Think you're the authority on video game statistics? You'll need to brush up on the latest and greatest by picking up this year's edition of the Guinness World Records 2010: Gamer's Edition .
Sold and distributed by Brady Games, it officially released yesterday and sells for $14.99 in the U.S.; for UK gamers, they can snag it on January 21 for the price of 15.00 pounds Sterling. This is the third book in the gamer series and it includes records like the Most Popular Video Game Series of All Time (this is Halo , by the way) and plenty of records ranging from old-school classic gaming to the best-selling titles of 2009. The Best Selling Video Game Series of All Time remains Super Mario Bros. (over 201 million copies sold across all genres and platforms), NBA Jam is The Highest Grossing Video Arcade of All Time (earning over $1 billion in its first year of release), and a truly nutty one: Longest Time Spent Playing an MMORPG. Sara Lhadi spent 16,799 hours playing Runescape between November 2004 and October 2009 and if you're wondering, that averages out to about 9 hours and 20 minutes of play time every day for the 5-year span. …what?!
This new Guinness Gamer's Edition also features a new format, as it no longer presents the information in a game-by-game structure. This time, everything is separated out into genre and sub-genre, which allowed the editors "to pick only the strongest and most relevant records in each topic area." Said Guinness World Records Gaming Editor, Gaz Deaves:
"With huge game releases, big announcements and long-standing records broken, this year has been great for gaming. The Gamer's Edition 2010 is all about what's great in videogames right now, and gamers of all ages and abilities will find something amazing in the new book, from the casual to the ultra-hardcore."
So, when are you picking up your copy? You just need it for your collection, even if you're not planning on reading it cover-to-cover. There are some records in there that are just plain…silly.
Besides the 9hr-a-day girl (she obviously must of had some help), the stat that shocked me was NBA Jam being "The Highest Grossing Video Arcade of All Time". I thought it would be some fighting game, or maybe Pac-Man.
EA plans on relaunching the NBA Jam franchise, and I don't blame them after seeing that figure.
I was thinking Street Fighter2. Back in the day the local mall had it in the Arcade and it was ALWAYS surrounded by people. I'll never forget I was doing some shopping on Christmas Eve with my parents and we walked past the Arcade and saw a dozen grown men huddled around SF2 and my Dad said something like "Isn't that sad, they don't have anything better to do on Christmas Eve", and all I could think of was how fun that must be compared to what I was forced into doing.
My thoughts exactly were a street fighter game. Thats insanse, i dont really rememebr owning NBA Jam, but i do remember playing it at a friends. But SF it seemed everyone owned that game, or Sonic. NBA Jam, really?
NBA Jam always had longer lines down here at the local casinos and mall. I know I spent more money in that machine than anything else at the time. Except the TMNT Arcade game and Smash TV.
I still think my 36 hour straight play-through of MGS 2 is pretty amazing. I did not stop playing the whole time. Seriously. I was really tired afterward…lol
I hope you're not talking about Metal Gear Solid 2. Cause I can do that game in five hours.
Was it your first time playing it?
Yes, it was my first time through the game. There were lots of instances that I kept dieing at, and I just took my time with it, 'cause I wanted to do everything without the use of any type of guide. I remember the pull-up part where you could do a couple hundred pull-ups and that way you wouldnt fall off of ledges so easily. That took some time.
He didnt care his dad had him taken care of. Besides, he claimed to have back problems. Whatever, thats still too long for me to play one game.
The longest Ive ever played straight was about 4 or 5 days when final fantasy vi came out. (III here in the states) I used to do that all the time when I was a kid. Anytime a new RPG would come out, I would not stop playing until I beat it. When FF anthology came out for ps1, I played through it again and it only took 35 hours to complete. I cant do those marathons now in my ripe old age, lol.
Mgs4 about killed me because I didnt want to put it down until I finished it, but I had to go to work the next day. I had some dazed shifts there for a few days lol

Crap, 4 to 5 days? Thanks for boosting my self esteem 😉
Dayyym.
It feels good and bad that gaming stats are more mainstream..
i remember looking at one of these last year.
some of the records in there make me wonder about society these days.
i remember watching the show, some of the sick stuff people would do just to get onto TV.
you could not pay me a billion dollars to eat a bulls testicle.
That's ridiculous!
You give me a billion dollars I'll eat the hell outta some bull testicles!
Live bulls?
I was a strange kid lol
Im sorry, no offence , but for a billion dollars, I would most certainly eat a bull testicle lol. Its considered a delacacy in certain parts of the world anyway lol
I ate one a few summers ago at a nearby town. They had a testicle festival. They were great when fried. Sorta chewy and the meat was black but I would compare the flavor and texture to fried clams.
thats exactly why they are called rocky mountain oysters. Bull testicles are very popular. I've never tried one myself but since LV has and he claims they are not bad, ill look in to it.
Just read a few pages of this on the official website. All I can say is…
WOW… What a bunch of BS.
Where was that, Dirkidurkistan?
Damn, 16,799 hours hours for Sara Lhadi???
That's one hell of a dedicated gal, but I have to wonder if she did it all without any help from friends or family.
I've done quite a few 24 to 36 hour marathons in the past, but after my 2 days off from work, I've always felt like a blind 3-legged wilderbeast chew toy at the alligator's annual social "Meet, Greet, & Eat" watering hole event, once I had returned to work.
Doesn't she even have a bf to get her attention? I wonder….
i wasnt gonna get this, but the fact it's $15 in america and £15 in englamd, there's even more reason NOT to buy it in england.
i guess I could get this for a good read when I'm bored.
OFF TOPIC
I finally Purchased flOwer, sooo, YAY me!
Congrats! It really is a great game and unlike anything before it. Glad to hear you're making use of the PSN.
I'm still on the fence, just one question, is there multi player (maily split screen)
Yeah I really want flower, but I decided to purchase Miltiary Madness. Its a really fun RTS on a console.
If anyone has it, does anyone know what to do to beat the Newton mission?
cool… have to get one of these books.
I hate when they put the best of 2009 or what ever year for a record, because its impossible to break that record. It must be just to fill up the pages.
Sara Lhadi
This chick can come up to any gamer and say:
"I OWNED YOU".
And none shall challenge her statement…..
**
On a side note: Can you guys even count to 2000????

I'll challenge her at any other game besides Runescape – cause if you're playing that for 9 hours a day then you don't have time for ANYTHING else.
It doesn't make you a gamer to play one game for 17,000 hours….it makes her a Runescape freak.
With your logic someone can log 10hrs a day of
Solitaire and come up and say they own me in gaming?
I think not.
Wow, finally someone lived out their dream!
I HOPE that wasn't her dream.
no seriously why were u downvoting limited when he was saying that titanic and wii are crap, they are really crap ………..
a million for a testicle . not a bad deal i'll eat both of them and arsehole as well any one wanna bet ???? 😉
You're too cute 🙂
You'd be surprised what I'd do for a grand.
I'll bet my time spent in the Starcraft/Broodwar world was world record material. Oh god the hours…
Didn't The Dark Knight beat out Titanic? I thought it did
