Ben-DutkaSo far this year, I've been hinting that many developers with super promising projects will immediately make comparisons to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , simply because of the "measuring stick" quality I've spoken of in regards to Naughty Dog's masterpiece.
Well, it's happening again. Yesterday, Battlefield 2: Bad Company developer DICE, while still paying the correct amount of respect to Uncharted 2 , claimed their vistas were superior in terms of graphics. And because many associate a raising of the visual bar with 2009's Game of the Year, everyone is looking to make comparisons to what could be the best-looking titles of 2010. Take Heavy Rain , for instance. We all know it's going to look fabulous – the footage we've seen thus far is might impressive – but according to GamerTell , one Sony representative who showed off the game at this year's CES show took it a step further. When prompted during a presentation of a Heavy Rain demo, the rep said, "graphically, it blows Uncharted 2 away." You can actually hear the rep say this in the video provided through the link and if you're on the fence, you can decide for yourself on February 23 when Quantic Dream's massively anticipated new IP arrives. For our part, it's very difficult to compare the two sets of graphics presentations; they're both striving for completely different things within completely different gameplay formats.
But perhaps what everyone is starting to note is that most all games in these "best graphics" conversations tend to be PlayStation 3 exclusives; Uncharted 2 , Killzone 2 , God of War III , Heavy Rain , Gran Turismo 5 , etc. It's worth noting…as I look back on the dark days of 2007.

I said it before I'll say it again graphics really aren't that much of a selling point and nor should they be, Uncharted 2 was just nice enough to throw it in for free.
IT should. cause IMO whats gonna drive this title is its graphics and Story.

Did Dice really say Bad Company 2's vistas were graphically superior to Uncharted 2's vistas or that Bad Company 2's vistas were superior because they were beautiful AND LARGER than Uncharted 2's vistas? There is a distinction there.
Obviously, I've yet to see 'Heavy Rain' in action on my home setup, but from what I've seen thus far, I would have to imagine that it does surpass 'Among Thieves.'
Probably because the game is so controlled (of course there are many, many choices to make, but each is likely meticulously detailed so the player doesn't feel they made the 'wrong' decision), as opposed to 'Among Thieves' or nearly every other non-rail shooter. You can't just randomly pull a gun and start shooting everything/everyone up, your actions have to make sense in context, allowing the developers to plan for every scenario.
i'd have to disagree based on the gameplay footage i've seen, plus uncharted 2 is stylized. while heavy rain aims for a more realistic look. And in my opinion, emotion is expressed far better on the faces in uncharted than on the faces i've seen in heavy rain footage. so yeah i'd have to say that sony rep should think twice before he speaks, i'm sure the debate is a lot more complicated.

Environments can be "harsh" while vistas can be "large." It's two different things.
HR just looks much more gloomy and dark than Uncharted 2, which had the richest color palette of all time. So it would be difficult to tell, but if any game can pull it off it should be this one.

True… Im not as impressed with the vids & trailers as I was a few years ago. I'm hoping QD has stayed on top of the leading edge. If they surpass UC2 in graphics I will be happy. Let us not forget that UC2 has raised more bars than graphics. Game play, physics, story and acting.
Uncharted 2 has ruined me for other games…

I personally think the future lies not in graphics, but animation. Without great animation, the greatest graphics in the world are nothing more than pretty robots, great for screenshots, but a chore to play. I think thats part of what made uncharted 2 so unbelieveably awesome. sure it had untouchable graphics, but the shining star for me was the quality of the animation.
Heavy Rain and Splinter Cell: Conviction both have a feb23 release date…………now um getting really confused…….
Simply, I don't think you can compare the two. Two very different games; different colour scheme and lighting rig setup. Textures and overall detail will be affected differently.
Similar making a comparison between Uncharted 2 and BC2 is also not right. BC2 should compare itself to Killzone2. Are people already forgetting what a graphical masterpiece Killzone2 was – and still is!!!

With all due respect, i read that article a few times, i do not remember DICE saying that their graphics would be superior to U2.
Infact i remember them specifically saying that they weren't going to make a claim such as that.
I hope people arent just getting all roughed up, just becaused its U2..

best graphical game for this year has to go down to crysis 2 no doubt.
thats if they dont gimp the PC version just because of it going to consoles.
if crysis 2 comes out and is not as much of a graphical leap as crysis 1 than crytek better start running because there going to have a massive army after them.

my 3 year old toshiba notebook runs crysis with no problems.

I'll tell you why im not suprised, graphics story visuals and feel is what HR is all about. so was uncharted2 and thats why both these games have great graphics. HR is better probably because they've had more time, and it's been they're only focus.
After watching the newest episode of Qore, I'm not debating whether to just buy this or rent this first (it was originally a guaranteed buy for me). The whole 'push five buttons at once that aren't near each other or your character dies' thing was a bit of turn-off for me.
The graphics looks INSANE, though!
I can beleive it in some aspects, but have to disagree in others. The Graphics on Heavy Rain are pretty good, like awesome. But sometimes the graphics look kind of…odd? In the gameplay graphics with the PI, the black guy when he talks for the first time, his whole face around his mouth like shoves up into his nose it looks like. After that, it's alright but it still does it, lol. Doesn't do that in Uncharted 2, but they look kind of cartoony actually than real when it comes down to it. Come on, it's the Crash Bandicoot people, lol. Uncharted 2 looks fu**ing awesome, it really does, but the way it looks does look a bit cartoony and soft but that goes in favor of the game, though. At least their mouths don't shoot up into their nose when they talk, lol.

To use one of the quote from the Simpsons:"Don't say things we can't take back". I mean I am glad Heavy Rain will have kick ass visuals but blow Uncharted 2 away? I don't think it's possible.
