We know 3D gaming is coming but it may be available to many sooner than initially expected.
The PlayStation 3 is fully capable of delivering the 3D experience already but we still need the TV to go along with it. Late last year, we heard Sony would be delivering 3D-compatible HD Bravias to stores towards the end of 2010, but it seems we should be seeing them earlier. According to Now Gamer , Sony has revealed that Sony's LX900 3D HDTVs will go on sale this summer; they'll range from 40 to 60 inches and boast full 1080p resolution. Apparently, stereoscopic 3D is all the rage at this year's Consumer Electronics Show and Sony wants to reassert their claim as the only company fully prepared for this technological leap. As CEO Howard Stringer said, "Sony is the only company fully immersed in every link of the 3D value chain." Ah, but the question is, how much will these new 3D-enabled TVs cost? HDTVs have certainly come way down in price over the past decade but they're not exactly cheap even today, so if you wanted a big-ass 60" 1080p 3D HDTV, that might cost you a pretty penny. But won't it be worth it to become absorbed in games as you never have before?
Other TVs will undoubtedly boast this compatibility in the future as well; heck, some already do . Remember, last year's report was that 40 million gamers will have 3D HDTVs in their homes by 2012…which means you'll probably cave eventually!
I don't know which tech that Mitsubishi uses but they've already announced a new adapter for their present legacy screens that will work with the new standard. What this means is that if you already have a tv that's capable of 3D, now you will be able to get the adapter that works with the new stardard that was just recently agreed to.
From what I have read is that any monitor or tv that runs a frequency of 100mhz or more can run can do 3d. I have an Akai tv which run @ 120mhz
I wonder if it can run 3d. Oh forgot that sony & nvidia are pushing active shutter glasses that reqiure some sort of transmitter.
Quick question, does anybody have a Phillips ambilight tv? if you do does it work with games?
In need for an update of my 3 year old Sony Bravia HD1080i, I could just imagine playing Killzone 2 in 3D or uncharted 2 the future seems very promising,Sony changed the way I watch movies at home And there doing it again.
Just came across this.
Toshiba is going to have tv's running the cell processor used on the PS3 to convert 2d movies to 3d in realtime.
For more follow the link
http://www.smarthouse.com.au/TVs_And_Large_Display/3D_TV/U2K7B4D6
That article will make you appreciate what's under the hood of the ps3.
Interesting article, but I would love to ask Toshiba a couple of questions.
Um…how are you going to convert a 2D presentation into 3D? Without images from two points of view there isn't sufficient information to infer very much 3D. I'm very skeptical of that. Toshiba has an itch that they still want to scratch about using video processing to 'upgrade' a video image in some form. They first of all tried to claim that upscaled DVD was the same as BluRay – in short, it's not. Now they want to have us believe that expanded (or whatever they call their process) 2D is somehow 3D?
A 480hz screen that feeds two 240Hz image streams one to each eye? OK….but that still doesn't answer how they think they're gonna somehow manufacture the image data needed for stereoscopic 3D. Gizmodo has an image of the TV that shows a night time skyline shot from the air. I bet it's a slow panning shot too. If you're panning right then the take a pair of adjacent frames, the first frame becomes the left eye's image and then the second becomes the right eye's frame. With a little bit of processing and in-betweening you could manufacture a slightly delayed video feed for the left eye when tracking to the right, or vice verse when tracking left. That will work OK for a night time skyline because the points of reference are contrasting against the background, and a fly-by is a slow pass, so the illusion of 3D could be maintained, but try a fast action shot in daylight and I think you'll see that all is not quite so well.

