The best selling game right out of the gate thus far this generation? Grand Theft Auto IV . But if early projections are correct, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not only top that record; it'll shatter it.
According to early projections , Infinity Ward's excellent shooter has already sold 7 million copies worldwide on Day 1 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. About 4.2 million have been sold in the Americas (3.7 million in the US), and the rest have been scattered throughout Europe. Not surprisingly, the Xbox 360 version definitely leads the way; the projected first-week numbers put the 360 in front at 5.5 million and the PS3 at 3.3 million…those are serious stats, people. Analysts have been expecting Modern Warfare 2 to sell 14 million copies before the year is out and at this rate, that could certainly happen (provided sales remain strong into December). All told, the first week of the game's availability could result in close to 10 million copies sold and that alone is enough to drop one's jaw. Obviously, this is a title that will appeal to the multiplayer lovers out there, although you can bet the single-player campaign isn't anything to sneeze at.
We're towards the tail end of our in-depth analysis of Modern Warfare 2 so you can expect our review very soon. Might it be capable of snagging a super high score…?
