Update: This has been confirmed: Final Fantasy XIII will be on store shelves on March 9 in the US and Europe. Just remember that you heard it here FIRST. 😉
Original Story:
So we all know Square-Enix has a big announcement on tap for tomorrow (which is now about 15 minutes away, based on Eastern Standard Time). Most have assumed it will involve the Western release date for Final Fantasy XIII , and the big rumor is that due to the rapid smoothness with which the developers are handling the localization process, FFXIII will be here much earlier than expected.
At this point, the only date we have is the placeholder date provided by GameStop, which says June 21, 2010. However, ever since the game was confirmed for a December 17 launch in Japan, Square-Enix has been saying that if all goes well, we could see this massively anticipated RPG in the US before the end of the first fiscal quarter (which ends March 31, 2010). Well, we're here to tell you that such speculation should be proven as official fact in just a few hours time: according to an inside source, we have heard that Final Fantasy XIII will be in North America "in the first two weeks of March," and the expected date is actually March 8. Now, without anything official, we're not going to announce this as irrefutable fact, and there's always the chance our source could be wrong. But said source seems awfully certain about this, and we have to admit, all the evidence points towards this outcome. However, last weekend, I speculated what might happen in March of next year IF…
And that "if" has come to pass. March will now include the biggest RPG of the generation, the biggest action game of the generation ( God of War III ), and the most anticipated racer of the generation in Gran Turismo 5 . Granted, the latter is only confirmed for March in Japan, but series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said it'll be in the US and Europe "not much later." So it seems March is going to be murder on our wallets but even so, we can't wait. FFXIII…just GIMME. 'drools'
Related Game(s): Final Fantasy XIII
Again, with wishful thinking: I so so so so hope the Japanese version includes English subtitles.
Oh, and does this mean the Poll result counts in this article? Seems the majority were correct with their prediction.
i wish too, this could be possible with the generous space on BluRay, just like Bayonetta.
If that is the case, I will just buy the Jap version, and actually, if every JRPG this gen has english in Japanese version, i will buy all in Japanese versions, cuz I do prefer the Jap. voiceover and the overall cover arts and you get hands on the game without waiting for localization

I'd also go for the Japanese version if it has English subtitles. Especially since those copies will have the beta pass code for FFXIV!
@ Jakyl: apparently the FFXIV beta code with FFXIII was a misinterpretation. I don't believe there will be a beta code with it.
Mine Mine Mine. I love you FF.
Is this source the same person who leaked your secret game?
No.
What, since when was Ben's secret game leaked? Tell.
We haven't announced it yet (can't, really).
It just goes smoothly cause it's made in PS3 then ported to Xbox. If only everyone could do that, then we'll be shooting out excellent PS3 games.
Although to me, I would think that will be the last game that Square Enix will be using PS3 as lead platform. So future Final Fantasy games will look worse than XIII, except for XIII versus. Please someone tell me im dead wrong.
Future games will use the same engine only better optimized for each console with shared art assets… so… NO there will not be "worse looking" games in the future… it's amazing really that you would even think that the PS3 has some kind of magical edge over the 360
Has nothing to do with magic. When the PS3 pumps out games with graphical and performance power like uncharted 2 and KZ2 and the best game on the xbox thats touted by you tools is queers of bore 2, with all it's screen tearing and terrible texture loading, it's OBVIOUS the ps3 has the edge. Go troll some were else.
Happy birthday to me, what a March it will be.
GOWIII and GT5 have something to say 'bout this
So does Super SFIV
And White Knight Chronicle have something to whisper.
Even if I have to go broke I'll get FFXIII, WKC and GOWIII.
and so does battlefield BC2
Jeeezz… GOW3,GT5,BS2,FF13… I will be broke after that… :D. But I'm still hoping this date is true. I'm a FFF – Final Fantasy Fanatic 🙂
Ohhh na.
seems like a wasted opportunity to me.
