Polyphony Started From Scratch With GT5, Spent $60 Million

It's true that we have to wait until next year to get our hands on Gran Turismo 5 but hey, perfection takes time.

In a new interview with Kazunori Yamauchi at the SEMA Show, we learn a bit more about the behind-the-scenes progress of this massively anticipated simulator. First of all, some stats we already knew about- Polyphony is aiming to have over 1,000 cars in the game, there will be over 70 total track layouts, and each car will boast 400,000 polygons (as opposed to 4,000 in Gran Turismo 4 ). He also tells us they basically threw out everything they used for the previous title and "started from scratch" so in his estimation, the game didn't take very long at all. Interestingly enough, Yamauchi was also asked – quite boldly – what has held GT5 up and he said quite simply that this falls in SCEA's department; as he says, "My job is to create the product, not sell it." I think that's something a lot of people often forget; it's the developer's job to make the game while it's the publisher's job to get it onto store shelves; unless the same company performs both duties, everything is separate.

Oh, and one final thing: all told, Yamauchi estimates that it took a whopping $60 million to create GT5! Well, he's likely confident that they'll make it all back eventually, and we're equally confident. Aren't you?

If anyone can be assured to recoup 60mil it'd be Polyphony and GT, PERIOD. Its only one million sales and GT5 will be several million sales guaranteed.

I think GTAIV was about a $100 million.

It is insane, but they will recoup most of that from just the preorders …

NickO19

i agree it will make it all back without a doubt
but for 60 million to be spent on a fairly 1 dimensional game, not in terms of graphics but rather it is a straight forward racing game, whereas GTAIV had so many aspects to perfect it is easier to understand spending that much

this only builds my hopes that this game will be in a complete league of its own

"Its only one million sales and GT5 will be several million sales guaranteed."

Actually WageSlaves, logically thinking it would obviously have to be more than 1 million sales. For one, they don't sell the games to retailers for 60$ because then retailers would obviously mark up the game further to make a profit.

Also I'm not sure, but there is a chance that the 60 million is just production costs and doesn't include promotion and such.

But I don't see how they can't make a profit… I'm even excited for this and I'm not even a big racing fan! (Burnout 3 was the only one for me)

Edit: One final note here… they definitely have recouped some of the costs through sales of Prologue.

@ Lax,

True, my first post wasn't thought out completely but prologue itself basically paid for GT5 with approx. 4 million sold. Even if markup is 100% it comes out to bout 80mil and that isn't considering the people like me that got it off PSN and gave full profit to Sony.

Either way. They don't have a problem at all. Like I said if anyone can guarantee profits its GT (and Madden).

GTA IV cost 100 million to make, it made that money back in the first day. Gran Turismo probably will too.

GT5 will easily be in the black after a couple of days if you take into account they already made money off 4mil copies of GT5p

Gran Turismo is high level stuff

This is not your regular racing game which you play for two months and then throw away

We'll be playing Gran Turismo 5 for years to come

Can't wait to get my hands on the best racing franchise, period

Next April will be sick!

You are 100% correct here.

On the sim side of things, Forza 2 and NFS Shift only lasted about two months for me. Ferrari Challenge gave me three months of play. I am sure Forza 3 would be the same.

On the arcade spectrum of racing, Midnight Club gave me 3 months of enjoyment, and NFS Undercover about 1 month.

However, GT4 was a game that I played for over a year. It was always the case of one more car.

It's why GT5's 1000 cars is such a exciting proposition. Yes, there will be some cases in which 10 versions of the same car will exist, and that's fine. It just gives me the opportunity to hand pick the best.

With KY stating that all cars will have customization, it's about to be an endless experience for me. It's why I purchased GT PSP, I wanted a start on some of the cars, so I can spend more time with each machine.

Being patient sucks sometimes.

GT4 is such a deep game that I still go back to it. GT5 has more cars, and is just that much better graphically, I have a feeling I will be going back to that game for years to come. Of course I still pop Burnout Paradise back in on occasion and I have literally played 1000s of hours on that game, so it's perhaps not a surprise that I'd think I'll do the same or more with GT5.

I hear you Highlander.

It's all about the depth. I am so looking forward to seeing just how far I can go with the cars in GT5.

Everytime I purchase a car in GT PSP, I wonder to myself on exactly what I am going to be able to that 64 GTO..

Yeah Highlander I play GT4 as much as my PS3 games. once I beat GT4 but I accidentally turned off my PS2 when it was saving, so now I'm beating the game all over again!

$60 million???
How many copies do they need to sell to make up for it?
But I am confident it will sell 8 million copies at least, if it doesn't then I don't know what is wrong with the people who doesn't buy it.

They started from scratch beginning with GT4 or Prologue? I ask b/c some people are saying that GT5 will have almost the same graphics as Prologue but with a few tweaks.

"perfection takes time"

and a whole helluva lot of money it seems too. But I can't imagine a single person that buys it being disappointed so it should be pretty easy to make that money back. But does this mean that the product is done? If he says it's his job to make it and not sell it doesn't that imply that SCEA is sitting on it?

well considering every GT title sells roughly 9 million copies, they should have no problems making there cash back, and then some.
plus the inclusion of a limited edition, which they better do will help increase their profit.
enough talk, now just release the bloody thing!

Qubex

$60 million is a decent sum… I expect this game to sell between 4 – 6 million units. If its lower I will be surprised; I am sure everyone else here would be too… if it tops 8 to 10 million I would also think that would be an extra-ordinary achievement… we'll wait and see.

GT 1-4 combined sold over 50 million. These guys were sitting on a bankroll close to 2 billion. They definitely have the luxury of taking their time to make GT5 as polished as possible.

Selling 1 million copies on the first day is easy! I suspect at least 1.5 million preorders. That's 90 million dollars already. Damn the gaming business is printing money.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

1.5 million pre-orders is $90 million of total spending, but how much of that gets to Polyphony? With a $60 million development budget, PD needs to sell lots of copies to see any return on the investment.

I won't thumb you down cause its your decision, but I just don't understand. GT5 has more realistic simulation, with twice as many cars to choose from, and create your own tracks! In terms of graphics comparison with Forza 3, we'll have to see when the game comes out though.

$60 is nothing to them. They make back billions.
But there is still confusion over the same "20 locations, 70 track layouts" statement. Kaz is really serious about keeping this a surprise isn't he? 😉

There's also something about a 'Rewind/reversing game feature'. We're still weird on that.

And Kaz is a pimp:
"There have been cases where they've shown that interest [in paying to play], but I don't think we've ever shown interest in [accepting money to include certain cars]"

That's a really good point. I forgot about Prolouge…

The only thing there is to say is WOW at the money it took to make it, but if I had to invest 60 mil in something life or death I think that this game would be the safest bet meaning I wouldn't worry in the least that I wouldn't get all my money back from sales and then some. This game will rival Modern Warfare 2 in sales even though it's exclusive just because of the appeal anyone can play it and the franchise has never disappointed, this generation is no time to start they have a chance to show the world this is what an exclusive racing title is supposed to be. I'm sure by next summer they'll have a bundle too Sony's smart they know how to make money. Maybe the MW2 thing is a bit much but there's nothing wrong with optimism and if any game could do it this one could (I would say GoW3 could but it's rating of M would narrow the demographic, though it should sell amazingly too), GT5 is rated E for everyone (I assume) so it's demographic is Ps3 owners period.

I wonder how much was spent on making Killzone 2, it also took 5 years right?
