Capcom Will Develop All New IPs At Home In Japan

Okay, Square-Enix doesn't have a problem siding with Western developers , but the experience hasn't been great for Capcom and they've decided to head back home.

According to Kotaku , Capcom has decided to develop "all major new game IP at home in Japan;" company president Haruhiro Tsujimoto even went a step further to say he'd rid himself of all Western studios if there weren't so many games on the schedule and resources were so thin. He cited the failure of Bionic Commando as one of the reasons why they're making this move, but due to a pressing slate of titles, they won't cut all ties just yet. Added Tsujimoto:

"We are considering ways to separate the roles of activities in Japan and overseas. We plan to develop new titles primarily in Japan. Overseas companies may be used mostly to develop titles for existing game series with well-established characters and universal themes. Overseas companies will also handle certain parts and/or line-ups of such games."

Swedish studio GRIN was responsible for the mediocre Bionic Commando , which probably contributed to GRIN's closing last August. This comes hot on the heels of Lost Planet and Resident Evil maker Jun Takeuchi's claim that "cultural differences" between West and East simply don't make for smooth sailing. In some ways, there will always be differences; perhaps it's just a matter of being on the same page all the time…which can be tough to do.

I don't see a problem with this as long as it means Campcom re-evaluates itself and goes back to the glory days.

Capcom got me into gaming back in the days. Lately their games were great, but it just doesn't feel the same anymore.

Was Bionic Commando really that bad? I was considering picking it up now since it's so cheap now. Some one tell me.

Is it worth $20?

Does Capcom still make Megamans? I haven't seen those for a while.

Yea, MegaMan 9 was released about a year or so ago for WiiWare, PSN and LIVE. They are working on 10 now.

If it's going to be next gen all I want is updated graphics, none of this 3D bullshit.

LOL, contrast this with SE's latest thoughts on westernizing their games.

Water in the whiskey Highlander, water in the whiskey.

I'll take mine neat, no ice please. If you must provide water, make it something pure please, no chemicals. Whiskey is best sipped slowly so it has a chance to warm on the tongue and all the wonderfulness gets a chance to evaporate gently with each sip. Filling your nose with all the rich, malty, buttery, whiskey warmth….

I fear Square-Enix may be on the brink of spinning to many plates at once.

I don't think Capcom should use Western Developers for sequels either, Resident Evil 5 SUCKED IMO it was an act/adv sequel to a game in the survival horror genre, tell me that wasn't misleading! I wish they would make another Onimusha, but only if it is done by the people that handled it for ps2 because that was awesome. Devil May Cry series could use a new installment as well, and maybe a little revamping, or make 5 the final one and make it EPIC.

Sooooo, they think the Western studios suck and would like to wipe them out, and in the mean time they plan to trust them with major titled sequels? Sounds like they don't give a rip about whether established franchises are good or not, because they know a game with a number after it will sell well anyway. Look for Resident Evil 6 on rails with polite zombies.

I've been blessed with the ability to replay games well beyond their limits. That's what has been saving me as of late with all this Capcom bullshit. I played RE5 once and played RE1-4 and RECV just to get the taste out of my mouth.

Odd that they're having so many problems with cultural differences when SCEA seems to have a fairly good relationship with companies like Naughty Dog, their Santa Monica Studio, etc.
