The PlayStation 3 is selling better than ever and it has now topped another plateau in the UK.
As reported by MCVUK , an SCE UK representative has confirmed that Sony's flagship console has passed the 3 million sold mark in the region. This comes hot on the heels of Sony announcing they sold 3.8 million systems around the world in the final weeks of 2009. Said the spokesperson:
"We are delighted to have passed the 3m milestone with PS3. With the incredibly strong line up that we have going forward – Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles and God of War III in the first quarter alone, then Gran Turismo 5, Modnation Racers, Motion control, and a few surprises for the new fiscal year, this is a great way to start the New Year."
Many have noticed the PS3's upward swing through 2009 and into 2010; the NPD has already described the console's recent performance as a "turning point" and analysts have predicted an increase in PS3 sales this year while Xbox 360 and Wii sales may stagnate. Sony's machine has been fairly popular in the UK since the launch and to pass the 3 million mark now is a good sign. Worldwide, overall PS3 sales figures seem to be approaching 30 million all told (depending on the source you use). Huge exclusives will continue to help, too.
I think it will reach 50 Million by the end of this year. GoW3 and GT5 will spark the sales.
Let's just hope that Gran Turismo 5 will actually hit this year lol. It's interesting how Polyphony changed their stance from "We can release it any time" to "We can always put more content on it." But I'll definitely take more content and a more epic game.
I don't think so Shadowrunner… that is unrealistic! No doubt by the end of 2010 the PS3 could be some where around the 42 to 45 million units sold, but to top 50 million would be something.

@ Shadow, You don't even have a PS3 shadow so you won't be taking anything. I think it's time for a PS3 purchase, maybe that new 250 gig limited's coming out soon.
@Roach721:
I have a PS3 slim, what I said before is that I don't have a PSP. I am just not into gaming on a small screen, and I prefer reading during my travels.
@ Qubex:
I hope it will top 5o mill this year. It will give developers more reasons to polish up multiplats, and it will reward all the exclusive developers out there 🙂
@ Shadowpal2:
I think they will get GT5 out this year's summer or before christmas.
3 million? that's less than half of what it has sold in the US…
And here I thought the US was behind everyone else…
Interesting
Anyway, they'll EVOLVE soon enough. The British love racing games.
Dont you mean its us americans who will evolve soon enough and stop buying…well, you know.

FYI – the UK population is about a fifth of the US population, so the number of PS3s per gamer in the UK is significantly higher than it is in the USA.
Look at an atlas, and see the difference in size between North America and the U.K
You must've failed geography. United Kingdom is pretty much just four countries with rather small populations (Englands, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland). The population of all four combined is 60M, and 90% of that is made up by England (52M).
The United States has just over 300M (legal) for reference. So 3M for one territory where a lot of people are poor, farmers, etc. is a lot.
Just way too many good releases coming this year to keep the PS3 down.
Like thee ole song goes….
"Ain't no stopping us now…we're in the groove"
I surely do like the sound of "and a few surprises for the new fiscal year"… reminds me of Ben's secret exclusive.
Nice. Even though I expected more to be sold in the UK..
The Euro > US dollar
What are the British thinking?
They'd be buying ps3 cheaper than us. Yet they hold back? weird
Um Scarecrow…*palmface*
We aren't talking about the Euro here. We are talking about GBP – the currency of the U.K.
And no the people in the U.K. can't buy a PS3 cheaper than U.S. citizens can. A PS3 costs £269.99 there. Which is equivalent to $438.76.
However I believe the GBP is > USD. I think like $1 can buy 0.60 GBP
Hopefully you can understand the rest from there.

Only 3 million out of 30 Million sold? I always that that the PS3 was doing better in Europe then here. Anyone have the breakdown of what the quantities are per region world wide? It would be interesting to see who has how many. My guess would be that Japan has a big percentage of them.

Keep in mind that it's only the U.K. Not Europe!
Europe is 10 million and over, which means that 1/3 of the PS3s sold in the world were in Europe.
Oh and as for your worldwide breakdown:
U.S: 9 mill+
Europe: 10 mill+
Japan: 4.39 mill
U.K: 3 mill
Canada: 520,000
Worldwide: 27 mill (as of September 31,2009) – there is definitely much more now.
So no Japan does not have the largest percentage of PS3s, Europe and the U.S. does – each sharing about 33% of the total PS3s sold.
HOWEVER! For the percentage of Japan's population that owns PS3s: 3.4%
That's quite a lot when it comes to other nations:
US: 2.9%
Europe: 1.4%
Canada: 1.5%
OH SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!
UK: 4.9%
So 5% of the U.K's population owns PS3s where as 3.4% of Japan's population owns PS3s!
But I'm sure many Japanese just go over to their friends house and have a PS3 party so really for 1 ps3 sold there…it would mean 15 people having fun. =)
nice break down of figures there shadow. true 5% of english people own a ps3. shame that sony don't recogonise this and shaft english users on the store and with releases that come late. on the plus side they are trying to do better but there is room for improvement!
Shadowrunner, I think now the PS3 should be around the 31 – 33 million mark, which is not bad. The 360 I suspect would be around 35 to 38 million mark all told… they are still about 5 -6 million ahead of the PS3 I think; but the margin is closing…

