Naughty Dog hates quitters. They just didn't like the fact that players could leave online matches in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and not have to suffer any consequences.
Therefore, they implemented a new – and very strict – rule in order to deal with the problem: if you quit, you'll be fined $40,000. Now, you do get one free pass so feel free to drop the match in frustration when you first start playing. But every time after that, it's gonna cost you and a lot of gamers are none too happy about this policy, which unfortunately doesn't work to 100% functionality. The problem is, if you suddenly lose your Internet connection, or the power goes out, or the console freezes up, or whatever , it will be treated as a "quit," and you'll lose $40k. Obviously, this has caused a few irate gamers to speak up but according to Examiner , Naughty Dog ain't budging on their stance. Said Arne Meyer:
"Currently we’re confident we’ve made the right decision regarding penalties for leaving the match—remember you don’t get docked any cash for the FIRST time. We’re keeping a close eye on in-game stats and forums and we will make adjustments if and when we feel they are warranted."
Well, at least they're keeping an eye on things and if you make a big enough stink about it, they might return your lost money. They're also not ignoring the complaints; they're simply standing by their decision and there will be no backing out. So what do you say? Too strict? Or is this the best way to deal with the quitters who can have negative effects on a match?

It is about time there was real penalties in an online game for dropping out of a match before it is done. Bravo.
Sucks for people with crap connections, but again, if your connection sucks, online gaming is a pipedream in any form.
it doesnt take that much work to get nat 2. guides are even online. If you know this info and not do anything about it then you deserve the penalty. Dont screw up my gaming experience because you're too lazy to do it right. This is not aimed at you by the way.
Maybe the ND devs were playing online and were getting shafted by cheaters so they became jaded and put this rule in place.
I really wish they would start doing this in Modern Warfare 2. There is not much that I hate more than having the entire enemy team quit just because they are not winning.
I quit matches all the time if I am lagging bad.
I am not going to sit there through an unenjoyable experience.
I couldn't agree more BTN I was just telling my friends on MW2 about this last night, I wish IW wasnt so biased towards M$ because if they weren't they would probably at least consider something like this. I hate quitters

That's a problem in most online multi-player team based games. I'm not sure that there is a good solution except profiling user quit patterns and penalizing people based on their actions and pattern.
LOL! This should be in MW2!!! 3X it has happened where the host is gettin whooped bails and Right In The Middle of my predator missile strike. What happens? After you connect to a different host it's like the stike never existed!!!
Also, once when it was changing hosts I was wrecking mid-game 26 kills it reconnected with me having zero!!! I was the only person that it chose pick on, btw!
Shouldn't there be a simple way to differentiate between a network error and someone simply choosing the "quit" option?
…I guess a player could just turn off the console or exit the game entirely and it would probably register the same as a network error would.
Hmm…
-Arvis
Or pull the plug from the modem to the Router, lag switch style. It's been tried in many games, but gives the cheaters a really easy way to create lag for their own benefit.
Not really. I know people who simply turn off their PS3 or quit the game to XMB which would cause a network time-out that could look like a network failure.
…. and I just read the second part of your comment. Nevermind.

I've suffered from this punishment already, since then I never went back, I was busy beating the campaign on Hard and am done now. With Multiplayer, I think Fifa 10 and MW2 already got my hands full.

Kudos for Naughty Dog in sticking with their decision. The "irate fans" are almost always the cheaters who want to rank up fast, or who want to have great k/d ratios for bragging rights.
I wish more games would do this. Also, I wish there was a way for a server to detect people using glitching techniques or switches to help them cheat. Soooo annoying!
Speaking as an irate gamer who got penalized, I have to disagree completely because I am neither a cheater nor someone who has ranked up quickly. My 'sin' was to have the game glitch on me and lock up leaving no alternative but quitting. Of course that was when you got the penalty even on your very first 'quit'. But, it's not much fun to lose your rank and score because of a game or network glitch. It's all very well to be righteous about cheaters, but NG are being too draconian. At least a 3 strikes and your out policy would allow a small number of software or network glitch quits before a penalty occurs. If someone is cheating, they'll quit a darn sight more than three times.
wouldnt naughty dog have information on whole games glitching? If they dont then they should so that honest people wont get penalized. I was wondering if this counts the people who team kill too much and automatically get kicked out.
I like the idea in theory. Quitters are the worst, especially in a game like MW2 where an entire team can bounce and leave one guy against six others. Not fun!
Perhaps this is the beginning of a system that will analyze players quitting habits over a period of time to determine who the quitters really are so adequate punishment can be laid down on them.
it is pretty fun when it becomes me against 6 people. i just bring out my lmg, cold blooded perk, scavenger, and ninja.
I love the idea, but since Uncharted 2 runs a Peer 2 Peer server system, I don't know if I stand behind that idea or not.
They need to at least have a three strikes and you're out policy, or use their servers to determine if someone quits regularly before imposing a penalty.
where not talking real money right? that would be bullshit. i havent played the game and dont plan to.
Hahaha, you just made my day. Keep it Real!
Shame on you.
I've already been fined the 40 grand, and I think it sucks. In the middle of a game, I had to go help my daughter with something. Life happens. And plenty of things in life will enterfere with you trying to play a video game. I don't know about anyone else, but it takes me a decent amount of time to rack up $40,000.
Loosing $40,000 after it took you an hour or more to earn it, especially if you only play a couple hours a week, will make you seriously reconsider whether or not you want to bother playing a game any more.
Agreed. I had the game lock up and all I could do was use the menu to quit, none of the controls would work and the game session itself was frozen. I got the penalty and was irate. Still ticked about it.
True, that 40,000 is too much!
How do you know if you have been docked the $40,000? Does it alert you the next time you log in that you have been docked, or do you guys keep an eagle eye on how much you have earned, and you know right away you have been docked?
I play it quite a bit, but to be honest, I would not notice being docked money unless I was alerted to the fact.
I have dropped out a few times. Never in the middle of a game, but when it is setting up the game, and it is looking for players, or just loading settings before the match begins, and like Troy, I have kids, and I have had to quit the game to attend to them.
Do you get docked only if you are in the middle of a game, or how about you have to bow out even before guns are drawn so to speak?

