Movies based on video games haven't fared well in the past but we're starting to see more promising films on the horizon, and that includes Jerry Bruckheimer's big screen adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time .
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, this $150 million production is shaping up quite nicely, as most action/adventure fans have really responded well to the very first official trailer . Here, you will find some kick-ass action sequences, beautiful settings and a solid amount of drama, so our hopes for a worthwhile film have risen a few notches. In our minds, it also helps a great deal that the script was co-written by Jordan Mechner, creator of the very first Prince of Persia title back in 1989, and also the writer for Sands of Time . The film is due out on May 28 and although we initially had some difficulty picturing Gyllenhaal as the Prince, this preview kinda convinces us. Lastly, the latest batch of rumors says Ubisoft will reveal another title in the ongoing franchise right around the time the movie hits theaters. We were big fans of the last Prince of Persia , which still remains one of the better games of the generation, in our opinion.
So here's hoping the movie turns out well; it may be the start of great games spawning great films. …although that may be too much to ask.

Yeah, it actually looks pretty good, can't wait for the inFAMOUS trailer!
inFamous isn't being made into a movie…
Yes it is.
"On July 25, 2009 it was announced that Sony had chosen screenwriter Sheldon Turner to adapt the Sucker Punch game into a feature film in a seven figure deal. Avi Arad and his brother Ari (who are also making an Uncharted: Drake's Fortune movie) will produce"
Ohhh…maybe it will be as cool as that God Of War movie that they were making…oh wait…or as interesting as that Bioshock movie they were making…oh wait…or as badass as that Uncharted movie they are making…OH WAIT…LOOK HOW THEY'VE ALL TURNED OUT…NOTHING.
If it were really a priority for the studio's that want to develop these games then they would be made already or deep into principle production…I am not just telling you, but promising you that this will never be a movie as sad as it may sound to you…
Don't forget District 9…I mean Halo…
i gotta be honest i didnt like gyllenhall but bruckheimer worked his magic and it looks really good! when disney and bruckheimer team up great things happen. need i even mention the huge success of the Pirates series.
but really this is about a great game becoming what looks like a great movie. i actually cant wait to see it, i havnt said tht about a movie adaptaion for awhile!
May I mention that the stories for PotC are terrible at best and they only made so much money because children went to see them so much…
wow what a dumb comment. I loved the stories, and you can say what you want thats fine, but they followed each very well. not to mention everytime i watch the movies i find something i missed! there full of life, and characters just what those movies need!
im not a child and consider myself to be mature, and i seen each one at least once in theaters. not to mention i dont see alot of kids just going i mean it is a family oriented movie but its also very engaging!you cant deny about success good sir!
ur real negative tonight i might add!

Well, aren't you just being rude tonight. I don't think it was a dumb comment. While I admit that I absolutely loved the first PotC film, and I think Prince of Persia looks promising, the PotC follows ups were poorly done in my opinion. Success doesn't mean it was good. In fact, each sequel, while earning more at the worldwide box offices, was rated lower by critics than the original.
So while not everybody will agree with ThePearlJamer, his comment is far from stupid.
welp i said he has a right to his own opinion as stated in the comment i made, but like he has a right i do to. i think it was dumb because as a fan of the series i disagree with him so be it!
you are right though that the 2nd and third films were not as good, but as far as character and story progression go i thought they did a fantastic job! thats my opinion though! and i when i say that you cant deny success, u cant there is a huge fan base, and the majority proves it, any one who says otherwise is in the minority. the movies succeeded and u cant deny that!
but this movie POP looks good