@ Highlander
I believe they're going to convert to 3d using live tracking of motion points in the video. For example someone walking on the street- the speed at which he moves compared to the background gives away the depth (like when you're in a vehicle and closer things move faster than further things, e.g. luscious glowing hills of Pandora). I believe they'll accomplish this by having the cell processor be working on video perhaps 5-10 minutes ahead of what you're watching, converting to 3D as it goes. Similar tech is used where an aerial camera-drone films terrain and then that data is turned into a highly accurate 3D representation. The tech sounds crazy, but these are crazy times we live in, and you know that better than most 🙂
Indeed, my puzzlement about the method they use to infer the second viewpoint is that even looking ahead in the video stream and showing a time delayed 3D interpretation of the original 2D, How will they cope with standard movies, games and TV. For the tech to work well, assuming it works anything like the way we're presuming, it needs nice steady camera movement and a decent number of frames with the same reference points in order to work. A camera bouncing all over the place, or panning in curves or fast cuts from scene to scene, or angle to angle, will likely make this very difficult, and possibly quite hit and miss. It will work well in the demos because you can use those slow panning shots of close-ups or landscapes with lots of objects at different distances that will show out in 3D. So no doubt it will be impressive, but feed it a random DVD, BluRay, game or TV show and I wonder how well it will do.
As you say though, we live in interesting times technologically speaking. I hope that this is more effective than the upscaling technology Toshiba touted over BluRay when HD-DVD fell apart though.
@Kash,
Very interesting article, Thanks.
After having retinal detachment on my right eye last year, I have been afraid to try and watch a 3D movie 🙁
Don't think its gonna work for me, my eye sight on the right is really messed up and I don't think its gonna be enough to generate the 3D effects.
I have a strong feeling that this stereoscopic TV craze will fizzle out in a year or two. We don't have true 3D TV until the scientists invented a holographic projector (star trek style).
I predict it will make people sick. When you watch for small chucks of time at demos, that is one thing. If you watch it for several hours a night, well, that is something else entirely.
some people do get sick from watching 3D, most of the time its people who get motion sickness.
funny enough i always get motion sickness hence i can not read a book, watch a movie or play my PSP in the car, unless i want to redecorate the interior.
and i can watch 3D movies absolutely no problem, ive been to the Imax like 15 times for say 2 hours a time and have had no symptoms.
luckily, id be pissed if i could not enjoy 3D because of that.
Sony probably bumped up their release dates because Samsung announced at CES that they will have their monitors available this summer. I have the ability to add 3D to one of my televisions but haven't purchased the box yet.
I'll cave when Vizio makes an affordable one. 😛
Wish I could afford one :(,well atleast my pic is keeping me happy!
Why waste money in another TV, when you can buy more PS3 games WTF! Anyways I got a 3D ready 60'120HZ 1080p Mitsubishi TV!
3D TV is the work of the evil one, I have proof!
Why, I was walking peacefully past my local moving picture emporium, when I spotted a local urchin emerging from the palace of illusion with his Mummy and Daddy. The poor waif had a sickly pale pallor, and appeared to be twitching slightly. I happened to over hear their discussion and the child was discussing something called Avatar, apparently it's some kind of moving picture entertainment in three Dimensions.
Now, friends, I know what you're thinking. Surely everyone knows that moving pictures are two dimensional. We all know that the screen is flat. Three dimensions? Wouldn't everyone just fall off the edge.
Well, I wouldn't have mentioned this to you heavenly people, except for an article I spied recently discussing something called a PS3. Apparently it too is capable of creating images that are in the third dimension. Then I realized that this PS3 device is a video game machine. As most of you know, video games are the work of Satan, and this PS3 thing is black. Coincidence? I think not.
This diabolically dark device is bringing the satanic third dimension into our own homes. Our own homes!
The poor child I witnessed escaping the foul 3D presentation looked as though he'd bee drained of his life force by some awful creature. We should let this be a lesson to us all my friends. The heathen are on the move again. They are bringing this filthy, devil spawned technology into our homes and moving picture emporiums. Do they not know that it is written "The righteous shall consume images in 2D while the unrighteous dance in the third dimension with the foul one."?
We must to something to stop the spread of this evil seed. We cannot allow this threat to our society, our faith and our economy to succeed. Take action my friends, boycott these 3D things and buy your moving pictures on video tape, as the good Lord intended.

