3.8 Million PS3s Sold Over Holidays: A 76% Increase

How did the PlayStation 3 do this past holiday season? Pretty darn well, thank you.

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the PS3 has enjoyed the "most successful holiday season in the history" of the machine, as sales numbers showed a 76% year-over-year increase. During the five weeks following the last week of November 2009, Sony managed to sell 3.8 million units worldwide, thanks to the existence of the new and cheaper PS3 Slim model and several massive exclusive titles. SCEI also attributes this big surge to the influx of more PSN content; they add that there are now around 38 million registered Network accounts, which is a darn good sign. Software cited for the PS3's excellent holiday season were Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Assassin's Creed II , Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , and the Japanese release of Final Fantasy XIII . Looking forward into 2010, they unsurprisingly mention upcoming exclusives like God of War III , Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5 and ModNation Racers, and SCEI promises to "vigorously enhance the network content and services, while tapping a wider audience through the introduction of a new Motion Controller." Oh, and don't forget about the advent of 3D gaming, which should make its presence felt this year.

All in all, we'd have to say these numbers are fairly impressive, and Sony likely had a very Happy New Year. They were aware of these stats before the press release went out, ya know.

I'm glad to hear Sony did well this holiday season. I hope the upcoming releases for 2010 help them sell even more consoles.

I don't know about 360, but Wii sold 3 mil.

I think the Wii sold three million in the US alone, while the PS3 sold 3.8 million globally. Just pointing out a factoid; don't hurt me! (I know certain people would get angry if I brought up anything positive about the wii, although for this site that would be the extreme minority.).

Kowhoho, if the Wii never sold another unit, it would still be a ridiculous success story. In fact, it has to be considered the biggest console success of this or any generation. And by that, I mean in terms of sales, hype, longevity. Most everyone on this site is mature about it. If they don't they are snobs. I have heard many state it is a fad. Not quite sure what they mean by that. We are going on 3 years for this fad, and it is still going strong. Probably will until Nintendo comes out with its next "fad".

For all of the Wii's glory, it does have short comings. Hopefully Nintendo is using some of that cash to come up with a new system to fix those shortcomings. How about 720 or 1080 for starters and 16:9 widescreen thank you very much.

As for the PS3, thank god it has caught serious traction and momentum. Cheers to a great upcoming 2010!

Nothing beats ps2 though! That system just won't die. It's still selling! Not a whole lot, but it's selling, alright. 140 million and counting, and at this point it's all profit for that system.

Kowhoho, you are right, that is impressive for the PS2. One thing I will say about it, it that in its hayday, the PS2 did not have the competition that the Wii currently has.

The Gamecube was no match, nor the original Xbox was no match for the PS2. The Wii is up against two technically superior machines (PS3 and 360), and damn if it didn't do what it did.

@ MyWorstNightmar – Don't tell me you've had the Wii for three years and don't know it has a 16:9 setting.

LOL, my thoughts exactly, haven't you been into your Wii's system settings? it doesn't have HD, but it does have 16:9, for the games at least, some menus remain 4:3 and stretched.

MyWorstNightmar

Alienage, yes, it is set to 16:9 BUT, you still have the cropped sides to it. You can change the setting on your tv to stretch the screen to fit the widescreen, BUT, i don't want to play a stretched out game.

Sorry if I didn't explain that first off.

Sounds good

Still, Japan > Europe > United States

In terms of adapting to next-gen

FF XIII must have played a huge role in Japan . Let's see what GT5 can do in Europe and what GoW III can do in the US . Q1 should be interesting .

Good news, I bet every new owner is happy. I think we all benefit from Sony selling well. More money to them which becomes invested back into Playstation and us. If its new content to the PSN or new games coming into development, we will all be rewarded over time for strong Playstation sales.

Great news! Hope those were adults who bought the systems ar mature people so the PS3 won't turn out to be what the 360 is with a bunch of little kids.

Now we just have to get these 4 million people buying games and getting on the PSN.

I know 3 people that got a PS3 in the past month and they still haven't created a PSN ID!

One guy I know from school shows up on my friends list as being offline for several months. Personally, I'm set to auto-sign-in just so I can stay connected. Some people, however, have no interest in being online.

ps3 users are buying games, its just that ps3 user have a lot more types of games to choose from compare to the 360. i mean what games sell a lot for 360, halo, call of duty, gears of war. while ps3 has killzone 2, metal gear solid 4, infamous, resistance, littlebigplanet, valkyria chronicles, uncharted, warhawk, and a bunch more coming out.

WOW awesome job Sony Keep going. I can bet with all these awesome exclusives Sony will always see an increase no matter what.

Now to convince my friends to get one, they just keep repeating the same BS no Sony;s only doing good now give it a few months and they will fall behind again, I think they are all brainwashed by M$ since they all work for them.

see sony.
see what happens when you dont charge a completley ludicrous price for your equipment?
thats the thing i hate about sony, they make brilliant high quality stuff but GOD DAM! IS IT OVERPRICED!
take their TVs for example.
55 inch samsung series 8 $6800
55 inch pioneer KURO which is the best TV on the market, better than the sony and samsung put together. $7500
55 inch sony XBR $8000
yea, its slightly better than the samsung, but SLIGHTLY no where near almost 2K better.
and the pioneer KURO which is said to be the best TV available bar NONE! its suppose to be a million times better than the sony XBR and its 500 bucks cheaper.
not to mention the pioneer has 10 times more features, more outputs, in every way shape and form its 10 times better than the sony.
so how can sony survive in the industry asking so much for their product?
that is exactly why i say there the new M$, they take the RRP of a product jack it up 40% and slap their badge on it.
no wonder there almost giving their TVs away because samsungs are outselling sony TVs by a ratio of 3:1.

Wow. That is incredible. I wonder what the current sales totals are for the PS3 & 360.

I want the PS3 to beat the 360 in sales just to shut up the 360 fanboys, otherwise there is no reason to care lol.

It's gotta be down to roughly a 2-3 million unit gap by now.

Has PS3 reached 30million?

Paolo Kutaragi

PS3 reached more than 31.3 million units worldwide before the end of 2009. And it topped the Xbox360 in Europe. PS3 is ahead of Xbox360 in Europe by around 300,000 units.

Granted, while I'm writing right now, there are more than 31.5 million sold PS3. Around 2.5-3 million PS3 will be sold by the end of March 2010. Sony planned to ship around 34 million PS3's in the fiscal year 4/09 to 4/10, they already shipped them, not that they only shipped them, they even sold them.

PS3 was a success in 2009 and its sales have exceeded Sony's expectations. They wanted to ship 34 million worldwide, and they will be shipping more than 36 million units by the end of the current fiscal year.

I some something I have never seen up till now this holiday season. Walked into a Sam's Club in Wisconsin and went down the console aisle and only 360's were there – Wii and PS3 sold out and waiting to get more in – kind of took me by suprise but in a good way!!!
