Sony Maintains 13 Million Worldwide PS3 Sales Goal

Even during the difficult times, Sony's sales projections for the PlayStation 3 were never that far off. Perhaps it's because they had the foresight we never did; for instance, they knew they were dropping the price of the console long before anyone else.

And although it seems more likely now, Sony did predict they would sell their goal of 13 million PS3 consoles worldwide this fiscal year. The recent success has only made them more confident in this claim; according to Gamasutra , Sony executive vice president Kaz Hirai has told the media he's pretty darn certain the company will hit that 13 million sales target. Furthermore, they're sticking to their plans to achieve overall profitability by March 2011 – for this purpose, they're doing some cost-cutting and investing in new technologies, like that nifty 3D entertainment – so we imagine Sony's motto right now is, "onwards and upwards." If they do manage to hit the sales goal, that would mark a significant year-over-year increase; Sony sold a little over 10 million PS3s in fiscal 2008. However, with only 4.3 million units sold in the first two quarters, sales will have to increase drastically in the second half. This could happen, though, given the recent spike and the holiday season upon us.

Lastly, citing a recent Reuters report, Sony's new online content service will expand the Network's focus to include other media like movies, music and books. At this point, it seems as if they want the PS3 to become the entertainment console of choice…you know, all you need in your house is a TV and a PS3, or something like that.

It's all I need in my house Ben, after all "It only does everything!"

Seriously though, the PS3 is a very, very good stab at having one device that can serve as the entire entertainment hub for the living room.

thats there problem though there trying to focous on to many things.
a famous quote from a review i read about uncharted 2 and its so, so true.
"its better to be the jack of 1 trade, and master it than be the jack of all trades and master none"
in other words its better to do one thing and be the best at it, than do many things but not so well.
hell thats why porsche are doing so well, there cares are as simple as can be no high tech gearboxes or any of that crap.
where BMW and mercs are the opposite with all this high tech crap.
and thats why porsche will always be better.
as the famous gene simmons said KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!

How about mastering 3 things and doing 20 other things relatively well? That's how I see the PS3.

edit: In case you were wondering, the 3 things I believe they perfected include games, blu ray movies and media storage.

It really does everything, hence why my PS3 sits in the main living room with the plasma and my 360 is in the study with a small 12 year old tv and cable net connection.

I can see my system (80gb) shifting from my room to the living room w/the recent incorporation of Netflix. My only problem w/this is that my gaming time would probably get reduced; that said, I think a purchase of a 2nd unit would be justifiable. I like the attitude of execs like Kaz and Tretton because it shows the type of corporate culture that gets instilled by Sony.

Sony Is probably already pacing ahead of MS when you factor in the facts that a) xbox was released a whole year ahead b) MS reports units shiped as units sold and c) all the second or third purchases by people who are tired of hardware failures.

That's great news! Hope they sell 20 next year 🙂
I was so going to get me a PS3 Slim at the end of this year but, I have been in and out of hospitals for most of the last half of this year and after moving to a bigger apartment and a higher rent, my budget is blown for this year. Will save for the games coming early next year 🙂
Still this Black Friday's bundle are really sweet, 299 plus two AAA games…

That's very awesome! THE home entertainment system? definitely not. The only main concern I have for the PS3, its owners and Sony is their willingness to push past the PS3. You see, unlike a PC that can handle general computing, the PS3 seriously lacks in page filing and accessible memory. Unless these are addressed, the system will never work out so smoothly for everything.

I'm a little concerned that the influences of the such (Facebook, internet browsers, media players of every shape and size) will cast the PS3 aside once its limitations are hit. In all honesty, I think the 360, with it's more-generally-computer hardware would achieve such feats better than an console that is just beefed up to handle gaming.

I may be wrong.. But I can't help the feeling that I'm reliving the mainstreaming of PCs through this console. Suddenly, 1gb RAM (EDIT: which the PS3 doesn't even have!) isn't enough to multi task online and listen to music while syncronizing to your PSP and downloading your favorite game. This is what people will expect if Sony expects people to put aside their other gadgets to achieve "only everything" from their PS3.

Just an opinion. I'd like to hear what you think of my concerns…

Haven't you heard of the "10 year life cycle" Sony claimed for the PS2? They are backing the ps3 with the same support.

Don't compare Sony and M$ in hardware because M$ is a SOFTWARE company that's what they specialize in (heard of the RRoD? it's a HARDWARE failure their hardware wasn't made well enough to support their software, thats why they overheat and all the games put into the 360 come out scratched up) Sony makes many other things besides our beloved gaming consoles I wont waste time listing the obvious.

Yes a PC allows you to multitask, but obviously as an entertainment system, the PS3 will only be doing one thing at a time, be it gaming, watching movies, listening to music, etc. And a very few people actually hook their PC up to their big screen in the living room. Don't worry about the ram, when properly executed the cell eats up all that extra.

@ Nazty

Don't misunderstand me, I don't think the 360 is worth my money. I can't believe MS has done their consumers with such an obnoxious handicap! I'm just baffled at that. I was referring to it's more PC-based layout.

@World

That sounds feasible. I guess as long as Sony is executing software for it's OS, utilizing the Cell shouldn't be a huge problem… I've noticed minor glitching/freezing in my browser (pre-3.0 firmware) while I had music playing in the background, though… Thats a practice I do all the time! On my old media center, on my PC and sometimes on the PS3 when browsing through game lists and some trailers to get the 52" view! 🙂

the ps3 has full facebook intergration, along with twitter, flickr, youtupe, and whatever else is out there.. it's called the WEB BROWSER. So that answers one of your concerns..

Other concerns are moot point. Xbox 360s "potential" as a full blown computer is erased by it's maker: Microsoft. The 360 is a closed console system. Period. No web browsers, not 3rd party apps, unless M$ can charge for it.

Sony's on 10 year life cylce. And let me tell you, it's a completely different console today, than it was 3 years ago. That's another 7 years of quality improvements to come.

@Demon

That's just because the browser is crap.

FullHD videos, for example, run WAY better on my PS3 than on my father's new PC.

Though comparatively little, the PS3's RAM is entirely adequate, since it doesn't have to run a bloated, broken OS like Windows.

They may well do just that before the end of the year. If not, then may a lightning struck me dead. Though its highly unlikely 'cuz of Sony's superb performance they are in right now. Advertising is in full gear, stellar game releases, and psn content revenues. If they keep it up they will reach their goal.

This should be simple for Sony, look out 360, your lead is shrinking and so is your content.

What did you see that makes you so impressed by 8 Days?

I can understand a Getaway fan wanting the next game, but everything they showed in the original 8 Days video is being done in Uncharted 2, and being done better.

your kidding right?
did you see that petrol tank explode?
the fire effects and scale were 10 times bigger and better than anything in uncharted 2.
the cast they had set up for that was incredible.
if they scrapped it for another game, i probably would not be so excited for 8 days but since it was scrapped for eyepet.
well ive got 2 dogs a cat (they get along fine)
a frog, a carpet python and 2 budgies.
if i want to play with a animal ive got those.
i did not buy a ps3 to play with a furry friend.
