New PS3 Campaign: “The 15 Reasons”

Did anyone really conceive of the day when the PlayStation 3 saw more advertising and marketing efforts than the Xbox 360? Lately, Sony has gone all out and as we've been saying all along, it's a great thing.

We've all seen the TV commercials centering on the new theme, "It Only Does Everything," and you can expect such ads to continue on strong through the holiday season. However, perhaps the most comprehensive promotional video yet can be seen over at the15reasons.com ; a specially designed site that shows the viewer 15 reasons to own a PlayStation 3. It's a European campaign, and this lovely lady guides us through the PS3's features and there are even a few mini-games to test out if you're willing (although if we had to review them, we'd probably have some serious issues). But that's hardly the point; the point is that any consumer can get just about all the information they need through this interactive video, and if things like this start having a big impact, the competition should be worried. Said Christian Noer, Nordic marketing manager for the PlayStation brand:

"This is a modern twist on a traditional ‘elevator sales pitch’. As we broaden the PlayStation’s appeal to a wider group of consumers, we just feel our audience needs a little bit of help selling the full range of capabilities to their wives, mums or girlfriends."

Oh, that's always true. Until gaming can be considered entirely mainstream, the out-of-touch will need plenty of reasons to prove to the "wives, mums or girlfriends" that the PS3 is a whole lot more than a simple gaming machine. But they'll get it…eventually. Just need more stuff like this.

Great to see that Sony's marketing department have come out of the comas they were in the last three years. All the advertising lately is a welcome site. One must wonder where it has been hiding the last few years???

Better late then never. Microsoft has awoken a sleeping giant. They are no longer the only dog in this fight.

No kidding. Any longer and Sony's marketing department would of had to come out with a "Remember Us?" add campaign.

Indeed. It reminds me of what Intel did to AMD after AMDs Opteron gave Intel's Netburst based Pentium 4s a well deserved spanking. Now Intel has produced two new architectures and dropped two process shrinks in the time it's taken AMD to bring one new chip. Ooopsie.

Never wake the sleeping giant.

you mean how ATI is serving Nvidias ass to them on a platter?
there so behind at the moment its shameful, not to mention extremley overpriced.
its a seesaw one side goes up, the other goes down.
what goes up must come down.
though im intrigued to see how their GPU/CPU rolled into one turns out.

Intel is doing a gpu core on a cpu. nvidia is just using there gpu's for massively parallel processing aiding the cpu.

I guess the price is right now, so Sony is cranking up the PR muscle.

Maybe Sony figured no amount of advertising was going to convince people to buy a $600 machine. And those who were willing to spend that money didn't need the machine sold to them.

Also, Sony didn't have the money to spend while producing $800 machines and selling them at $500-600. Plus, they didn't want to sell more units at those prices and increase their losses.

They just needed to sell enough units to keep the developers on board, which they did.

p.s. I always say this, but I NEVER experienced a shortage of PS3 commercials; I've always seen more of them than 360 or Wii ads.

It's like Sony introduced a whole new console. This is how it should have been from the beginning.

Why not just cross these campaigns? Run ours over there and theirs over here along with the regular ones? Maybe make a commercial with her running down the list. My speakers are busted right now but I'm assuming if there's 15 she mentions the free online right? No one ever mentions the free online! The peons must be informed.

I love all the Sony ads. My only problem is that most multi-platform games are being advertised along with the Xbox. Example, Modern Warfare 2 commercials. Also, I've seen multi platform games advertised for Walmart commercials, then being paired with the 360. Same goes for Target Store toy shopping catalogs, the games are being advertised as available for the 360, when they are available on both systems. Can be misleading to kids and parents. Consumers in general i guess, looking to buy a console. They'll think all the good games are only for the Xbox.

Assassin's Creed II should/will be getting PS3 focus when those ads start running.

UK Advertising is laughable, at best you will see 1 a day. Microsoft have their face nearly every ad-break.

Its official Sony finds the most beautiful women in the world. As for the marketing, I agree it feels like a new console launch. The press is positive, sales are up and better yet the games are awesome. This is how it should be, the PS3 has really hit its stride.

I think it really took Sony some time to realize what was making the PS3 seem underwhelming. Sure the marketing was bad (horrible at times) but the real problem was the system was just not friendly/appealing to the average person. Sad as it may seem the majority of gamers like their consoles to look like… well… a console. The original PS3 had a "elitist" image with the glossy surface, all the ports and card slots and while most of us saw that as part of its value "Joe gamer" saw it as un friendly.

Sure the price was a factor but the systems image fed into that, making the already high price seem even more unobtainable. Like how we all can appreciate a Ferrari but the price tag keep the norms in check. Sony ditched everything in favor of creating a multi media device, a true hub for the home. Problem is that’s not what sells a game console, sure its awesome but at the same time counter productive.

The PS2 had a very casual appeal, you could touch it and use it as you see fit it looked like something to play with, but the PS3 was Darth Vader like one of those "cool as hell but don’t mess with me" kind of attitudes. People want something they don’t have to worry about touching if they want to move it, or take it somewhere(our glossy PS3's look like hell when they are all finger printed up, and embarrassing when dusty) So changing the exterior was a big help.

The format war did not help either (though whoever thought HD DVD would take off clearly wasn’t thinking). See the PS2 was a console that played DVDs but the PS3 was marketed as a Blu-ray player that played games and while that sold to videophiles and home theater buffs it left many of our PS2 brothers feeling confused, and PS3 software sales slow.

The last thing was that logo. Look if you like Spider-Man that’s cool but that character owns that font. No other device or IP can use it without the original property coming to mind, thus further making people question what exactly is the PS3. The new logo and box art is an easy throwback to the PS2 while being fresh at the same time. Part of what influences a returning customer is based on brand recognition and your logo is a big part of that, Sony lost that with the Spider-man font as even the PS logo went unused for a while.

It’s not by chance that the new ads have the classic "Play-Stat-ion" at the end of them. It’s easy to play Monday morning quarter back but all of this played a factor to the current up swing for PS3, it was not the 299.99 price alone, because without the new logo and Slim system I don’t think we would be seeing the PS3 as reinvigorated as it is now. The price cut would have moved a few units but Sony knew it had to do more; they could have easily dropped the price back at E3 but knew they needed to revamp the whole system.

Sorry for the wall of text ;p

I love Sony's marketing efforts. They give you reason to buy a PS3. Unlike MS who just try to give you reasons why you shouldn't buy a PS3.

15 reasons?

Ha! Microsoft just gave 1 million reasons….

MS Banned up to 1 million Box Live users for modding their consoles to play warez.

1 million consoles = 1 million reasons marketing campaign for Sony…

whats the problem?
it serves those greedy scum right, thats what you get for stealing.
although i doubt they would be going over to the ps3, most of them will just go buy a new 360.
my ex boss who i absolutely despise got his sons 360 modded for a mere 150 bucks.
2 games downloaded and its payed for itself.

I didn't say it was a problem, in fact I am still laughing to myself about it. Anyone who mods a console so they can steal games deserves everything that they get.

Looks like MS has already told people that the Natal add-on will cost ~US$80 and will be out in Fall 2010. Has Sony said anything about the cost of their wand controller? If it plus the US$35 camera is more, I think there's gonna be something else for 360 fanboys to criticize the PS3 for. Since you need 2 for some things, hopefully they'll have a double-pack for under $50.
