Criterion Designing Next Need For Speed Installment

We've seen excellent installments in both the Burnout and Need for Speed franchises this generation and it seems EA wants to mix it up a little.

Criterion, the developer best known for their awesome Burnout titles, will be taking a crack at EA's long-running Need for Speed series next year. According to MCVUK , the next NFS won't be a sequel to either SHIFT or Nitro but will instead be a brand new title designed by Criterion. EA Games president Frank Gibeau admitted that they had "failed to put adequate resources behind the franchise and, as a result, quality suffered." But he further confirms that this new mystery NFS "has been under development for some time at our award-winning Criterion Studio." So now we're all intrigued…  However, SHIFT fans who appreciated the "shift" to a more simulated driving experience shouldn't be disappointed; it seems quite likely that a direct sequel to that game will be in the works. After all, it was the first NFS in a long time to receive such a warm critical reception and total sales numbers should be satisfactory.

But we're definitely interested in this new NFS by Criterion; we get the feeling it might feel a little like Burnout Paradise , which certainly isn't a bad thing.

I cant wait to see what Criterion does wit this game. I love Burnout Paradise, so I am excited to hear that they are doing another racing game.

On the other hand, I guess we wont see much more in the way of DLC for Burnout.

I wonder if they are going to stick with the sandbox type game, or make it more traditional.

I just want under ground 3, that was the only NFS games I really got into, since High stakes and hot pursuit. Or atleast give us some thing different like I don't know road rash I think they still own the rights to this title, how bout criterion do that instead.

If NFS Undercover ran and looked like Paradise City, I honestly believe plenty of people would have been happy.

Including me.

In a NFS Shift thread here, I commented on how that a Undercover type game with Shift cars/handling while retaining the open world of Paradise City would be perfect. Now that Criterion is developing the next NFS game, I actually see this happening.

Since EA publishes both titles, why not just combine the two franchises into one and call it a day? "Need to Burnout", anyone?

What about "Need For Speed Burnout"? I honestly wish EA would remake Road Rash, or have THQ remake it since my favorite Road Rash is Road Rash 64. I'd be happy if it was just a download on PSN

NFS:Shift was great, I'd rather have Slightly Mad take another crack at it.

Please let it be another Hot Pursuit title!!
That being done by Criterion might just turn out even more intense than the ones before.
Will keep my fingers crossed 🙂

A Hot Pursuit 3 would be pretty amazing.

I thought Criterion were supposed to be working on BLACK 2. Whatever happened with that?

man, id much rather see another burnout title. kinda weird that EA stuck criterion on an IP that has had issues instead of letting them kick ass on the sequel to the already amazing Paradise.

Hot Pursuit 3 or Most Wanted 2 would be amazing. Just don't use the street sign system, it was annoying and too slow to tell you when the next turn was coming up.

Well, Need for Speed series has gone under a siege for the last few years. The last one that was pretty fun was Carbon and Prostreet wasn't the greatest ( some poeple absolutly love it )and Shift dosen't feel like a NFS at all but like a mixture of arcade and simulation that dosen't know which to side on which is a pretty bad combination if you ask me. I think Criterion Games should make a sandbox-open world game with NFS mixed into it and better deeper customizations along too. Online open roam up to 16 players and other neat modes of online play.( with the usual ) A neat storyline and other cool features they want to throw in. I will be looking forward to this next masterpiece.

Yes! Oh yes, indeed. Excellent.

Errmm….I mean. My, that is good news. They did an awfully good job with Burnout Paradise. It will be nice to see what they can do with a slightly more serious racer.

Oh, and YES!

Criterion making a racing game featuring real world cars should prove to be interesting.

However, the NFS franchise just got a recent installment. Shouldn't a Criterion created Burnout come out before the next NFS?

Burnout Paradise is by far one of my favorite games, not only of this gen but ever. at first i wasnt sure how i felt towards it but the more i played it the more i liked it. i ended up getting hooked for like a month straight and that was before any of the expansions they made. i didnt play it for like a year put it back in and didnt even get into the extra island and it was like a whole new game. what they did with burnout was awesome and i would love to see what they could do with another franchise, but i have never bought a need for speed game of any kind so it would have to be reeaaaaallllyyy good.

I have literally played that game for more than a thousand hours. Burnout Paradise was also the game that enabled my wife getting a PS3…she got hooked playing the demo!

Incidentally, I played the Burnout Paradise Demo more than I played Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and I LOVE Gran Turismo. That's how good a game Burnout Paradise is.

It's true. Burnout is brilliant. In game browser, custom music, fantastic multiplayer, it's all there for a mere twenty bucks! The real shocker for me was the wife's interest in it. That was weird but then… it's a really good game.

🙁 guess my hopes and dreams of playing black 2 next year just went down the drain ;'(
and my hopes and dreams of playing a new burnout game next year just went down the drain too ;'(
owell, hopefully it will be similar to burnout, or exactly the same as need for speed most wanted.
thats by far the best NFS game, besides hot pursuit obviously.
speak of the devil, WTF is EA waiting for?
everyone loved the hot pursuit series.
everyone has been screaming at the top of their lungs for a new hot pursuit game, what the …. are they waiting for

Personally, I'd rather have more DLC for Burnout Paradise (a la Big Surf Island), but I'm not one to deny others a game they clearly want.

What the Need for Speed franchise needs is a new Hot Pursuit title. NFSHP2 was absolutely amazing. It was all downhill after that.

All online multiplayer games should have Burnout's easy drive system so you can see which of your friends are online & instantly invite them to join your server instead of sending messages trying to meet on a certain server. All online PS3 games should also have custom soundtracks, open bluetooth headset within your party, PSeye cam support & 1080 graphics. As for me I own BurnOut minus the pay DLC.No reason to play it anymore since I completed all challenges & got Platinum but several people on my friends list still play nothing but BurnOut which seems crazy to me to buy a PS3 for 1 game but whatever floats your boat. I won't be buying any other racing games until they make Road Rash for PS3.If done correctly Road Rash could be the most fun online multiplayer racing game of all time. The Bikes were a nice addition to BurnOut but they lacked Road Rash's combat ability & you couldn't race them in normal races so once the challenges are completed they are worthless. Seperating them on to seperate servers from the cars & trucks was a foolish decision.
