The only way I know that yet another year is reaching its conclusion is the advent of Christmas ads on TV (that absolutely delicious Overstock promo lady reminded me), which means Game of the Year Awards are right around the corner.
And Spike TV has announced the nominees and categories for their "2009 Video Game Awards," so pay attention. It's the seventh year Spike has held this event and over the years, we've agreed with many of the awards they've handed out, so it's hardly a mainstream farce. This year's show will take place in Los Angeles and premiere live on Spike TV on Saturday, December 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT (tape delay west coast). Said Casey Patterson, executive producer and senior vice president of Event Productions Spike TV:
"The global appetite and response from the fans internationally has been astounding. Video games, like movies and music, are a universal language and Spike is thrilled that we will now be showing gamers all over the world a glimpse into their future with more than 12 mind-blowing world premieres."
And what game leads the charge heading into this year's Spike awards ceremony? That's right, it's Naughty Dog's stellar Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , with a grand total of 8 total nominations, including the coveted overall Game of the Year. Batman: Arkham Asylum is a close second with 7 nominations (and Mark Hamill gets some recognition as The Joker with a voice nod), and both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 garnered 6 nominations apiece. We're disappointed that Killzone 2 didn't get a GotY nomination but it's still nominated in many other categories…although I am personally offended that Claudia Black didn't get nominated for Best Performance by a Female. She did, however, get nominated for Best Voice…guess I can live with that.

I'm not a big fan of the VGA awards but since it's the most mainstream exposure games can get(for now), I guess I can tolerate it. That being said I agree with most of the nominees except in the hand held department. All of the nominees are freaking DS titles; PSP gets no love 🙁
I still would have picked Bowsers inside story against any handheld game. I even picked it for best rpg.
didnt dissidia final fantasy come out to? but i guess VGA awards are all about which game had most exposure and not the actual best game.
Even with the titles y'all just said, I would still say Scribblenauts beats them, being able to just type in nearly anything and have it come up in the game is pretty freakin epic.

Now I'm a bit surprised that Left 4 Dead 2 is on this list since it was released only 2 days ago. But I'm sure the nominators received early copies from which to base their opinion on. Just kind of feels off.
Based on a preview I saw the other night, I may be picking that one (AC2) up.
I'm suprised U2 wasn't in the online multiplayer one. Oh well we all know CoD will win in that department.
Borderlands! Blah …damn you MW2! lol My vote would go to Borderlands for sure, but I'm not really competitive against other humans, but I love taking out giant bugs with friends.

Sadly, Modern warfare 2 is gonna win game of the year just because its the most talked about and sold more. But then again, well have a bunch more game of the year editions next year.
Best Xbox360 Game Nominees are: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Forza MotorSports 3, HAlO: ODST, and Left 4 Dead 2. Can you spot the not? Two of those are multi platform. See where I'm going with this?

No matter how much uncharted 2 deserves GOTY, MW2 WILL win it because of it being so hyped.
If there ever was anything in this world that was pretty much guaranteed is MW2 being GOTY.

It is spikes VGA show, its all about exposure and MW2 has that if nothing else.

MW2, Left for Dead 2 Came out last week and Assassin's came out on Tuesday and all this games are candidates for Game of the Year……Seriously! I'm not shocked, It's MTV!
Uncharted 2 Is my pick of GOTY! and I hope it Wins all the awards it's nominated under.
Very disappointed that more people do not appreciate Killzone 2. Technically it is pure artistry… anyway, there some people out there who understand what quality and effort really mean!

Amen brother! I am beside myself – they nominate 2 sequels that are hardly anything new to the community and yet leave behind a game that reinvented itself and console FPS's for PS3. At least they couldn't ignore Uncharted 2, and it better win (not that I care one iota for the VGA's)

You mean you didn't know? The game doesn't have real-time water reflections. Do you remember the commercial they made of the bullet in slo-mo? They did a commentary on it saying how they were just getting to know the hardware. Guerilla Games were just getting to know the hardware at that time so its pretty understandable. One thing that makes Killzone2 shine for me is the physics and the lightning.
Technically, Poor_boy, they faked everything, since it's all just data in a processor (or eight).

I am thinking left 4 dead 2 got the nod because it is the only game exclusive to the 360 worth mentioning this year and since there were 2 multiplatform games and one ps3 exclusive, they needed a 360 exclusive. Doesn't matter though. Uncharted will own all games. December 12th cannot come soon enough.

Definitely Mark Hamill, who would have though Luke Skywalker is capable of making such voice.
uncharted 2 will and does own any game right now, but spikes VGA isnt about the quality of the game, its how much exposure/sales it gets.
L4D2 isn't a 360 exclusive though.

I totally agree. I think that U2 is the better game, but I absolutely loved Batman. It was such a shame I couldn't vote for both. But I did vote for Batman for the 360 and Hamill for the voice. Sadly I doubt Batman will get the recognition it deserves.

I think Demons Souls should be in the best of year category. I really think its THAT good. Also I feel that this whole show is just a ploy from Microsoft. They shell out the cash and L4D2 or some other game beats out a PS3 title only throwing fuel to a pre heated and rather debatable fire.
This is mainstream, cheap, and lame. But its all we got so we cant complain. Overall though I hope people look beyond the results. I have good faith U2 will win but then again your all right and MW2 could just snag all awards.
I still wish Demons Souls gets more recognition. The developers really made a refreshing game and I just want them to get something in return for the work they put in. The sales arent mindblowing so you know, some award recognition should make them feel better. If I ever run into someone that worked on the game I will bow to them in honor. Its that good to me. And it really isnt as hard as people say.
The VGAs is a joke. Still remember the first VGAs where its GotY didn't even win #1 place in its own category, yet was still good enough to win best over all. And it was a Madden game if memory serves correctly.
I still hear its constantly been horrible every year.
Now I've played and beaten both Uncharted2 and Modern Warfare2 and I can safely say that if Uncharted doesn't get GoTY that tele station should be boycotted!

Uncharted and Batman will sadly get overlooked and MW2 will rule the awards. That's why I voted that MW2 will be GOTY in the previous poll. I don't think it should because U2 is a far superior game and deserves the award hands down, but it won't matter and MW will bury it in votes.

Some people are still making the mistake of seperating PC and 360. They are both owned by microsoft so if I say a game is exclusive to the 360, I mean to say that it is a microsoft exclusive. I do not count PC as a video game console.
Buddy, I don't count the Wii as a video game console, but that doesn't make it so.
WTF kind of awards are these? Do the votes determine the winner or is it just fodder until a panel decides on the winner? At least with the Oscars and such, popular opinion doesn't matter.
If that's the case (popular vote) then the awards are doomed.