Thanks for the breakdown Shadow, I was pretty surprised with those numbers.
I'm also a little disappointed in how few Canadians have bought. Of the 520 thousand sold up north, I've contributed to 2 of them. Lol, I didn't think the number would be a huge one, but I expected that we would have at least broken a million.
A well, thanks for all that research for that breakdown. That's a nice little bit of info to tuck into the back of my mind.
@ Shadowpal
Why is UK listed in your worldwide breakdown? Surely that falls under the European Category?
@ englishgolfer, just to let you know, Scottish, Welsh and N.Irish dont like to be refered to as English when your talking about the UK as a whole.
see what happens when you charge a reasonable price for a product and release some decent games for it?
immagine whats going to happen when they announce twisted metal, socom and syphon filter 5.
O, and they better otherwise all hells going to break loose!
whats with sony and building up a popular franchise than killing it off like crash or spyro or syphon filter.
theres so many hit classics on the ps1 that sony have not brought to the next generation yet.
im all for new IPs but all in moderation, you cant have a million new IPs and no well known series.
I hate Sony to the max. Things like Bravia, VAIO and Sony Ericsson are ridiculously expensive.
The only thing I buy with a "Sony" on it are PS, PS2 and PS3.
overpriced they are but there actually really good.
ive had 6 sony ericsson before my iphone and had a nokia N76 and a motorolla V7 and my 6 sony ericssons broke less than the 1 motorolla and 1 nokia.
especially the nokia that was a NIGHTMARE!
every 2 weeks it was in the repair shop!
if they brought their prices down a little they would be making allot more money.
how their laptops are more expensive than toshibas ill never understand.
especially since toshiba laptops are the best, most reliable, best built machines out there.
thats the thing with sony, most companies produce a better product and charge a little extra.
sony does the same, but instead charging a little extra they tripple it than add on some garnish.
bravias are good, ive always thought there better than samsungs, only reason i prefer samsung now is because there supporting LED where sony wont be till their new TVs are out in a few months.
once those are out they should be pick of the crop again, but depending on the price if their 50 inch XBR is 10K like the last one was there going to sink like a stone!
@Snaaaake: You get what you pay for. There's no point in being a cheapo when it comes to electronics if you want the better stuff.
@Cowheard
An LCD using a white LED edge light without local dimming is not equal to an LCD using a tri-color LED back light with local dimming.
It always seems to be negative about Sony from you. Why?

Sony Vaio's are awesome computers, you do get what you pay for. Sony tv's are also great especially the XBR's. You can't put Sony Down just because you're broke Snaaaake.
yea the XBRs are great.
but 10 thousand dollars great?
seriously a 60 inch pioneer KURO i was quoted 3 weeks ago 7K.
3K less than the XBR and the pioneer KUROs are the best screen on the market to date, and have been for a long, long time.
not even the latest samsung 9 series stand up to them.
thats why im always complaining about sony, they are a complete utter rip off!
yea there products are better BUT not better to the price there asking.
and no the VIOs are not very good laptops.
my toshiba costs 400 bucks less than the equivalent sony vio.
same RAM size, same RAM speed, same size HDD, same RPM HDD, same size screen, same resolution, same GPU.
there is no difference between the 2 laptops so why is the VIO 400 bucks more?
and its a known fact toshibas are the best, well made, most reliable laptop on the market.
toshiba is to computers what Ferrari is to cars, or what boose is to speakers.
everything is exactly the same
3 years and 2 months ago when the PS3 was just launched, its super power is dangling there alone with the drought of the games, however, even by then, I had foreseen that one day, PS3 would shine and become the true ultimate machine and now this is the time.
with the games like GOW3, WKC, FF13, FFv13, The Last Guardian, Dante's Inferno, Lords of Shadow, Resonance of Fate, The Last Rebellion, Star Ocean 4 …. The machine will reach its true potential and rule.
I am more than delighted!

i want a next gen ape escape, that game was the shizz
Or a new Spyro, made by the original developers (they only did the three PS1 games).
Insomniac?
Yep.
@Feregrin, I would LOVE a spyro remake by insominac, They sold the rights to the series though. MY friends and I have been saying we would love a spyro remake for like 6 years, haha.
Now here's a question, what will Sony have in offer for us for 2010 and beyond?
Now that GOWIII and GT5 are 2010 release, is Sony going to make more new IP like Heavy Rain or they bring back some old franchise or they simply make more games from the same franchise?
Sony aren't the ones creating the games.

Wait what…the spokesperson mentioned White Knight Chronicles but not FFXIII? O_o
Can't edit or delete my post anymore, meh. He meant exclusives of course.
@ Scarecrow, think about it bud theres over 300 million people in the U. S, theres about 60 million in the U.K, not to mention how much cheaper u get it for.
While I'm writing these lines, more than 32.5 million PS3's have been sold worldwide, and Sony already shipped more than 35 million units.
Sony exceeded their own expectation at E3 last year.
what was their expectation?
I believe their expectations were to sell 10 million PS3s, worldwide, during Fiscal 2009, which ends in March.
14 million.
If the Americans would stop buying the 360 then the PS3 would be in the lead.