I think you missed my point Bigrailer. What I'm getting at is that it was pretty rude of you to call his comments "stupid" just because his opinion is different than yours. I never said you can't share your opinions, I was just suggesting that you could be more respectful in the future.
And I never said the films weren't successful. I said that success doesn't make them good.
I thought Pirates was downright awesome. Obviously the first is usually considered the best, but I also loved the second one. The third one was only ruined by the fact that Gore Verbinski did too many special effect sequences that added nothing to the movie. And the series added one huge pop-culture icon in the form of Jack Sparrow. Two, if you count Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa. He was amazing.
just like me saying his opinion is dumb, his comment suggested that my thoughts of Pirates was dumb. of course im going to defend one of my favorite films of all time. i cant help but like the movies!
you seem like a pretty logical guy DooSharm, and you have good insight into stuff. maybe i was a little rude, but i felt like he came at me, defense was my gut reaction. another thing though is i understand success doesnt make something good, but you are in the minority when you say it isnt good or u didnt like it, which you are rightful to do so, i respect your guys' opinions. i would think and correct me if im wrong atleast %75 of the people who seen the movies in theaters own the dvd/Blu-Rays as well. that might be exagerated a little but you see where im coming from. id say that alot of people like em and consider them to be good if not great films!
so unless you two are some sort of critics that have control over which movies suck, or dominate, then like me u are just another opinion! critics reviewimg these movies are also like game reviewers, u will always disagree with some of them, and even though i look for things in reviews to lead me in a direction, that doesnt mean i solely trust them. because if i did i obviously would have missed out on 3 of the greatest films ive ever seen because critics were more harsh on the second two films. i dont blame em' though look what they were compared against, THE FIRST FILM! which u admitted was great!
and obviously i agree with you nitekrawler!

Well, I certainly wouldn't call them Oscar caliber like you seem to suggest…you want to see a great movie, go watch Shawshank Redeption
The first PotC film was by far the best, the action scenes were awesome, it was funny and well paced. The story was well-written. The reason why the second two films weren't as good as the first was because though the action scenes were still awesome the plot was incomprehensible and boring.
But the film version of Prince of Persia was co-written by Jordan Mechner, so if we have the awesome story-telling of the first game, combined with PotC's action scenes I think we have a real winner here.
pearljamer-
yeah that film was good, really good.
im not suggesting anything other than the fact that i really thought those movies were great. what ever awards they win great, but my thought it i enjoy them over alot of movies!
Shawshank Redemption FTW.
I don't know about this. Prince of Persia universe is big and compressing it all in one film might be too big of a stretch but the trailer is promising indeed and I like Jake Gyllenhaal.
the trailer looked freakin sweet
lets just hope the actual movie follows through
Hey Sir Ben Kingsley ftw, and well when you toss $150 million and the man with the midas touch (Buckenheimer) I think you come out with a good movie. I always had faith in this one, lets hope it comes through.
edit: if there is a comedy relief sidekick I will hurt somebody.

I watched the trailer and I was actually impressed. I'd played the game a looong time ago and thought I'd check out the trailer to see if it looked any good and now I'm thinkin I might have to go see it.
trailer seemed promising. a nice hint of the 2nd prince of persia game (sand fusing w/body) while keeping most of the story around the dagger (1st game) and its mysteries.
oh hell yes, please release another prince of persia game.
the two thrones was my favorite of the series, the dark prince was a brilliant addition to the gameplay.
last years PoP was really good too, i would like to see another one just like that.
but i want the prince to go back to his nitty gritty days first.
For anyone wondering, the writer for PoP has said the movie story isn't a compression of the game story. Mechner says he wrote an original story for the movie based on the game–he believes most gamers would have been disappointed if the movie simply had a compressed game story.
I have to admit it, Buckenheimer may have a winner here… this will be a nice box office draw. For now though, I wait for AVATAR 🙂
Q!
"i am home"
So there will be a video game based on the movie based on a video game.
But they don't know that we know that they know we know!

We all know how well that worked out for Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game 🙂
that loooooooks siiiiiiick.
I was a little…myeh..about Gyllenhal being "The Prince". He's not Persian, he doesn't even look it. The rest of the movie looks awesome, though. The trailer only showed a touch of comedy in it(it's a trailer after all), and I think Gyllenhal could pull that off well so maybe he was a better pick than I thought.
The new film is being treated as a tentpole film by Disney so they're pulling out all the stops on it, I think they'll treat it nicely
One thing can be said for absolutely sure, the special effects are pretty.

I agree, A white guy to play a persian. that bothers me, there wasn't any any real persian actors or israeli and maybe a latin actors. That's really a step backward.
Lest we forget that flashy graphics a good movie does not make. I've lost count of how many movies I've seen where they showed all the best parts in the trailer. I don't mean to be a pessimist, but COME ON! He had to push a button on the pommel of the dagger like it was some sort of remote?!?
wat the fcuk was that???? i mean a Caucasian guy playing the role of a Persian and wearing this crappy warrior within costume………fcuk………game2movie always sucked & its all same here…..
