MAG hasn't received super high scores from the critics but Zipper Interactive isn't fazed.
The developer held a Massive Action Game event in London recently, which involved the Americans vs. Europeans. The first round went to the Europeans but the Americans struck back in the second round, resulting in a tie. And according to Games Thirst , MAG producer Scott Rudi told Jeuxvideo that his 256-player online extravaganza is the "greatest multiplayer shooter I know." Yeah, there might be a bit of bias involved but he goes on to back up his proud claim:
"It relies on three essential elements which are persistence, talent and leadership. We believe we have managed all aspects [of] the game and we hope you enjoy it. With our command system, we want to reward the most seasoned players. This is optional. It is imperative to become a commander, players who want to become but cannot because the others already perform this function, will have to wait for another party."
We admit there's some semblance of uniqueness to MAG (beyond the huge number of participants) but at this point, it may be tough to convince gamers of the game's superiority with reviews hovering in the mid-7s. At the same time, we have to remind everyone that a game like this needs time to develop; it needs time to find huge numbers of players, and let's not forget that updates and fixes usually come quickly during an MMO's first days. And yeah, this is indeed an "MMO," in every sense of the word.
Stay tuned for our MAG review…

If you pick Raven, you can pm me. My friends list is full but I can open a spot for you.
Is there a demo/open beta for this? my closed beta version stopped working after an update so I deleted it thinking I would just download the demo but cannot find one in the PSN Store.
Thanks for the help, Mr.Thumb
Sorry MAG, but a MMO such as yourself, doesn't have enough staying potential in the PS3 universe.
With the likes of U2, along with future releases of Killzone 3 and the next COD.
It is only a matter of time before your players start to dwindle.
Warhawk was similar.
I also got it is awesome i love the game a pure bad ass FPS that shouldn't be miss. MAG is just a blast and the best thing is that the game runs so smooth and looks great. The replay value is endless so will the DLC. My PSN ID: Ivan-
Warhawk has tons of people on always.
Endless DLC… oh goodie
Ambitious indeed but it seems that the double edged sword has struck.
But I wish MAG all the best though.
its not the best online game are u kidding me – this game just sucks a55 – lag – and crap graphics – get shot in the ass – spawn run for 5 min. then die again its so stupid. its waste of money zipper u should have stopped this madnes slong time ago ans remake socom 2!
Oh come on it may not be better than KZ2 and MW2 but it certainly isn't that bad.
maybe your should configure your own connection. i never had any lag or connection problems at all. about the run and die part, i guess you just suck at it. Heres a very useful tip, dont play this game like modern warfare, it seems to me thats what u been doing.
DO NOT judge this game by the BETA!!!!!
I played for several hours last night and it is an absolute blast. The game play is smooth, the graphics don't suck, and the action is intense.
I have never had the feeling while playing an online FPS that I was in an actual war. This game gives me that feeling. What makes it special is the communication. No longer do you have to hear 12 year olds cursing like sailors and talking trash. You hear people trying to accomplish the goal. Sabotage is a blast.
I didn't play the beta, but I have several friends who have and they said it is immensely better.
BTW, you will have the chance to "prestige" so to speak once you reach level 60 and can change factions. But, whatever faction you pick is the one you are with until then unless you want to start over.
another stupid thing is its like cod where u have to play alot to get the good weapons so g4y. special the snipers are crap u vs another sniper but he have the good sniper so u die as u have to shut him twice but he kill u in one shot – mag = lame end of story.
in the 256 battle yes full of f' lag!
Did you play last night? I had absolutely no lag whatsoever. The sniper thing is true unless you head shot them. A few times that happened to me, just makes me want to level up my sniper faster though. The one shot kill sniper is supposed to have a big recoil making it almost impossible to get your second shot off in time if you miss. I can't wait to try it.
johnld, you are right teamwork is natural. Every game I played the comm was very friendly and helpful. I played for 8 hours. Not once did I hear someone talking trash, simply because you can not hear the other team unless you are in close proximity of them on the battlefield.
How valid is a review for an solely online game when it's only been out for a day.
I believe Ben suggested socom at launch was 5 moving to around 8 after a period of settling in.
MAG's 7 at launch, is it a base indicator, and extrapolating, might it be possible that it could attain more of an 8-9 after bedding in?
Kudos to a game destined to fail. With all the young Modern Warfare fans who love the 'arcade' game play or think it's realistic to knife someone when running 20 mph while getting shot at this game is out at the wrong time. It needed to come out about 6 months ago; before COD and not right before BFBC2.
The innovation in a console game to allow for leaders that have to earn it and for the ongoing 'Shadow War' that will change the way the life of the game develops (supposedly) and the 256 people in the same room. Over the next year or so we will see games that take from this and improve on it.
@JPBooch add me D-G-90
sure thing bro…I'll be on later. try to send a pm to docbooch as a reminder if you are on.
Its really sad that I can't convince most of my friends, hell they won't even try it, they are too stuck on modern lag two. I became bored with that sixty dollar exspansion pack, about a month in I, but I still play because thats what all my boys play. But I think I'm just going to find new friends.
lol johnld when u reach lv 40 u can create new factions. no one will reach level 40 before the quit this B game
Maybe you didn't see that I replied to your above comment with a question, but I'll ask again. Did you play the retail version last night or are you basing your comments of the beta?
I haven't reached the level where I can participate in a 256 player battle so I can't comment on that. But, I haven't seen any lag in the other modes.
The shot in the a55 and run for 5 minutes is just not true. While it takes maybe 10 seconds on avg to respawn and maybe another 10 seconds to get back where you just got killed, I hardly think 20 to 30 seconds tops is 5 minutes. It makes you rethink just running in there and actually communicating to form a strategy.
sorry i didnt notice your comment – retail version and if u go mag offical forum you'll see im not the only one.
Ok, I went to the MAG official forum and I came across one person who posted a lame youtube video showing him playing suppression. Then 8 comments telling him he is an idiot. There was also one thread about a laggy domination game that was apparently rampant last night, but several posts saying they had no lag earlier today. You have to expect some problems on release day for a totally online game.
The only reasons I haven't bought this yet are:
a) not enough money 🙁
b) don't want another game to dominate my life
c) saving for GoWIII and all of the other fantastic games coming out soon
In my opinion, Zipper just chose to release this game at the wrong time, although I'm sure it wasn't their fault. It's hard to compete with Final Fantasy XIII and GoWIII, even if they are coming out later.
I'm loving every second of MAG.
It's pretty much my dream FPS.
The scale and size of the battles are amazing.
I don't understand why everyone hates it.
Big reason some heat is being thrown MAG's way is the fact it doesn't say —
"Call of Duty" Massive Action Game.
I enjoyed the Beta alot, and I am buying it next week, as well as a few other people I know..
People just like to hate on things, makes them feel better i guess. it's the American way don't you know. 😉
Played the beta, loved it. Still waiting for my pre-ordered copy from Amazon. Its the closest thing to what I imagine being on an actual battlefield is like that I've ever played. I'm grateful that Zipper has pushed the boundaries with this game instead of making another COD clone. Hooray for innovation, down with the haters.
