Scivelation Story, Setting Details

Not much has been seen concerning TopWare Interactive's promising shooter, Scivelation , and it's not scheduled to release until Q3 2010. But at least we can get some environmental and story details.

The studio's managing director, James Seaman, spoke with Joystiq and explained what to expect from the game's setting and backdrops. He also tells us how to pronounce the name – "sigh-vuh-lay-shun" – and that it's a combination of two words: science and revelation. Basically, you'll be looking at a post-apocalyptic world that was partly inspired by the likes of Phillip K. Dick and Robert Heinlein, and the interesting contrast is that although there is societal breakdown, "humanity has reached the pinnacle of technological advancements." Said Seaman:

"Most games set in a post-Apocalyptic setting often portray the world with a level of degradation. Be it a nuclear holocaust, zombie apocalypse, or environmental catastrophe, these games place humanity in a state of technological and societal decline. Though Scivelation deals with issues of societal breakdown and the world in chaos, humanity has reached the pinnacle of technological advancements. This combination of science fiction and a dystopian society comes from our great love of many classic literary works. We have striven intensely to pay homage to Orwell, Milton, and Dante as well as the Science Fiction genius of Robert A. Heinlein and Phillip Kindred Dick. These two genres work in tandem to help us create a perfect backdrop for our story."

Okay, so now we're intrigued by the concept and all we need to see now are some in-game screenshots and perhaps a video or two. I'm well aware that we don't have a lot of shooter fans around here, but if done correctly and with an interesting twist on the standard formula, such ideas can really shine. We'll have to keep an eye on Scivelation as 2010 progresses.

Well ya know I am a shooter fan, I just prefer that we aren't so saturated with them you know? As if a gamer can't do anything but point and pull a trigger.

That said, the concept behind this is rather intriguing. Anyone who wants to include a backdrop of literature in their production gets my interest. Looking forward to those pics and videos should they pop up.

I agree World ends.. This could well make up for there being no PS3 version of the epic looking Metro 33 next year(which is one 360/PC game I will be preordering based on what I've seen of the game and know of the book which I'm desperately waiting to get translated properly)-we could use a more thoughtful backdrop for the shooty, shooty stuff, no?

On PS3 you do have a LOT of shooters representing the gamut of FPS life from the arcadey(COD and Resistance)to the more demanding and tense(Killzone2, Operation Flashpoint)and everything inbetween but nothing thought provoking as yet which makes this look very interesting to me at least.

Something like the world of Stars Wars/Mass Effect could've been better but this doesn't even look interesting

Hmmm only a few comments. No love for Scivelation? There really isn't much info on it, so I guess I'm having trouble getting interested.

one thing ive been wanting in my shooters is some environmental hazards.
FEAR2 kind of had it, slightly where you need to use your environment to your advantage.
like shoot out the lights, than turn on NV so your enemies cant see you.
or a enemy is standing below a lamp so shoot said lamp and it crushes your enemy.
and make your enemies do the same thing, that way you cant sit behind cover pop and shoot all day.
make me think twice before i take cover next to that flammable barrel.
spice things up a bit, most shooters are sit behind cover pop and shoot than change cover when grenade is tossed.
thats about it, rinse and repeat, i need something new.
FEAR2 and rouge warrior are the 2 titles that sling to mind, they kind of did that but not to the extent i would like to see.

Well, if it's a 360 exclusive, I don't think I'll waste my time getting interested in it.

Isn't the backdrop to this pretty similar to most other post-apocalyptic based things? Or am I missing the point here?

And other than the name, the game doesn't sound too interesting at this point in time. Of course, that's just atm.
