending

(you just get to see them all if you get 88%, and a bonus at 100%)

X-2 had the best ATB yet, lots of action. I didn't mind giving Lablanc that massage either.

Although XII's story was very weak and limit breaks were a bit stupid (in my opinion) but fun to watch, I really enjoyed it overall. It is easily the best looking ps2 game up to date.

By the way, I thought it'd be cool to see a FFVIII spin off based on Squall's life as an undergrad student or going way back and remake the chapters when S. Adel ruled Estar. Perhaps doing missions appointed to Garden students before they become SeeDs, Triple Triad online, HD Graphics… Please excuse me, I just finished this game and haven't been able to get over it 😛

If there was an FF sequel i'd like to see it would be FFVIII, but FFVIII was pretty satisfactory, you dont want to open holes with spin offs.

Yeah, the game was really good at tying loose ends, a sequel could ruin that… I'd love a remake though, imagine Rinoa in full HD? The Laguna story was planned to be FF IX if I remember correctly but Square found that the public wasn't that interested in Laguna, as I am also… I still can't decide which remake I wan't more, VII's or VIII's…

huh, i remember just after GRIN closed they released some "concept art" that was suppose to be from a FFVII remake.
i had really high hopes for bionic commando and they really screwed it up.
loved bionic commando rearmed that games a classic especially since they added trophy support.
all they had to do was make a revision of that, how hard is that?
something so simple and they destroyed it, how can you take a half man half swinging gun slinging superhuman robot and make it boring?
never thought that would be possible, till i played bionic commando.
further proof that old games are always better than new ones.
you cant improve on perfection.

FFX-2, much like Twilight, was targeted for teenage girls. It makes me wonder how a grown man could like either LOL.

What the hell are you talking about. FFX2 had far more depth than most RPGS released during the PS2 era. Evidently you couldn't look past the pop music to see the adult themes and stellar gameplay.

Oh and congrats on having an asterisk next to your championship.

Indeed, saying that FFX-2 was made for teenage girls is like saying that brad pitt only makes movies for teenage girls. One would have to know absolutely nothing about him, but make assumptions on the surface based on their own prejudices and shortcomings.

Oh i really hope this is not true, I'm sorry Final Fantasy XII was the biggest disappointment in gaming history for me, i just couldn’t bear the thought of another 80 hours of blandness, If they do this, i won’t be buying it, simple as.

Yeah, same here… I really hated how the build up beginning was so good and had so much promise and then… well nothing… I honestly thought there were at least another 20+ hours left of the game's story when I went to the final battle… I kept thinking, "well It can't end yet, I haven't been to Rozarria yet.." and then you kill Vayne and the credits roll… What makes me laugh is that now people are criticizing FFXIII for being more like X than XII and calling it a step backwards… sheesh… when I heard that XIII was a lot like X was when I knew I had to get It… X was at least tied for the best RPG in the PS2, the console with more RPGs of all…

Oh, is that what the reviews have meant about XIII? That it's a lot like X?

I guess thinking about it, that seems more true now, it just wasn't clicking for me when I read those reviews.

Well that's fine then, X was awesome.

XII sucked (for a FF game, it's an ok normal game).

Why would anyone want to sequel XII? Hell, why would anyone want to play through XII a second time?

I liked FFX-2. FFXII was a different story. I played through all the sidequests, and by the time I was done, I completely forgot what the story was about so I just stopped playing. Sad.

Hope this sequel is a good one.

The only flaw in FFX-2 was that it was too short, in fact, TOO DAMN $%#@&#% SHORT compared to other FF.

You sure about that? I spent well over 100hrs on the game doing all the sidequests and the hard ass secret dungeon.

Not if you do everything! The length is comparable if you do more than just the main plot chapters.

There is a TON of optional story in X-2.

it was sorry. Whether it has good gameplay or not, it was designed to bring more females into the series, and congrats on your ability to insult someone who happens to disagree with you. Thought this board was civilized*

Disagreement can be civilized. Getting all pouty and emo about it is civilized too, in a junior high atmosphere, anyhow.

heres some school for you:

emo: someone who is depressed, sometimes wears black, and usually wants to die. None of which apply to myself, and from what I can tell, doesnt apply to Limited so, what the heck are you talking about? LOL

"…and congrats on your ability to insult someone who happens to disagree with you. Thought this board was civilized*"

It's the freakin internet. You telling me you weren't being all pouty and emotional about someone disagreeing with you on the internet? Limited might be harsh at times, but is mostly very civilized and enjoyable to read. Why don't you head on over to destructoid or any of the hundreds of fanboy sites that THRIVE on conflict, insults, and "Yo mama" comebacks. Then you might have a better perspective on what civilized public internet discussions are like. This is one of the best, if not THE best PS3/Console websites around sites.

Does that clear up your confusion?
