You know, creativity should be acknowledged and in some cases, rewarded. When it comes to something like LittleBigPlanet , those with fantastic imaginations can produce some very special content.
And this is why Media Molecule wants to show their appreciation for the fans who have worked hard to make LBP the haven of user-based creativity it truly is. Visit the PlayStation Blog and check out the "2009 Sackies," which are various awards that will likely be handed out on an annual basis (provided everyone keeps playing LBP, of course). They first handed out an award for "Best Visuals and Use of Special Effects in a Level," and have now moved on to stuff like "The Ever-Watching-Eye" award, "Best Innovative Creation," "Best Use of Story in a Level," "Best Gameplay in a Level," etc. And you should definitely vote for the coveted "Level of the Year;" check out the nominees they provide and choose your favorite! If you really thought that Media Molecule doesn't appreciate what the fans have done in the past year, you're crazy; being creators with big imaginations as well, they just love watching the fans make cool new stuff. What have you made in 2009? Perhaps you can utilize the new water feature to make even better stuff this year… Use that brain!
Oh, and Happy New Year to everyone if you didn't see my greeting in the Comments section of the Game of the Year Awards feature. News doesn't really exist for today and tomorrow until everyone goes back to work but don't worry, we're still here. 😉

This is why we love you Ben and EVERYONE else at PSX, even on new years day you guys bring info to us. Other sites just forget about us and go on vacation. Just wanted to thank you guys for that no matter how little the info is, it shows that you guys really care. Thanks and happy new years guys.
Working on new year's day. Wow. That's dedication. Of course when you love your work I guess it's not really "work."
Thanks for the article Ben, it reminded me that I still need to get this game.
agreed, thank you so much Ben. My other website of choice had been psu. com but they have not updated anything since the 23rd or 24th, so it is now official that this is the only gaming website I will ever visit. You guys are simply extremely dedicated to your work. I love it.
I kicked PSU to the curb awhile back too.
LoL World, I could just picture you doing that… Sit boo boo sit !

damn right, buncha gomers.
lol wow the sackies, its a great idea I must say
Still saving up for the GOTY edition PLUS the water pack expansion before I try to win some "Sackies"!
Ben, just a quick note.. I don't know if you managed to read all the comments posted with regards to your previous entry; i.e. "the PSXeXtreme Game Of The Year Awards", if you didn't would just like to say thank you for the "shout out" at then end of the Nominees list. I thought it would be decent to bring it to your attention that I had noticed my inclusion in that "shout out list" and that I appreciated that greatly!
Back on topic – I haven't played "LittleBigPlanet" that much; however these awards and the user generated content may ignite my enthusiasm for the title again… I know there are hours upon hours of free content to play through; however, cleverly Media Molecule require you to purchase level packs in order to access some of the user content; which indirectly, to make full use of the game, is a force DLC purchase every so often. I have yert purchase any additional level packs, and have rather used the extra funds for alternative full game products such as "Trine" and "Killzone2" DLC… who has followed suite, anyone; or have you gone on too expand LBP to the nth degree?

You deserve it. We may try to bring the users into PSXE even more in 2010…gotta think on a few ideas.
Just stick around. 🙂
The packs for LBP are ussally worth it! for instance the Pirates pack that just released gives you access to 5 new levels to play through and collect and a challenge. You also get a costume. I dont feel like its a force buy because with the initial release of the game you could still create an amazing level.
Your right though about taking full advantage of the game, you need to buy these packs. But you dont need them to have a greattime with LBP. Ive only purchased 2 creator packs, the pirates and MGS packs and they provide alot of extra content, but i honestly have yet to use it!
Thanks bigrailer19 for your informative answer. So basically, one could make decent use of this extra content if you really invest the time in doing something with packs; or just enjoying levels others make. Have you played MGS themed LBP levels yet? Are they any good?

Great stuff Ben 🙂

The MGS themed user levels are pretty creative. I would say some people have put the items you recieve from the creator MGS pack to good use. The MGS creatr pack levels are really good though. They are the levels that come with the purchase of the pack to collect through. You even get to fight MG REX at the end. And it comes with trophies, and you get a paint gun lol! Same goes for the pirates pack its really good also. But on the flip side i have yet to see the water be put to good use.
As i said if you want more levels to play and collect through they are good for that, if your not looking to create. And if you are looking to create there is still enough content out there with out purchasing them to create something amazing! These packs just give a lil' extra but definitely worth a purchase if you wanna create something new and fresh, what with the water and all in the new pirates pack.
Well, I may actually purchase that pack then and give it a try.
Honestly I have found it a little difficult getting into the game; mainly due to the inertia on the main Sack Boy character… he does fly about like a lazy sack of potatoes at best; so it can be tricky to get him to land where you want him too…
I always wanted the controls to be a little tighter… Do you feel similarly bigrailer19?