1…2…no it will be released 3 months earlier than expected. Well not really if you think way back when…but that's old news. Hopefully this proves to be true. Because if it is…sniff…(get that onion outta here)…sorry about that it will truly make my month even more epic than it already will be. (there wasn't an onion)…sniff
I'll definitely be getting both.. but God of War will have to wait. This game looks incredible
EDIT: oops replied to the wrong person my bad

God of War III will have to wait. I need my Final Fantasy fix.
Fuck God of War, I'm renting that. FF13 will consume me for months.
I agree with this. As awesome as GOW is, its length can't be comparable to Final Fantasy's legendary 50hrs plus single player mode, at the least. For sure, FF13 will last much longer for me.
However.. GT5 is the one I'm getting first of the three.
i cant believe im hearing this.
if i could only buy 1 game for the rest of my life it would be GOW3
Button Smashing/Gore rolled up into what will probably be 8hrs of gameplay like the last 2 GOW games = Rental for me.
I'd much rather play an RPG, especially a new Final Fantasy where I'm guaranteed at least 100hours.
Exactly.
Length and fun are too different things
GOWIII = fun
FFXIII = a story which has a lot of potential to be great, but a lot of potential to be lackluster
That's why rpgs are hard to design. If the story ain't great/original and engaging the game could just be an afterthought
On DESIGN alone, GOWIII rapes FFXIII
I'm with you Jawk, FF always wins if cash is the issue, but you guys shouldn't put down Kratos. We gotta support our exclusives too.
Yeah yeah. Final Fantasy is our stuff but Kratos will always beat anything =]
Vertigo,
That GoW comment is the new #1 comment I disagree with you the MOST on. Which is funny b/c I always knew you would top yourself somehow. I didn't know how you would do it, but I knew you would. LOL.
I have the GOWIII Demo, its cool but the graphics isn't all that, I think U2 is still better looking, well its a demo so you'll never know. The gameplay is splendid as always.
fun will always beat replay ability for me.
ive always hated RPGs but still i would rather have a 5 hour fun game than a 20 hour boring game.
example resistance fall of man, every single time my cuz comes over we play that, ive finished it like 20 times and am still not bored of it.
but FF XII finished the SP once and never touched it again.
GOW3 may be short but i can see me playing it again and again probably finishing it 4 times in the first 2 weeks, but FF XIII, ill probably play it till ive finished the story mode than take it back.
thats why to me FUN!>length.
thats one thing games are completley lacking these days.
FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ben I thought you said GoW III was delayed to April 1st, or was that some kind of April fool's joke?
Also, the date in Japan mentioned late March, for Gran Turismo 5. Kaz has said multiple times that the release dates for US/Europe is still to be decided and that it'll be based on marketing strategy. But he did confirmed that it would be after, so best guess is at least April. Honestly, I thought Sony's strategy were to spread out these high quality AAA games rather than jamming them in one month, let alone 3!
I just don't see it, but it could very well be possible cause they're all different genres. If not then its March and April we gotta worry about.
I'm passed the point of caring about this game.
I don't know why. There's always a waiting period between FF's and I'm sure it won't suffer from your typical multiplat short comings. Square is a much better dev then most other 3rd party devs.
well, to me, final fantasy games have always be a game that break through barriers in technology. same as all the final fantasy in their times like how it was the best graphics back in ff7. but now that its just settling because of being a multiplatform, its hard to get worked up.
That's alright culo, you'll still buy it.
Anything on a european release?
I've read the announcement is about both western versions.
Release it early and make me a happy man SE.
If you do, then the world will end with you….
Looks like you got your wish, so I won't have to take them down with me when the world ends.
I just crapped in my pants. damn, together with GT5 and GoW. I can hear my wallet "Mercy……"
if you had to drop one game what would it be?
I'll be getting GT5 first, it'll be the first time i seriously try my hand on a GT game, back in GT3 and GT4 I wasn't really interested in it because I was sucked in by NFS:MW and NFS:Carbon and also the Burnout series.
But now things are different as this is gonna be the first racing game in blu ray that's actually gonna be worth buying.(Motorstorm? meh…..less than 20 tracks and 16 cars really just isn't worth it even if it's 8 type of vehicle.)
But I'll probably be getting FFXIII not long after.
