You know, we're starting to really like EA CEO John Riccitiello. The more he talks, the more he sounds like a "gamer's executive."
In a recent Kotaku interview , Riccitiello talks about his company's firm resolve to stick to their "innovation and originality" goal. He also addresses the possibility of Mirror's Edge 2 and explains how the first title presented developers with the appropriate foundation, but there are any number of directions they could go in the sequel. Riccitiello calls Mirror's Edge a "massively innovative product" and one that absolutely "deserves to come back," but hey, when you produce something unique, it doesn't always fly off the charts. The CEO makes a very good point by saying that innovation doesn't always completely succeed the first time; "if it did, everyone would do it." And while he wouldn't confirm the sequel was in the works at DICE, he did have further comments on the quality of the first game:
"I think Mirror's Edge was a fascinatingly original world. Fascinatingly original art direction. Music and sound design was great. I think the gameplay mechanic was a blast, but was intermittent and the levels didn't work. You found yourself scratching at walls at times, looking for what to do. Sometimes you had a roll going, downhill, slide, jump, slide, jump and then you just got stopped. It sort of got in the way of the fun.
It was like we couldn't quite decide if we were building Portal or a runner. And I don't think the consumer was ready to switch it up quite that way. You could say it was a sharp and great innovation. I believe that it was. You have to figure out what to do from here if you want it to be a five million seller vs. a one-million unit seller."
Riccitiello goes on to say that they could go in two very different directions. Maybe they could go the more traditional route; "it's a first-person game" and "there are a lot of successful FPS products out there that do really well." Yeah, that's one option. On the other hand, you could say, "this was never about guns…it was about stark originality," and we should stick to that. He said both ways were valid but it's really up to the developers. Well, if we ever do hear about Mirror's Edge 2 , we'll be plenty enthusiastic.
This sotry got me really exicted. if they improved on the faults of ME1 that would be great. One major complaint was the ridiculousless ness of time trials and speed runs. the checkpoiting system was awful, and if you feel off the edge, oh dear, would you have hell to pay. one mistake would always cost you the race.
have a look at this, it has great ideas for how ME could be improved.

Forget this! Give us Dead Space!
Right on!
give us both!
Ummmm… Dead Space 2 has already been confirmed, i agree with you Godslim
It's not that I don't like Mirror's Edge, it's just that I'm kind of the "Dead Space Guy," what with the avatar. I had to chime in!
Yes, why can't they give us both? Why does it always have to be one or the other with some of you?
Because both would cost a hundred bux when all I want is Dead Space. Why does it always have to be both with some people?
I think it would have worked better, for me, in a third person view. The FPS direction with a platformer was really interesting at first, but made everything alot more difficult to control since you couldn't actually see like you would in real life. And with a game full of quick decisions and reactions, that is very important.
"Mirror's Edge 2:Third Person"…. If they make it third person, you have taken away whatever is special about the game, first person platformer.
I agree with you, the reason i didnt get the game is because the demo made me dizzy just jumping around.
not saying they have to make it third person, but they really need to figure out how to make the FPS aspect work well with such fast gameplay if they want it to do well.
I didn't buy the game, because the demo was petty fun, but i couldn't see what I was doing half the time.
The first person vantage point makes the game more difficult for sure. I would prefer a third person view for the running/jumping/climbing and a first (or third) person view for shooting/fighting.
Lol, I had to lol at that, 'couldn't see like you could in real life', so what, in real life we're actually all in third person? haha
@Legendarywhatever Nice one, you really got me there.
sarcasm
we dont see in third person, but with a third person view you get everythng you COULD see and more, I'd take extra over limitation any day

Hmmm…. he's probably right about picking a direction, however it never hurts to blend things. I couldn't help thinking about how the game play in Uncharted and Uncharted 2 shares some common elements. In particular in Uncharted 2 Drake is constantly running around rooftops in Nepal at the same time taking on bad guys with fists, guns and whatever works. OK, it's third person and Mirror's Edge is first person, even so there are similar elements to the gameplay.
While having a focus is good, the blend of platforming, running and shooting clearly works well for Drake, I don't see why it wouldn't continue to work for Mirror's Edge.
Onegai Teacher FTW!
You know it baby!
How can anyone not like Onegai Teacher? Mizuho Kazami FTW!

