We're all excited for the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum , but there are two points of interest attached to this announcement.
Firstly, you may have noticed that the Eidos brand name was missing from that debut trailer that aired during the Spike TV Video Game Awards this past weekend. Well, according to Joystiq , that's because Eidos won't be involved in publishing Arkham Asylum 2 ; Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will handle the producing duties this time. And by the way, we still don't have the official title of this new game; we're all just calling it "Batman: Arkham Asylum 2" because we know it's a sequel. The second point of interest involves the possibility of this becoming a series, which was addressed in a recent PC Zone interview with Rocksteady Senior Gameplay Programmer Paull Denning. There, he said the idea has "almost run its course" and added:
"Gotham itself is a fantastically realized fictional city and there are so many places that would be probably be ideal for gameplay and great to explore."
Yeah, how long can you stay within the confines of the Asylum? No matter how skilled a developer you are, and no matter how imaginative you can be, the simple logistical restriction will quickly prove troublesome. In some ways, I'm a little surprised the Asylum is returning at all. But don't be expecting a GTA-style title in the far-off future; Denning says you have to be "careful" when doing something like that, and it may not happen. Fine by me; just give us another awesome title.
Gotham City will be the next title. I can see Infamous-like surroundings on the next one, like the first one had a Bioshock tone. Also, I want to see more allies in the next one. Nightwing, Robin, Selina Kyle, Cassandra Cain, Talia Al Ghul, maybe even Superman as a cameo?
Hopefully they'll keep Supes out of this series. Don't need this turning into Justice League.
For the love of all that's pure and sacred, no and I mean NO Robin!
"For the love of all that's pure and sacred, no and I mean NO Robin!"
Agreed. Though they can bring back the Jason Todd version so Joker can kill him again lol.
no i don't think we need robin or superman. that would ruin the grittiness of the game.
umm just incase u ddnt know night wing and robin were the same person
well jason todd was the second coming of robin.
people still have the wrong notion that Robin is some happy go lucky sidekick.
robin sucks. he needs to be no where near this game
I hope they put robin in and force you to play as him in some spot =D mwahahhahahahaha
Oh please don't make it into sand box.
I'm going to have to agree there. I know some people love their sandbox games, but they are not the be-all and end-all of gaming. The narrative in Arkham Asylum worked so well because it *wasn't* a sandbox game.
you have a picture of inFamous, and you don't want it to be a sand box game ? lol
Batman: Wayne Tower
I want to see more of Basil Karlo/Clayface. He was in the first one but wasn't used. Still trying to figure out why they used Preston Payne's mannequin though. It's like they combined two of the Clayfaces together.
I was a bit disappointed at the first game that Mr Freeze and Two-Face didn't make an appearance. I would also like to see Catwoman in the third one. Maybe they trying to spread all the best villians across all the future sequels.
I would've liked to see them too in the first one. Their empty cells were there though so obviously they had already escaped beforehand.
The whole point of Arkham Asylum is that Batman is bringing the last criminal into the Asylum and then trapped by Joker inside a madhouse with all his worst enemies. What are the big guys like Mr. Freeze and Two-Face doing "outside" the asylum?
Its a great game, just felt like the missing villians just made the first game not enough to quench my thirst for Batman. At the end of the day, it just doesn't feel complete.
@ godsman – As for Mr Freeze, he was locked up in a cell that was covered in ice when you took on Harley. Nowhere did it say ALL the inmates escaped. In fact, you might remember that Poison Ivy was not on the jokers "list" so was not to be let loose. That would have been the same for most major villains. The Riddler however WAS out of his cell and causing some very funny trouble from the outside.
I hope it doesn't come out every year like the COD series. If it does, it'll ruin the series. I say two years for any game is a good time frame.
i never did play this game….
you missed a really good game. very fun. very challenging. i would recommend renting it at least.
I'm definately getting the game, I'm just not paying full price – as I rarely do with *any* title. The moment it's at £17.99 at Play I'll get it.
On my christmas list, AA i.e,. . . Imma get the gold edition of RE5 next year. Can't say i'm looking forward to B2 since I haven't played the first one. . .
Hopefully with Eidos out of the way, we won;t have that nVidia nonsense that plagued the PC version.
I have an Nvidia card and never had any problems playing that game on my PC.
It wasn't Nvidia cards that were the problem, but the fact that Anti Aliasing was locked out on ATI cards, and unlocked by hackers, it was there, just deactivated. (not to mention the lockout of PhysX with an ATI card present, but that was for all PhysX titles not just Batman AA)
This is a World exclusive thumbs down test.
Is this some kind of test tease? If so, do we need a sack to hold em'?
I just realized you could double my name and get the word I was implying 'testes'.

I noticed even if I say something that couldn't possibly be disagreed with people are hunting me with their thumbs. I want to know how many enemies are out there.
Really? That's a shame. I think you're one of the more reasonable voices on this site.
At first though, I thought you were implying that an AA sequel is a thumbs down. Which is a thumbs down-able offense in my eyes.
World I noticed it also. I think it's people who are lacking what I joked about ' test tease'. Some didn't grow any so they won't engage in a discussion with you.
I gave you a thumbs down because it obviously brings more attention to me and makes me a known person for giving someone a bad score =D mwahahahaha
Damn. I thought you were timing my reflexes.
World,
Oh crap,
I only thumbed ya down cause I thought you wanted to make sure your "down' button was in a well-oiled working order…….
"My bad"
@ LegendaryWolfeh – You made me LOL.
@ WorldEnds – Maybe they're just mad that you have a katana and they've got plastic lightsabers.
I had it before on one post…but they wont give you a reason why they done it (N)
Well im sure they'll come up with something simple like the Joker closing off half of Gotham locking all civilians behind guarded gates and walls so they can keep the tight feel and have you dodging in and out of iconic Gotham locales ^_^
It'd be very interesting to see how they re-use the Arkham Asylum with some creepier villains and adress some of the issues with the boss fights being not sooo… boss fighty ^_^
Gotta purchase the first. Love the idea of approaching a situation carefully and intelligently. You can't just barge in a take out the gunners with fists and an infinite supply of batarangs. LOL
if theres one game released this year that deserves.
no needs a sequel its batman AA.
but i hope they sorta mix the gameplay and enviroment a little.
maybe experimenting like this would be a bad idea, but done well it could work out really well.
kinda like a GTA open world esc game, meets batman AA, meets batman begins.
i really liked the last batman game on PS2, the gadgets were really cool and fun to use, the toying with your enemies playing cat and mouse.
classic!
take the combat system out of batman AA, through it into a open world environment and tie the gadgets and gameplay mechanics of batman begins and you got the perfect batman game.
