While the idea of third-party exclusive titles is nearly extinct this generation, it has become abundantly clear that games exclusive to the PlayStation 3 hold the edge in terms of overall quality and pushing the envelope; in gaining a new technical foothold in this era.
It has all happened quite recently, although early examples ( Heavenly Sword , Warhawk , Uncharted: Drake's Fortune , etc.) have given us glimpses of what developers could do if they focused entirely on the PS3's ultra-competent hardware. However, it's no easy feat to produce a blockbuster exclusive that manages to be lucrative. First of all, you're eliminating…what, about 55-60% of potential sales by cutting out the Xbox 360? Secondly, these projects often suck up a tremendous amount of cash and it can be awfully risky for the designers. Thirdly and lastly, with the competition becoming stiffer and stiffer with every passing month (or so it seems, anyway), you really have to produce something pretty damn spectacular to make a big splash. Despite all these risks, though, the likes of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , inFamous , Killzone 2 , and the spectacular Uncharted 2: Among Thieves have been extremely successful and have proved the PS3's unrivaled – and heretofore untapped – capability.
Furthermore, it's hardly a stretch to believe future exclusives like Gran Turismo 5 , God of War III and Heavy Rain will be gigantic hits, and will likely act as more measuring sticks and benchmarks for the generation. Developers for the games I've listed here have often said they simply couldn't make such productions for other platforms (Naughty Dog has said Uncharted 2 would have to be "a very different game" on the 360). If you factor all this in, might developers, even third-party developers, look at this success and realize they can make their mark with the PS3? It's risky, yes, but look at the respect designers like Naughty Dog and Guerrilla get; look at how the critics and gamers everywhere receive their efforts. At the same time, we've seen multiple reports from developers who say the 360 has long since been maxed out, which means we've already seen just about everything that console is capable of. Gears of War 3 is a guaranteed bad-ass game, but I'll say without any reservation whatsoever that four of the five most impressive titles I've played this generation are PS3 exclusives. I doubt I'm the only one.
Obviously, exclusives seem to be great for every platform, and that's just logical. Give a developer time to focus entirely on any console, and it's more than likely the team will produce something better than if they were forced to make the game for multiple systems. But given the potential of the PS3, much of which has been clearly utilized in the past few years, it seems inevitable that more devs might want to take a shot at a PS3 exclusive. I dunno…just a train of thought followed through to what I'd like to think is a common sense conclusion.
MS kicks puppies and eats babies, too.
I certainly hope so. I'm tired of multiplats. Some devs can do them right but most don't. I'm sick of a majority of the games on the market looking like greesy xbox games.
Yeah Jawknee we'll be happy. An exclusive would be of better quality but the game will still be good. As long as it's not a port. Those are truly inferior.
Happy late Thanksgiving, guys at PSXExtreme!
Third party exclusives should be made for the Xbox 360 first, then make the same game even better for the PS3 second. If they did the work this way we wouldn't be seeing anymore inferior games and would all be happy. I rather wait for a well produced game then not have a game finished to it's full potential. Another Topic…….My last PS3 died after finishing Batman Arkham Asylum. I GOT MY SECOND PS3 ON AMAZON TONIGHT! I took advantage of the great bundle(Killzone 2 & Infamous)they were offering and picked it up for $289 with no tax! BLACK FRIDAY IS AWESOME! I have to buy Uncharted Drake's Fortune now!……Happy Late Thanksgiving Everyone!
In this gen, multiplats are either superior on the 360 or equal, no multiplat has ever been superior on the PS3.
Weird eh?
Considering that in the 6th gen, there's quite a number of multiplats that's clearly superior on the Xbox, so developers are too shy to even make a superior version of multiplats on the PS3? Even though they clearly can pull it off with the huge difference between DVD and Blu Ray?

I know people that say they dont like the PS3 controller as thier hands are mssive and the 360 one fits it just fine. They say they do like the PS3 and will consider getting one for the exclusives they cant get on the 360. Uncharted 2 was the game my mate said he wanted to play, so he said he would have to put up with the controller. It is just a matter of getting used to the controller.
It is the same on both sides it takes getting used to a controller is all, especially as your more used to one than the other.
As Ben said there are about 4 out of 5 games that are great but they were on the PS3 this year, the 360 had 1 maybe 2 depends on your take on the game(s).
Infamous 2 and 3 anyone ? Uncharted 3 lets hope so. 🙂

