It remains one of the best racers of the generation and ever since its launch, Criterion Games has supported Burnout Paradise with a ton of additional downloadable content.
But perhaps it's time to move on. This developer is certainly capable of making an intense, adrenaline-pumping new racer, and maybe we should start looking for evidence of such a project in early 2010. We haven't heard anything about a new title from Criterion but their latest Twitter update may indicate the existence of a new IP. Either that, or they're preparing the next Burnout entry, which wouldn't be quite as intriguing but a good deal safer (established franchises are always safer from a business standpoint). If you don't feel like clicking through, here's the tweet:
"2010 will satisfy our increasing desire for travelling at a rate of high velocity….or words to that effect…"
Of course, that could mean just about anything, including more DLC for Paradise . But we'd like to think it's time to start hearing about something new; a project that just might rival their past efforts in terms of mind-bending speed and over-the-top crashes. If you haven't had the pleasure of racing through the streets of Paradise City, you can always log on to the PSN and grab the entire game for only $29.99. And the sheer amount of add-on content available has really allowed this title to become a sequel in and of itself, kinda like what Media Molecule has done in expanding LittleBigPlanet . But still, a new racer from Criterion would be sweet, right?
thats funny i just caught myself wondering when we'd see a new burnout just a couple of days ago.
Adding jets to Paradise are they?
I'd prefer a new Burnout. That was a mp good time.
Were they making the next need for speed game or involved in it? Whatever it is, its gonna be great .
Burnout is a huge franchise, there's no way they just "move on".
There has been just 1 BO game this gen. How many NFS have we had? 4? It's time for a new BO!

I didn't mean "move on" in a permanent sense; i.e., leaving Burnout behind forever.
The Burnout Paradise team does Need For Speed….
While they may not be in the racing simulator business like Polyphony, Criterion knows how to make an addictive racer, this game will be huge. The Criterion Team also does an excellent job with the PS3, so no worries about an inferior product here.
Stop saying BO, makes it sound like body odour
It's time for a new BO!
Oh well i only played Paradise and no other Burnouts so i don't know their life story
Yeah! BO this BO that… you think we're at Gamestop here??
You wouldn't like my acronym for "Starwars: The Force Unleashed"!
SW:TFU?
If i am not wrong, i think the were working with the next NFS.
Crash Mode, Crash Mode, Crash Mode! Please make a few hundred crash scenarios for me to play through. God, that stuff was addicting on the old games.
Loved Burnout. I can pop it in and burn a few hours easily just driving around goofing off. Definitely a top 5 PS3 game of all time!
It's not a Burnout game, Criterion is working on the next Need For Speed game, as has been reported here before…besides this is clear-ish…
" desire for travelling at a rate of high velocity….or words to that effect…"
Indeed it is. I could swear I saw an announcement somewhere earlier that the next NFS game will be developed by Criterion.
It's kind of too bad really. I don't like the NFS series. I suppose Criterion will do a great job, but I'm one to hold out for their real flagship series.
I remember that announcement. It's a little peculiar that EA would get Criterion to work on a NFS when Burnout is arguably the more popular and better game…..unless EA intends to fuse all their racing games under the NFS label, kinda like a NFS: Burnout.
They're clearly talking about the new Need For Speed. Last time I checked they were working on a new NFS and that was all that was said.
in a way i hope so, but the nfs series has always been a little closed circuit for me. wahat they should do is merge the free roaming and play-ability of burnout with a damn good story, one better than any nfs story.
you should have seen my face when i read the title, yesss a new racer from the devs that brought burnout, and epic racing game. as long as it is as good as burnout i dont mind. besides, along with this and Modnation racers, which frankly looks really cool (is media molecule making the mario of playstation, the plaforming, and now the cart racing??) and GT5, i'll be set.
oh and heavy rain and GOW3. and Brink. brink… wow!
can i just say, if its an IP, i reckon the word velocity will feature somewhere in the title/tag line, velocity is a very frequently unused word, speed is more common so why choose velocity?
velocity means speed in a certain direction, something to do with it if its an IP?

In case you (and other readers) really don't understand the terminology:
They're all IPs (Intellectual Properties): Burnout is an IP; Need For Speed is an IP; Gran Turismo is an IP; God Of War is an IP.
The term is in relation to copyrights.
What you meant to say was "a new IP".
I know many people were hoping for Criterion to develop a new Road Rage.
Also, in before ________ starts complaining about them not making a new Black.

to late.
they release a brilliant game, reviewers are kissing their feet, the public are kissing their feet, the game sells well and they dont release a sequel.
WTF?
its like they just turned down a 2 million dollar check.
i really can not see why they refuse to do a new black game, just like EA refuses to do another hot pursuit game.
they dont want my money?
one thing i would KILL! to see happen, is sony or whoever buy a development studio and their job is to do remakes of popular PS2 titles.
imagine black in its HD glory.
excuse me now while i go change.
i remember hearing word ea was pulling criterion from burnout so they could fix Need for Speed. itd be a damn shame, but it doesnt sound too out of character for a mongo-publisher.
i give it %75 for a new NFS, %25 for the next burnout.
I love the NfS Underground series. Hopefully its Underground 3 😀
bloody hell man is nobody seeing what i'm seeing?!! if read the tweet carefully the answer is right there!! "2010 will satisfy our increasing DESIRE FOR travelling at a rate of high VELOCITY….or words to that effect…"
= NEED FOR SPEED!!
and i know i read somewhere that EA appointed them to work on the arcade racer. can you imagine burnout meets need for speed!!! there'll be no better arcade racer
and then back to the realism of GT 5!!
Yep, I'm with you on this one.
hopefully EA and criterion have heard the demands of the fans and are FINALLY! going to release hot pursuit 3.
huh?
it was announced that criterion will be releasing the next need for speed game next year.
as far as i know there only a small development studio, far to small to be working on 2 games at once.
though a new burnout game would be kick a$$!, i love burnout paradise its just so much fun just to drive around doing jumps.
just do me a favor and make sure the game supports DTS this time, the first did than removed it in a patch and after the patch the game sounded no where near as good as it originally did.
patches are suppose to make the game better, not worse.
Maybe they're gonna name it……
"Need For Speed:Velocity" ?????
Hezzron, hahaha. I didn't see that until you mentioned it. And banaah, dope interpretation. And Ben, weren't you the one a few months ago that mentioned this?
aren't they working on the new NFS ?
