Every time I hear EA talk about Battlefield: Bad Company 2 when it's in the shadow of other games, all I can think of is, "I won't be ignored , Dan."
Okay, it's not as frightening as that famous line but you get the gist. Last year, when everyone was going hog-wild over Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , EA was quick to pipe up and say their impending shooter, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 , could indeed measure up to Infinity Ward's effort. Now, developer DICE is talking graphics…and they're not afraid to say BC2 is "reaching" the high quality bar set by Naughty Dog's brilliant Uncharted 2: Among Thieves . They do admit, however, they won't surpass that level of visual greatness. According to what producer Gordon Van Dyke told VideoGamer , his game is looking pretty darn good right now. Said Van Dyke concerning the comparison:
"I wouldn't make that kind of claim. Uncharted 2 is an amazing-looking game. But we're reaching that level of quality. It's going to be hard for any game to be able to make a claim that they look better. But we are getting to, I feel, that level, where it's looking very impressive. When you see it – and I've heard other people say it as well, so it's not just me – other people are saying it's getting there."
He adds that BC2 features "much bigger environments," though, which is a feather in the team's cap. He also remains deferential to Naughty Dog and clearly gives them all the respect in the world, saying that when he looked at Uncharted 2 , he said, "damn them! What have they done to the rest of us? I was looking for something where I could say, okay, that we're doing better." So DICE put a ton of effort into their vistas and it seems they're gonna blow us away. In fact, Van Dyke has this message for the U2 developers:
"Naughty Dog, if you hear this, I challenge you versus our vistas!"
You know what's great about "measuring stick games" like Uncharted 2 ? It forces other designers to put forth that extra effort in every aspect of their productions, thereby permanently upping the level of quality in the industry. And DICE has already given us the original Bad Company along with Mirror's Edge and Dead Space , so we have every confidence they'll deliver an awesome sequel. If they wish to challenge Naughty Dog in a certain visual area, more power to 'em.

This is how competition should be in the industry . Your confidence shouldn't affect your respect for someone else's achievements . I hope some other people ( Turn 10 ) can learn from them .
i missed out on the first bad company, sadly.
but i like DICE games ever since BF 1942 ( i loved doing kamikazes lol)
anyways, ill be sure to check this one out.
but between this and mag….dayum thats a lot of shooting…
gotta say, as a person who loves MW2, this game is looking awfully good and one title that I might be willing to drop MW2 for. Since MW2 seems to be a breeding ground for cheater scum, it just might be possible that BF:BC2 might just be a breath of fresh air that can stand up on it's own for playability, graphics and storyline, but not be so immensely popular you have every known hack attempting to break its code and sour the MP gaming that I've come to love and enjoy.
Looking forward to this for sure 🙂
I disagree with quite a few comments, comparing BC to the 1st Uncharted isn't really a valid comparison. 2 different types of games, and Uncharted is an exclusive, which has no boundries graphicly. If BC2 were in fact a PS exclusive then I could take them a bit more seriously about calling out Naughty Dog and U2 with graphics. Something I always noticed that made BC stand out was the sound design, its unmatched. Some of, if not the best I will here in a FPS. In my opinion the BC2 Beta DESTROYED MW2, but I won't drone on about how much I think MW2 is the biggest let down of the century. DICE cannot top U2 graphicly, but they will craft one of the best FPS's of 2010.
is it true that there was no game mode in Bad Company that allowed you to respawn? I'm not really attracted to games like those, they usually turn into campfests.
There was re-spawning just like the previous battlefields. Band Company has two game modes: Conquest and the original mode (I forget what is was called but you had to progressively capture or destroy a series of pairs of crates).
In conquest you spawn like the previous battlefields.
In the "other one" you re-spawn at a base whether you are defending or attacking.
Too bad for them Uncharted 2 is a benchmark in so many other categories than just graphics.
In fact I'd say graphics isn't even U2's strongest feature, even though it does have the best graphics I've ever seen in a game!
Zactly. Uncharted 2 does everything 100% awesome. The reason the graphics thing comes up alot is because you can instantly tell it looks amazing. You have to spend some time with the game to see that the sound, story, acting, and pacing is 100% perfect.
Oh man these guys make me laugh. How is a multi-plat going to look better? Oh well they're just crazy.
Thats being a bit biased isnt it?
Your saying ALL multi-plat games ever created, will never even look anything close to a exclusive?
Why can't a dev working on a multiplat game, make it look absolutely amazing on the ps3?
Why do they have to make it the same as the 360? Because that is in fact microsofts fault for having an inferior machine.
Yup that's what i'am saying because they don't have enough time to work on all to make them look as good.
I thought EA Redwood aka Visceral made Dead Space?
Anyway, DICE is a talented developer and I hope BFBC2 does well for them. I'm burned out on shooters though so I won't be playing it. Where are my RPGs?
DICE seriously need to shut up!
honestly i have never seen them like this, there normally quiet and modest but they have been gloating so fu**ing much im starting to think dan greenwalt has switched from turn 10 to DICE.
im really looking forward to battlefield bad company 2, i loved the first one because the sound was completley INCREDIBLE!
for once gun fire sounds like gun fire, not like someone tooting off.
and the building destruction was so cool, why go through the door when you can create your own?
how are they gloating?
they are putting themselves out there, trying to get some rep, they have a very FINE bunch of games under them, so they deserve it.
This entire industry is all about FUN isnt it?
Sounds to me like they just were having a bit of fun with another Dev.
no they are gloating.
ever since the MW2 having no dedicated servers fiasco DICE have been hitting against IW non stop.
i love DICE there a brilliant development studio but nothing pisses me off more than snoody, up themselves people.
MW2 did not have dedicated servers BFBC 2 does so they had to slice the vein open and rub salt into it.
get over it, move on, make your game dont gloat about it.
developers should be talking about their games not dissing others.
thats what made me not buy forza 3, i was really excited for it but dans fat mouth put me off.
It's always good to hope i guess 🙂
Q!
"i am home"
I'll be happy to test drive a demo, but I don't think I have room for more FPSs.
I would like to drive a demo… It is on my list for purchase. By the way, MAG has very impressive graphics in 1080p, Crisp texturing and nice vistas, but the game play feels stiff and slower than MW1 or MW2. Killzone2 and I think BC2 are better games. BC2 should feel better at least than MAG!
