The Gran Turismo franchise has been huge since the very first day it emerged on the original PlayStation. But do you realize just how many people have enjoyed this increasingly realistic driving simulator?
The overall sales figures for all installments across all platforms and all regions have been revealed , and as you can see, the numbers are totally over-the-top. Perhaps surprisingly, the series has sold the most total copies in Europe; the nearly 25 million sold in European regions comprises almost half of the overall sales…which, by the way, is around 53 million. Now, with the continual debate revolving around multiplatform vs. exclusive games, we should point out that Gran Turismo has never appeared on anything but a PlayStation platform. Perhaps because of this focus, most all critics will agree that GT continually sets the bar in terms of authenticity and spectacular visuals with each successive entry. Furthermore, Polyphony has hardly gone begging over the past decade so the belief that a developer can't make a profit producing exclusive titles also appears to be false. Granted, it would sell more if GT5 also came out on the Xbox 360, but would the designer have been able to provide both sets of players with the same experience? And would it have been as good ?
Well, that debate will continue to rage but the point is, 53 million copies sold worldwide is a very big number, and we should congratulate Polyphony on a job well done.
'and we should congratulate Polyphony on a job well done"
Amen to that 😀
i dont getit the game dont come almost until half of next year, but they want keeps us hype until then, tell u what come when u f want, i still play you just remember u just another game.
Was that supposed to be a readable comment?
goodgamer…..but not good grammar =(
left out the "teh"
Forza 3 has half the cars and tracks that GT5 has and it has 2 DVD's already. If somehow GT5 can be downgraded to an Xbox version, it'll take at least 4 DVD's, which is nonsense for a racing game.
"Please insert disc 4 for GTR's"
……………………………………….
HAHA!
"We're sorry, you can only bring 50 cars from your previous save file."
Oh
"and only 10 tracks will be available in this disc, thank you for your patience."
"but would the designer have been able to provide both sets of players with the same experience? And would it have been as good?"
No debate there Ben, the answer is no.
Proof positive that exclusives=best quality=money which means you can make a top quality product and make plenty of money doing it without sacrificing vision.

Right, there's no debate, at all.
Just look at FM3 and GT5 now.
400 cars and 65 or so tracks have already taken two DVDs, and they are not even the same quality as GT5's, let alone in gameplay content.
For this, I never really blame Turn 10 for such flaws, but the ever so hyped Xbox 360, that seems to be holding back the Ps3 this generation in the quality development of games. I doubt PD can make GT5 as polish looking on the 360's hardware, especially the level of content and gameplay I talked about earlier.

imagine how much money you would be banking if you invested in some of these companys years ago.
kind of makes me wish i was born in the 70s and had the ability to see into the future.
im sure back then, no one, not even PD could of dreamed of selling 50M+ copies after only 4 games and 1 demo.
huh, if i went back in time and told them that, during production of the first GT they probably would of thrown me into a funny farm.
Yeah man.
Gran Turismo 5 is a beast waiting to be unleashed!
I expect it to have lifetime sales exceeding GT3 (which sold around 10 million if I'm right)
GT5 will be sweeeeeet!
Night + Day (time of day)
Weather
700+ cars
online
lobbies (friends)
psxe team!
Bring it dude!!!

Nah man. I like to stay positive but Night + Day and Weather are still very confuzzling matters =]
Well GT3 had a night + rain track (though it wasn't really raining)
Races shouldn't really be held when it's raining anyway. But it's ok to have them while the track's still wet. But Leh Mans don't care 😀
Anyway I hope they have weather and time of day. Well time of day is confirmed. So I'm psyched for that!
53 million!
That will instantly become 60 mil when GT5 comes next year.
You know it ^_^
Cant wait…
For an exclusive franchise this is big. It's already halfway of the NFS franchise's 100 million total sales, and this is the series that have appeared in over 15 different titles and over 6 systems worldwide, in about 15 years.
GT has done it in only about 6 softwares (that includes prologues and limited region releases), in one platform per gen, in about 12 years. This is truly remarkable.
Well done PD! Can't wait for your newest game.
What kind of gibberish are you talking goodgamer? EVERTHING IN YOUR STUPID COMMENT MADE NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!!
And the best thing about Gran Turismo is that despite the sales, it's STILL is OVERSHADOWED for it's unparallelled quality. Something that even the GREAT MW2 cannot hope to achieve.
Because NO AMOUNT OF SALES can match up to the perfection that is POLYPHONY DIGITAL.