LMAO!
nice.
the kid was probably sick because of motion sickness, some people get that from 3D movies.
i wanted to watch the avatar in 3D with a friend 2 weeks ago but couldnt because he gets sick watching 3D so he went to normal and i wanted to go to 3D so i waited.
you cant watch the avatar in 2D, thats a law now you MUST watch it in 3D.
watching it in 2D incurs a 2000 dollar fine and 4 years in a minimum security prison.
That's odd that it would have such an effect on anyone. The only "3D" in the movie was particle effects, and they were hardly noticeable after a while.
Your post was entertaining though, Highlander. :-/
@club80
Um….?????
Can you not smell parody and sarcasm in my post?
Really?
Did I need to add emoticons? I thought it was pretty clear I was writing a parody of the Orange County "church lady" and her rant about video games being the work of the Devil…
Ah well, I guess I did too good a job.
@Highlander
I didn't read about the church lady incident, so I guess it did go over my head just a bit. But no need to get defensive…and an extra no-need to start a forum discussion just because someone didn't get your reference.
Club80,
Even without the other article as a reference, I still felt that my post was clearly a parody of a certain puritanical type of reaction that is unfortunately all to common among super-conservative parents in the western world.
As for getting defensive, it seems to me that we're finding that in equal measure today…
@ Club80 – Don't join the "Can't take a joke club" that's floating around here. We have enough of those people as it is.
LOL Highlander,
Sounds like you're just trying to get yourself a hot prom date with Miss Ole Frumpy
I'm not going to be playing the equivalent of pop-up-books am I?
FIFA 2010 WORLD CUP TO BE BROADCAST IN 3D!!!!!
ooooooooooo yea! that one im excited about.
anyway they said that IF you have a sony bravia 120 Hz or above you can already watch content in 3D, so i wont need to upgrade after all.
THANK GOD!
that just made my decision allot easier, ive been having hell deciding between the panasonic KURO or the sony Z5500.
but the panasonic only goes to 100Hz so if i choose that i can kiss 3D goodbye, because the Z series does a massive 200 Hz.
not to mention the Z series is 5K cheaper.
picture quality is crap in comparison, but 3D!!!
come on who can resist watching the 2010 world cup in 3D?
now i can watch Italy win the world cup again in my living room. literally.
Damn you! Now I really feel like I need to buy a new TV 🙂
Watching Brazil playing and see the players running inside my living room would be too cool.
Rumo ao Hexa Brasil!!

LMAO!
yeah, i know.
thats why im trying to figure out if thats true, i remember reading a article saying that 200Hz TVs will be 3D compatible but every other source i check does not mention it.
i dont want to go and buy the Z series thinking it will support 3D when it wont.
does anyone know if the women soccer world cup is going to be in 3D cause damn that would be a reason to invest in a 3D tv.
not gonna lie, but I would feel so stupid with glasses on in my room looking at my tv lol.. just saying..
I finally got an 42" LG HDTV a year ago… spent around $1100… 2 $100 each HDMI's (Best Buy guy convinced me I needed them for 120Hz) & a used Rent-a-Center stand for $100(wanted an open style and nobody had them) Bottom line, I love my TV… too much to replace it already.
I don't see myself going for a 3D one soon unless my finances improve. Anyway, if they were smart and wanted to push this tech they wouldn't add too much to the price. Why does this feature have to cost a lot? Isn't it as simple as a different type of _____ (whatever is in them in the first place)?
Hardware or software… It shouldn't be THAT much of an addition to the price, except that early adopters will pay the premium to prove to the manufacturers people want it… besides they'll make money on the back end selling those glasses to families won't they. Then everyone will be making the glasses! You'll be able to get them in Wayfarer style, aviator style, Lennon style, Terminator style, glow in the dark and anything else somebody can think up! LOL
i think… no, i KNOW they will be extremely expensive and ridiculously over priced. no doubt about that.
