Qore: Bioshock 2 Single-Player Quest Is At Least 10 Hours

Every once in a while, we download the latest Qore episode and see if we can find some interesting little details. And we're especially interested when one of our most anticipated titles of 2010 is part of the show.

Bioshock 2 is right around the corner and for all those who enjoyed the stellar original, it's bound to be a Day 1 purchase. However, because the FPS genre has been a proven multiplayer haven, some are often skeptical about purchasing these games for the single-player campaign. We can easily point to the four-hour campaigns in titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 . But there are two things you should realize about Bioshock 2 : firstly, like the first title, there will be a heavy emphasis on a well-written storyline. Secondly, just because 2K has decided to implement a multiplayer mode this time around, that does not mean the single-player quest has suffered. Thankfully, according to what we heard in Qore, you spend the "first 10 hours" in the dark; everything about you remains a mystery for quite some time. Now, I suppose they could wrap it up quickly with a big ol' climax right after that 10-hour mark, but even if that's the case, you're looking at an adventure that is of a satisfying length.

We have to keep a close eye on how developers approach the single-player aspect in games where multiplayer may be insanely popular. But perhaps we should never have worried about this game; the storyline and plot was guaranteed to be crucial.

That is a narrow minded approach. The first game fit on one disc and looked good. And by all accounts, it was a great game.

How often does a game (the first Bioshock)of such critical acclaim, come out with a sequel that sucks? Can't think of one. They just build upon the last one, and typically make a better game.

Me? Looking forward to this one. Although I completely stand with you on waiting until the price comes down. Games are too expensive to pay full price.

Nightmar, I think he just means now that they have to pack a multiplayer onto that same DVD the campaign may suffer.

Not much into Bio but the story was engaging, however being "in the dark" for ten hours sounds grueling. However the multiplayer in it will probably not be as robust as something like cod (Yup my friends and I refer to it as if it were the fish) It will probably be something good but a tad tacked on.

I'm wondering where this idea of having MP in a game means other aspects, like the SP, has to suffer?

When we move up a gen and the graphics require more work, do we worry about that affecting the SP experience? Is it so hard to believe that a game can do both well?

….and I see tales of MW2's SP campaign have it down to 4 hours now…..pretty soon, hearsay will have it "over in a heartbeat".

It comes from DVDs and the dev teams focusing more on making the multiplayer the best aspect because that is the trend with the kids these days.

DVD gimp effect. Just when you think you have a great game, oops, compressions and DLC are the only way to go.

After this news I actually fear that BS2 will be feeling it in the multiplayer.

The DVD gimp effect is the true reason behind releasing the stuff they "cut from the game for flow reasons" or whatever, as DLC.

I rented MW2 and beat it in two afternoons. And I would consider myself a person that plays games slowly. Just like when I read a book, I like to take my time and not rush it. I would have been pissed if I had bought the game and beat it that fast.

That being said, I am looking forward to Bioshock 2. I bought the original the same day that I got my surround sound and have to say it kinda creeped me out. First time a game did that in years.

i have absolutely no doubt in the quality of bioshock since they have 3 different teams working on it, that shows commitment.
the thing im worried about is the main character.
i dont know if playing as a big daddy the whole game is a good idea.
i loved bioshock it should of got GOTY 07 and its still one of the best available today.
but im still on the fence as to whether changing your character to a big daddy was a good idea.
i loved bioshock so much and changing it, i dunno im skeptical.
immagine GOW 3 coming out and instead of playing as kratos you played as a titan.
and the lack of a demo certainly has not helped.
they should of released it last year like they were originally planing.
then i would of bought it, now i have half the cash and 1/6th of the time to play it.
ill wait till reviews than may grab it from the bargain bin in the drought season.

Playing as a big daddy… Why the hell would they take the worst level of part one and turn it into a full game?

I played the demo for the first game, and I couldn't get into it. The graphics and sound were absolutely amazing, but this gameplay and story just didn't "click" with me. Then, for some reason, my friend bought the game for me this past Christmas (chances are, it was the only $19.99 game he could find at the time). I've been playing it the past few days, and my original feelings still hold. I'd be willing to give the sequel a rent, but with a packed few months that include 'Heavy Rain', 'Dante's Inferno', and 'God of War III', it's definitely on the back-burner. Again, though, the graphics are INSANE!!! Great job on 2K's behalf there.

I'm with you. But to start off, I never think that you should base a game like this off the demo… I just don't think it gives you enough time to understand the character and story… which, from what I hear, is pretty amazing in this game.

But I just didn't get into the game either. My brother really seemed to like it though,so maybe someday I'll sit down with both of them and give them a playthrough…but it wont be anytime soon.

Yeah, I played the demo and I didn't even bother with the game after that. My friend told me when he bought me the game that the demo doesn't do the game justice, and that I should give it another chance. Well, I still couldn't get into the game, but I do agree that the demo didn't do it justice. My brother is also a huge fan of BioShock. He used to have it when he had a 360. He got rid of it when he switched over to PS3, but hasn't had a chance to re-buy it. I think I might give him my copy since EB Games will probably only give me $1 to trade it in, anyway.

I agree with the article. All these multiplayer games make me wince whenever I hear a claim about the length of the single player campaign. We'll see I guess.

BioShock was my GOTY for 2007. I expect another great game on February 9. I haven't decided on whether to buy any of the two SE versions of the game, though.

The special edition DOES look pretty sweet. A vinyl record? Come on! That's wicked! =D

10 hours seems short to me, I think it took me longer on the first one.

On second thought, MW2 was longer than 4 hours so maybe you are just going off of playing it on casual and flying through it.

Rogue Warrior on the other hand was about 3 hours (on hard) and completely abysmal.

It's sad when a 10 hour game is considered to be a satisfying length.

I really like FPSs, but I get tired of online death matches pretty quickly. That's the main reason I haven't bought a FPS in the last year.

I loved the first game mainly because of it's focus on flushing out a story. Sadly I'll probably be passing on the sequel.

I couldn't care less about Bioshock 2 right now… my mind is on what I love, Hack and Slash 😉 Oh and heavy rain, which seems to be a real ground breaking game.

Yeah, sue me.