I kind of agree, yeah! When the sack boy is in the air it seems like a floating feeling to me! I dont have a big problem with the controls because there isnt a lot of button combinations and such. but i can relate to what your saying!
in the sense of being tighter though, yeah there is some room there to make things more accurate, as you mentioned jumping over gaps for instance.
Ben I gotta great idea, we need a 350Z each 🙂
I love it. PSXE will have more user-generated content than Little Big Planet.
It's important to note that you don't have to buy the level packs in order to enjoy the elements included in them (e.g., the paint gun, water) in the community levels. You can't build levels with those tools, but you can play them.
The only complaint I have about LBP DLC is that the costumes are too expensive. So, I don't buy them.
Hey Qubex, wait a sec. Could you elaborate a bit on Media Molecule making us buy DLC to access user content? I didn't understand that, and I'd really appreciate it if you'd explain please. This is the first time I've read about something like this.
Hi WolfC; no problem…
LBP is unique in that it is an "ever expanding game" in a sense; therefor to continually expand the game without MM having to constantly create new levels (for purchase and download), MM create "theme" packs which users can purchase, download and use the contents (within those packs) to create "user generated" levels; i.e. levels made by gamers for LBP players.
These levels are shared to other users of the community via the online facility available within the LBP game itself – as you probably know or have experienced already.
If a LBP user creates an entirely new level for the community to experience using the MGS (Metal Gear Solid) "theme" pack, in order to actually play those levels you have to have purchased, downloaded and installed that "theme" pack to your PS3 HDD.
This content is stored as part of the encrypted LBP "game data" contents that is made use of by the main LBP game engine. So if you have the MGS "theme" pack installed, the user generated levels will download and be playable to you after selection… if not you will not be able to play them. Therefore you have to purchase this DLC first and foremost to make use of all that "free" content.
Therefore the content is "free", in the form of the user levels generated from these "theme" packs; however the "theme" packs themselves must be purchased and installed first 🙂
If anyone would like to add to what I have written here, please feel free to do so 🙂

qubex-
Great explanation! You put it better than a lot of other people could have!
Thanks bigrailer19 🙂

Thanks for taking your time to explain, Qubex, but I've experienced the opposite of what you just said. I've always been able to play user-created levels even if I didn't buy any of the DLC. For instance, I've played some of Wexfordian's levels (great creator) that contained the Water pack, and I didn't purchase the DLC myself. Or did I misunderstand?
I was under the impression that non-buyers could play user created content using DLC tools, but they could not store any DLC stickers, tools, etc.
@wolfcrimson, and jaybiv-
you can still play the user created levels that include items from creator packs you do not own! But you canot save or collect any of those items because you have not yet purchased them! hope that helps!
yeah but qubex said you couldn't play those levels at all, like they were locked to you, they're not. you can still play any level no matter what. if someone makes a water level and you don't have the kit for it, you can still play that level, just not gain any kit only stuff.
Ok guys, I will check that out. I do remember a few weeks back I tried to play a level and it did not want to give me access to it. It could have been an online anomaly. I do remember the text popping saying I needed the pack for the shapes and stickers.
I will go back and try again. I have not had a chance to see the new water levels; but will go and see if I can find some 🙂

This is awesome! The industry is so great right now! LBP provides a lot of features, and to be rewarded for your creativity by the devs is awesome! There are some awesome levels out there and so many levels beyond imagination! Good Stuff!
Oh, Happy New Year to you too Ben, and everyone at PSXe 🙂
does anyone else think the sackies sound like a porn awards show? eh, maybe it's just me
I've seen that water, its really cool, I should be creating a new level with it soon. I already have 2 levels to my name and both don't even have plays above 100,wth?! One thing I hate, you put all your time and efforts into creating a level and in the end just a few people care and try it out, cause there are far more better ones out there keeping the majority busy.
Last edited by www on 1/1/2010 1:48:10 PM
Then shouldn't you create even better levels so that ppl play them?

hehe yeah I know I know, but that's the only way.
Great game, great idea for the awards. The level of creativity in the PS3 universe is amazing. I find myself sometimes shaking my head in disbelief when playing some of these incredible levels.

That last paragraph pretty much sums up why I visit psx on a daily basis. The last website I used to visit was psu. I didn't like how they rarely posted updates and when they did it would be some news that was a couple days old. Here at psx you guys update more than once a day and on weekends too(psu rarely does that) Hopefully someone from psu sees all the posts about why many of us love this website more than psu.
Anywho, thanks to everyone at psx for providing news/updates even when everyone else is out vocation/holidays.
PSX, you did another great job in 2009, & can't wait for more goodness from you all in 2010.
"Happy New Year to PSX, it's crew, & all you commenters, readers, & any other assorted critters out there too".
Eh I was mad that the Azure Palace wasn't on that list. One of the best levels yet.
I will try this Azure Palace. I have not seen the water effect yet, only on the PSN shorts hosted by the gorgeous Christina Lee.
Q!
"i am home"
The water is awsome, though it'd a biter harder to integrate well with carrying stuff, so I'm sure a lot of people will continue with jetpacks and blue backgrounds, haha. Azure Palace is one of those levels, it's all underwater but if it had the water they made, you wouldn't be able to do a lot of stuff sadly. I love lbp, haha
no thanks.
the only sack i want is the one im holding.
though i saw the GOTY edition of little big planet today for 50 bucks and a sackboy toy to go with it.
how could i resist?
little big planet is the best game to play with friends, even if they think your a 10 year old.
why are none of my levels in the sackies?
they're awesome I swear
happy new year to everyone btw 😀
