Okay, Torne is what SCE hardware planner Kiyoto Shibuya calls an attempt at making a "truly PS3-like DVR." "We built this from the ground up to be a uniquely PlayStation product, and I think the results show that limiting your feature set can be a good thing," he said. (source- 1Up ) Yep, Torne is a video recording device for your PS3, and in addition to being fully compatible with the PSP (you can use your handheld as a remote control), it appears you can even earn Trophies by utilizing Torne. Said Shibuya:
"It's compatible with the PS3 trophy system, and you can get trophies for things like watching final episodes from a lot of TV series, for example."
Torne will be available next month in Japan for the price of 9980 yen, and consumers will also have the option of a model that comes complete with a 250GB hard drive for recording purposes. But that'll cost you 42,800 yen, so… Shibuya adds that this could be "a way to convince your wife to buy a PS3. If she says 'no game systems,' just tell her that it's for video recording. We'd all be very happy if it worked out that way." Ah, we like your thinking there, Kiyoto! Good show! We need more ways of tricking the ladies into becoming part of our industry. 😉
As for the US, we don't know when or if Torne will show up. But we'll be sure to let you know.
I just bought Playtv, which is not compatible with receiving HD signals here in the UK btw. Ben, do you know whether this will be HD compatible?

In this day in age, with all the advertising for HD products, it would almost have to be HD compatible wouldn't it? It would be a bit of a design flaw if it wasn't. Especially if it's built to work with a system that is all about HD Graphics.
Granted you're recording TV and not anything off the PS3 but still, I'd assume they would have built it to run with HD.

no it wont be mate, this is just Japans version of play tv, and thus will not be compatible in the uk

The UK uses the DVB-T2 standard for HD television and DVB-T for SD television. Other European countries and Australia are able to receive HDTV on playtv because they use DVB-T for both SDTV and HDTV.
I only had to show my wife ONCE that the PS3 can stream TV and Movies through our wireless network for her to agree that the PS3 was an amazing buy. I of course said "No, getting your OWN PS3 to watch TV and Movies would be an amazing buy."

My parents steal my ps3 around once a week for just that.
It sucks knowing that us Canadians will never get a chance at toying around with the cool gadgets. I'm thankful I can at least buy games and download trailers and demos and whatnot from the PS Store though.

All of those deals have to be done country-by-country (or region-by-region), which also means they have to set up different video services (and probably servers, etc.) for each as well. It's not like they can just put up a bunch of TV shows and movies for anyone to download, unfortunately…that's what streaming from your home computer is for! 😉
I brought this up in the last consumer survey i did. A Sony Canada rep actually called me last week to say they are reviewing it and that bringing the tv/movies features to Canada is something they are working on. So we can expect it in the future… but who knows when. I don't understand it. Our copyright laws are more lax up here and yet, we don't get the same services.

It's probably because Canada's copyright laws are so lax that movie and TV companies are reluctant to allow Sony to put movies and TV episodes on PSN.

I would get it, I still don't have a DVR, but not everything makes it onto OnDemand. I suppose it will take 10,000 years to get to the US.

I have a DVR from the cable company, and would gladly pay Sony so that I could drop the $15 a month charge for renting it from Comcast. This thing would pay itself off in well under a year. I have my fingers crossed already. Of course, with Boxee coming out, I have some research to do. I may be able to drop Comcast television all together.
I couldn't live without my DVR man. I only watch about 10% of TV "in real-time" (as Jack Bauer would say).
I would definitely be interested in a Sony DVR with my PS3.
I have a TiVo box that my boss gave to me about a year ago. I never signed up for the monthly service charge, but what's great is it works without having to pay it. I don't get all of the onscreen info, but it does record what I need it to.
I am a bit confused as how this works.I have Direct tv and their DVR for tv viewing.I would have to have netflix for this to work on my Ps3 right? if not i cant watch tv unless i buy video from the PSNstore if thats the case can i record what i bought and keep it forever,also what does 40,800 yen come out to be in dollars.It is cool though.

NetFlix has nothing to do with it. You plug your satellite/cable into the box and your PS3 becomes your DVR. Boot up your PS3 to see the shows you recorded.
From my understanding playtv and torne all work with terrestrial tv services, and are not compatible with satellite or cable services.

i was going to get it, but the non HD and 200 buck price tag put me off it.
i bought a HD digital set top box with a 250GB HDD built in for 250 bucks 3 years ago.
they would probably be under 150 by now.
how can you justify 200 bucks for a box that does not have a HDD, or does not support HD?

This might be a stupid question but I just have to ask it anyway… This PVR like thing for the PS3. Will it be able to "Record" while you play games say GT5? So that you can record your races and share it with friends and all that cause that would be pretty damn awesome.
But here is the catch. If it actually does just that would that make "pirating" of movies a lot easier as well? Say rent a movie watch it and press record…? Just curious…

Yes, the info (in Japanese) on torne.jp says it will work in the background…apparently the box does the encoding and just transfers it to the PS3's internal or USB HD, requiring little processing power from the PS3 itself.
This is so cool. I really wanted to record TV as soon as I got my PS3 but… sadly, PlayTV with just a Euro thing.

The two systems are not similar. The North American terrestrial digital tv standard is ATSC while it is ISDB-T in Japan.

i would love support to more zones, in MU we don't even have dedicated PSN accounts. I think SONY should start thinking global & make hardware & services that are global!
A video recorder for the PS3 isn't what i need most (already have PVR for SatTV & a VIVO Card on my old PC), but would be a cool gadget to add, mostly because i intend to biuld another PC & won't have VIVO or VideoCap options unless if captures HD.
a PlayTV for other zones … would be great if also could allow any video input on it like via Composite or HDMI.

n4g has an article about slingbox for ps3 compatibility, slingbox is networked tv like sopcast for linux.im not to familiar with it so im not sure if you have full control over the cable box, but there is also an hd version of slingbox thats about 250-300.

Unless one has actual CAT5 type wiring throughout their home streaming 720p/1080p content, at least in mkv wrappers, is junk. I argue you can't beat a USB passport drive or similiar ($80 or less for 500GB, no a/c power required), a wd media player ($90 or less, hdmi and optical output, plays mkv up to 1080 flawlessly, iso, mp4, FLAC and WAV (which PS3 does no lossless audio that I'm aware of), and a $25, all you can eat newsgroups subscription. All the programming you want from all over the world, commercial free and in HD.
