Real-Life GPS Functionality And 3D Set For Gran Turismo 5

Every time we think we know about all the cool features in Gran Turismo 5 , another one pops up and makes us go, "oh… damn .

In news taken from the Tokyo Auto Salon 2010, GTPlanet is reporting that Polyphony has teamed up with auto technology company Denso to deliver GPS functionality to the game. It's a "GPS-track day unit," which will be included in the new Toyota-FT86G; the unit will monitor your position as you take a spin around any real-world track (provided that track is in the game). Then, when you're done, you simply take the memory card out of your car, plug it into your PS3, and the data will then be used to reconstruct your lap within the game. Watch a replay of yourself, compete against your own ghost car…it's just so freakin' cool! It also seems as if this feature has already been tested; according to MotorTrend, the devs gave it a shot in a race-spec Lexus IS-F at Nurburgring last October. And last but not least, it was confirmed that a "3D version" of GT5 will be on store shelves "as soon as 3D TVs become available on the market."

Sony has already said they'll have their 3D Bravia HDTVs available by this summer but that quote implies there will be two versions of GT5 (a non-3D one and a 3D-enabled one), which seems a little odd. Last year's Avatar game was 3D-enabled but you could certainly play it normally…a little confused there, but still, all of this just ratcheted GT5's "awesome level" up a few notches.

It's tidbits like this that keep me excited for GT5.

How many more features are still unmentioned?

My guess is, alot.

Yeah, I believe there is a ton more to come as well.

Quote of Kaz from E3 trailer, "..very small portion"

Quote of Kaz from GT5 demo success in Europe, "…only a tiny sample of what's to come"

Quote of Kaz from Motortrend interview, "The game as a whole is completely new. But online functionality has to be at the top. We've worked so hard on it and we're hoping it's a hit."

Quote about Tuning from Motortrend interview, "They will be able to tune cars. It's another detail I can't disclose." similar quote about league functionality as well.

There more quotes, but overall, from the looks of it, there is still much we don't know I think.

Wow that is pretty cool. But you need a different GT5 if you want to play it in 3d? I would think that could just be something in the game you could turn on and off, maybe added as DLC.

I don't think you need a separate GT5. Not sure how "that" quote implies that. It should have the ability to be easily set on and off, like how the actual 3D TVs will work.

I bet it's a bundling thing where the 3D version is bundled with a pair of 3D glasses.

I can see the potential of this thing. This is believe it or not, revolutionary in racing simulation games.

Regarding 3DTV however, I may have to hate Sony for this. I feel like they're treating PD like a pet. They'll probably use GT5 to promote their 3DTV when it launches like how they used them (PD) previously to promote PSPGO. Sony probably forced PD to release GTPSP on the PSPGo's launch, as they will more-likely force them here to release GT5 in the beginning era of 3D technology.

In a way, I feel bad for Kaz. With all the release dates mumbo jumbo, fans are starting to turn towards him and his team in hatred. Fortunately I will never be those ones.

I can see how there could be some truth to your thoughts. I wouldn't put it past Sony's marketing team to try and use GT5 as a showcase for their "grand" ideas.

I like your thinking too! It wasn't too long ago that PD was saying that the game was ready and could be shipped anytime.

I wouldn't feel too sorry for them though because they stand to make a ton of cash when GT5 is finally released.

I like that they are adding stuff, but i guess less than 1% of people who buy this game will ever use it and its just delaying the game for people who just want to play the flippin game.

Okay, that is a neat feature with the GPS and all but in all honesty just how many of regular everyday gamers are going to utilise this? Be completely honest with yourself for a moment and think about it. Are you going to take time off of work, school, or whatnot to find an actual track in the game and then race it in real life just to see your ghost car on the game track? In all honesty if I had the means to hit up an honest to life race track in a race car I wouldn't be playing GT much, I would be racing actual cars.

Again, it is a neat feature that could be freaking amazing for people with disposable incomes and the ability to skirt responsibilities for a while but to the average gamer it is just a fancy add-on that won't get any utilisation.

sh*t, if I had that car and access to any of those tracks I wouldnt need GT5.

That isn't the whole point to the GPS feature. This feature can make players race against real-life driver's replay in the track. With how close GT is getting to real-life, it can be a revolutionary feature of actually comparing the accuracy of the game.

Of course, not everyone's going to buy the car and go to the tracks. This is just the start of something big, similar to how GT1 became the first driving simulator, ever. Imagine if future cars (not just Toyota), have this memory card feature. Drivers and players worldwide will then be able to compare their race times in the game against reality and real world. I can imagine real race drivers using this feature to practice for an upcoming race.

Don't care anything about this feature. It would be nice to have Ben/Arnold write an article about the next up and coming feature that will be put in the game. That feature will be….wait for it…..

Sounds like they're thinking like Sony and planning well ahead so the game is still incredible and offers something new even after 3 years of playing it.

I like games like that. If they keep adding great stuff to it, I'm happy to wait however long it takes.

Ah, so now we see the truth. The game has been delayed so that it can launch along side Sony's full line of 3D TVs…

Makes sense I guess, if you have a 3D TV you'll want something to do with it. No point shipping GT5 a few months earlier if a delay let's you cross promote the game and TVs at the same time.

*sigh*
::waits::
I'm gonna have to give in on getting a 3D TV now, aren't I?

Hmmmm, the GPS sounds interesting

Arnold should get his Z into one of these tracks 🙂 (Laguna Seca? maybe too far, but it'd be great)

TheHighlander

Laguna Seca is a fun track.

To give you an idea of how *good* GT4's graphics are. I raced around Laguna Seca I don't want to guess how many times in the game, but I've never even been within 500 miles of the place.

Now the thing is, I can see cars zipping around a corder on an anonymous race track on TV and recognize Laguna Seca simply because of the experience of driving it in game.

I love that.

One thing I would personally kiss the creators of Gran Turismo for, if they could be persuaded to do it, is for them to include the old route (pre-1987) Silverstone race track in England. I use to play a game on an ancient 8-bit home computer called Revs. It was a F3 racing simulation, and one of the circuits it had was the Silverstone F1 circuit. When they modified the circuit in the late 80's for 'safety' they destroyed it – IMHO – it's just not the same any more. No where near as fast.

Still it's funny, racing games have this way of getting in your head. They create the 'lean' factor where you lean into the corners as you play, and you learn the course almost as well as if you had truly driven it. I'm not saying I could drive the real thing very well, even knowing the route like the back of your hand is no substitute for actually driving it…

I dont see the point of the having the GPS. How many gamers will use that? How many gamers will travel to a track? How may gamers would buy a car with that GPS, let alone buy the GPS just to do that? If this is whats taking the game so long, I say move on! DONT GET ME WRONG that is a cool idea but its going to be a useless commodity in the end! unless im misunderstanding something!?!?

Second if they release a 3d enabled and a standard game thats rediculous. Im waiting long enough for the game so if they are releasing them seperate ill wait for the 3-d game. Cool features but I'd rather just play the game as it is intended. I want a simulator and i want it soon. Not later because they keep adding stuff, put it in the next game, otherwise we'll never get it!

These are amazing achievements no doubt, and it is really cool. But is it needed really? Maybe this day and age there still is developers that want to keep pushing the envelope so thats good!
