3D Functionality Coming To PS3 Via Firmware Update

I still think trying to play a game like Wipeout HD in true 3D would be almost terrifying but nevertheless, the option is coming.

We had heard that 3D gaming would be coming to the PlayStation 3 next year although details remained sketchy. Well, we now have more of a confirmation of sorts; according to GameSpot , this unbelievable feature will actually be made available to all PS3s via firmware update. We have no idea when this might be, but we know we have to wait for the first 3D-enabled Bravia HDTVs, which are set to be available to consumers towards the end of next year (won't do you much good to have a 3D-enabled PS3 without a compatible TV). During a presentation yesterday, it became clear that every console out there would receive an update that would allow all 3D games to work. That line of futuristic games is still being planned but it's definitely on the horizon as well, so it's a bold new world out there. And remember, this technology will also be applied to certain titles that are already available; we've seen examples using Wipeout HD , for instance, and there are other games that may receive the 3D overhaul.

All of this seems like a huge step for the industry but I really have to get immersed in one of these before I decide for myself. I keep thinking I'll need some time to get…acclimatized.