With the PS3 selling better because of the price cut and introduction of the slim, I think you might see a couple of Xbox/PC exclusives going multi-plat in the next few years, but that's about it. When it comes to potential profits vs. putting out a superior game, the publishers will go with the profits almost every time. Hell, some of these dev's can't make a smooth running PS3 game in the first place.
R* is coming around. "Agent" anyone?
I gave up comparing it to 360 exclusives. Sorry, but the PS3 has the "edge" over the 360's games. With exclusives utilizing the blu-ray not to mention the "high" production values and the delays to polish the game as high as they could only to be exceeded with another sequel (hence Uncharted 2).
All of this for the very same price for a 360 exclusive. Sorry, Alan Wake and Splinter Cell: Conviction are the only games on the 360 that truly interests me and even IT may be published on PC.
I believe each "exclusive" the PS3 releases is a stab to the "nay-sayers" heart.

PS3 exclusives do give you more bang for you buck.
ummm Snaaaake, Batman: Arkam Asylum wasis better on the PS3, w| the ability to play as the Joker in challenge rooms.
Were talking better like uncharted better. Or even better in how most multiplats are have an edge on the 360. Additional content is nice but doesn't really apply. I'd rather have a larger and ps3 exclusive quality games then additional add ons. Batman AA was largely the same game without the content.
From their stand point I don't see why they would want to limit themselves to one platform; specially the one that exclusives sell less in.
Yeah, God of War III will definatly lose money. Oh, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII…right…
@ Snaaaake:
I agree to a certain extent. Batman AA is the only exception I've come across where the PS3 version was better than the 360 version. I have both copies and played them side by side on the exact same TVs. (32 hd lcd). The Ps3 version does look better than the 360 when it comes to textures. The 360 version looks more plastic and maybe this is just me but the PS3 version responds slightly better. (and the 360 Batman looks more blue and PS3 Batman is more black)Granted it is not a HUGE step up from the 360 version, but it definently is a sign of things to come. PLUS, we get exclusive DLC (on more than one occasion!) PS3 for LIFE! (Here's lookin at you cross game chat *crosses fingers*)
Please insert nail in 360's coffin and lay it next to the Wii so that we may bury them at the same time.
PS3 is working with dedicated companies and I think the final products are finally starting to show now that they are understanding the hardware. I was very hesitant to see the future for PS3 last year and now that their are games like Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 out, I am excited to see the games they can come up with. The only thing going for Xbox right now is Mass Effect 2 and after that, the creativity for their games have just been falling ever so slowly downward with the increase of casual gamers. This is definitely going to be the better investment down the road.
yeah every year I hear the same thing… just because you're one sided doesn't mean everyone else is… yeah Mass Effect 2 is it… let's forget about Alan Wake and Splinter Cell Conviction and those are in the first few months and that's not even taking into consideration that the new halo game is using a new engine that uses the newer APIs from Microsoft. Then you have 3rd party games they'll do better like Bioshock 2 and the next CoD. For all the big games and the huge success that the Slim has been it's only made a slight dent in Microsoft's lead and Sony continues to bleed money.
Way to troll, Cueil!
I agree with Moochie, though Mass Effect 2 isn't even appealing to me. Only thing that appeals to me is the Fable series and 'exclusive' titles that are going to the PS3 or already have.
Money talks so probably not, not yet anyway.
It must frustrate developers that are being held back by multi-platform requirements when they see how a PS3 exclusive can bring the original creators vision of a game far closer to realisation.
as long as you pump 2 million into your best exclusive and then double that for your biggest 3rd party games it's not going to happen
Ya know, I was playing the PS1 version of Soul Reaver that I downloaded of the PSN and remembering that I used to own the Dreamcast version. It looked so much better for Dreamcast (obviously because of the huge hardware gap) and I'm just wondering why developers don't do this today. Just make the best version of the game for the most powerful console and dumb it down for the rest. Can't be that hard……can it?
Seeing how well games like cod:mw2 plays and looks I don't understand why you guys are so concerned about a game being exclusive or not…
Other than the brag rights it's pretty apparent to me that a cross platform game can be just as good, or better than a platform exclusive.
Not a PS3 exclusive…..if done right.

Modern Warfare 2 looks like a Nintendo 64 game. the damage done by bullets looks like small gif images upsized too much and the bullet holes go away after a while, too. I played that game with 4 people for a while, and I had flashbacks of Goldeneye 007 from the Nintendo 64 come back…because it looked and felt like it. Like a games from 2 generations ago. The best look of that game were the guns, but that's because they were shiny. All FPS games are the same in this aspect, they seem like they're all built upon the same engine. A very outdated engine.