@MWN
Yeah, you get a notification the next time you go into Multi-player.
I am having some problems with this game online sometimes when the game start i cant move the character, it freeze up and i can do anything. i see the others players moving and they can kill me but i cant do anything. Sometimes i get a connection error message or sometimes i have to quit. I get the 40,000 penalty because of a glitch with the game and on top of that i cant rank up, that is frustrating. I have checked my connection, i have deleted the update data and installed again but its the same. Any body else having this problem?
By the way I can play MW2 and KZ2 with no problems online.
So they have to reconsider this penalty system its taking me out of the game!

MW 2 needs to start banning quitters. Since I got it I have never had a full 6 on 6. People always leave right after the match starts. Its a peal pain. It may seem really harsh but with the way some idiots are on MW 2 I think it is necessary. They'll just keep doing it without a care.
I check the connection when the match starts, if it's a red bar, why the hell would i stay?
I don't think this is fool proof, I've seen people kill their teammates until they get kicked. This just irritates me more.
The problem is the dorks that don't revive team mates. I played with one the other night, after being left hanging around for 10 minutes twice in the same game, I got annoyed enough to start taking potshots. Yes, I know I was left hanging, the dork was within a hands reach of me but made no attempt to revive me and was level 20-odd, so there's no way he didn't know how to revive.
Next time maybe I will take a potshot at someone who does that, or accidentally toss a grenade when they're standing next to a bad guy….oopsie.
It's too strict because it doesn't grant any grace in the case of a network or game failure. I've had the game lock up in a multi-player session and all I could do was quit. It's the one and only time I have ever quit, and I got a penalty for it.
If you're going to impose a painful penalty, then you must take some measures to ensure you're not hurting gamers who have done no wrong, because those are the gamers who will get annoyed and not come back. NG seems awfully righteous and pious about this, but not very considerate.
What about leaving a matchmaking game to answer to a friend's invite? I don't like to make them wait for me if I can avoid it.

Guess I'll be staying out of the online part, o well. Maybe they should have left it off the game if they are gonna be like that.

I think it also deducts a level from you. Or maybe I was less then 40k into my next level and that's why it was deducted?
I agree with high, they should if they can figure out away to make the system recognize freeze ups. I do like the idea in general though. I've never had any lagging issues online with U2. I really do hate it when people start to quit the match. If too many quit the match ends or were stuck with uneven teams.
I've noticed a great majority leave because they suck. They take off halfway into the match, and when I look at their score they don't have any kills and massive deaths. THOSE people should be punished. Not people like High who have had freeze ups in the past.
I've been thinking, and they should really keep the penalties but renew your 1 quit every month or so.
Yeah, or at least once a week. My router often has to be resetted to respond, and this happens like once a week for me.
Not to mention, if you are using the WiFi in the PS3, that is decidedly less reliable than a hard wired LAN connection. That could be the cause of a lot of dropped connections for users.

@MWN
Wireless routers are definitely responsible for a lot of the lag on network connections, it wouldn't surprise me if they were also the cause for a lot of drops.
I don't think it's the ps3's wireless internet adapter, because every time I lose connection, I lose it on my ps3 as well as my laptop.
im the other way around.
i spent 300 bucks on a high end wireless N router and ever since my internet on my iphone or laptop or my fathers laptop never drops out.
my ps3 on the other hand.
at least once every hour or so.
reason why i dont bother playing online anymore.
do you have media server connection activated, cause for some reason that causes the ps3 to drop on some wireless routers. I used to have the same problem and disabling the media server connection fixed it. eventually I moved and got a new router and it didn't do it anymore.

yea ive got it disabled same with the information bar for some reason that can cause problems too.
Sweet! 🙂
Capcom should do this with SFIV
Yeah but what about the genuine people who do freeze or lose the net connection. It's only virtual $40,000 anyway so who cares lol.
I can see people moving away from playing online with games that do this and play something else.
They should give one free quit a week instead of one free quit for life. That way people with crap connections arent permanently screwed over but it still punishes the constant quitters.

I like it, and yes I've disconnected, magical in-game money isnt a big deal to me, its not like its my livelyhood
Seems like a decent idea in theory but as alot of you have said it will punish many people who just happen to have bad connections or game freezes. I suck at online shooters but don't like to quit rounds even when im getting destroyed (often).
Why would a player quit an online match? Is it because they suck or something?
I don't know because I don't have the game.