Man if I was that kid I woulda gone after her from the word go. Standstills would be cured, no problem.
I liked the first person perspective, it made it hard, but you can also view is as "challenging".
…or "broken".
First-person platforming is just a bad idea. It was a bad idea in Half-Life; it's a bad idea in Mirror's Edge; it'll be a bad idea in ME2.
Admittedly, DICE did what they could with that idea, and I applaud them for trying something different, but it's still not a good idea.
Hopefully, some of the advancements in First-person presentation which DICE created for ME will be adopted by more standard FPS games, to help eliminate the clunky limitations of that view in those games (what I call the Dalek effect).

what a stupid comment.
I do not want my hand held through games, that's one major reason this gens games pail in comparison to last gen.
I like LEARNING a brand new experience.
You learn Mirrors Edge and then you can do your uninterrupted run through a level!
Who could forget a moment say, in Demon's Souls when your just thrown into battle with one giant flame creature with no hints and is relentless? Knowing your last checkpoint is quite far off. It's genius and makes things more memorable because you spend much more time on it, learning it.
Mirrors Edge was fresh and new and he's right about the reactions to that. I'm also glad he's still giving Dice the freedom to make the choice but, he should be encouraging them to stay completely original and make western games look good again.
The only things bringing Mirrors Edge down was length and cheesy US voice acting.
If Mirrors Edge 2 dumbs down….i dunno….im just gonna lose a lot more FAITH in this industry.
More Demon's Souls, less MW2!

another FP game, boring, I agree fully– less FP games, more Demon's Souls, please.
pls dont innovate the good old gaming world into sth much worse, i fear this is the trend.

Hopefully more games that offer fresh gameplay (not just rehashed) will be coming out in 2010; I'm just hoping some of them won't just be rpgs.
I'm excited for this and hopefully in the future there's gonna be a Platforming FPS.
Riccitiello also said that he sees Physical Media gone, or mostly gone, during the course of 2010.
Really great man, as he's said a lot of great things :), but I really have no clue where the idea of this came from when he said this.
ME had great style and setting, but the controls we're a bit unintuitive and some gameplay elements were overly frustrating.
How about a jazzed up, urban Prince Of Persia-type game with some guns thrown in for good measure?
We have that, it's called Uncharted 😛
Mirrors Edge was visually striking and uber challenging. Like the game but making it more fluid woulnt hurt it, thrid person would kill it, then it would just be PoP by DICE.
Never played the game. I heard it was short but fun, and needed some tweaking in terms of the gameplay. I just want to know if it's worth checking out or should I wait for the sequel?

"How about a jazzed up, urban Prince Of Persia-type game with some guns thrown in for good measure?" u need uncharted (if u havent played it yet)
ME was cool actually i played it on my Pc so no complaints about the controls i hate playing FPS on a console with the exceptions of killzone 2 that was awesome but i believe DICE should stick to the original idea of course they can always improve a lot of stuff and put some more stuff to make it an interesting sequel that said ME was both new and special
one of the bests western games i played
SWEET!
just change 1 thing.
in mirrors edge, the whole point is to run your ass off and get buy the cops without fighting them.
so why am i forced to fight them?
prime example the car park, you have such a long sprint from the van to the door you cant just run otherwise you will die.
you have no choice but to kill a cop and take out a few of his friends so they cant shoot you.
thats just defeating the purpose of the game.
i like the idea of just running your a$$ off, but dont put us into situations where we cant do it.
you have to do this, but you cant do it because if you do you will die.
WTF?
mirrors edge needed to be a wide open game so you can run around and behind the cops so they cant shoot you, but some of the levels did not allow you to do that.
some of the levels forced you to run straight past them.
if your running right in front of cops shooting you,it does not take a brain surgeon to come to the conclusion that your going to die.
If they make it a first person shooter it will be thrown in with the many other FPS, and if you want a third person free running game by Assassin's Creed 2. The first person aspect was good but to make it more fluid all they have to do is make the entire next platform that you need to jump on turn red every single time maybe even put in an arrow pointing in the right direction. But in real life when free running you aren't going to do the same thing every time you hit an obstacle add more variety Last but not least why did it make everyone dizzy i never got dizzy playing it

I was really disappointed with the first one. And I really agree with what they said. The games platforming was pretty poor. There was always one very specific path that you could fallow, and the game's world never opened up.
I would like to see the sequel focus more on platforming, and less on getting helplessly shot in the back.

I would be sad to see ME2 turn into a fps. It was never about the shooting in the 1st game… They didnt even tell u how much ammo u had left wen u stole a gun…
