Hmm…maybe this is one of the "big surprises" Infinity Ward told us about a few weeks ago.
The rumors that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 might somehow offer the option to play from a third-person perspective have actually been confirmed as truth. Earlier, leaked media showed what appeared to be a menu option for a third-person perspective and then, in a G4TV promotional e-mail sent to Ripten , we hear about "never before seen co-op play from two wildly different perspectives." It didn't take long for IW community manager Robert Bowling to confirm everyone's suspicions but also clarifies that it's "not something you can toggle on and off in ANY game." You can toggle it for private matches online and once selected, everyone will have to play from that view; Bowling just calls it "another cool way to play the game." Clearly, this is a game that thrives on the strength of its extremely polished first-person shooter mechanic but if everyone hasn't noticed, third-person shooters are definitely holding their own this generation. The PS3 exclusive franchise Uncharted and the Xbox 360 exclusive series Gears of War are great examples.
The only question is, will you be interested in trying out this third-person view in Modern Warfare 2 ? Is this something that can be viewed as an appreciated option or little more than an additional gimmick? Your call.

The Uncharted multi-player is very enjoyable so with a touch of Call of Duty to it and I think this is a nice option if you don't want to play it first person. But it's obvious that Infinity Ward have been keeping their fingers on the pulse of what alot of people are looking for in their games now, they see that although still popular, there is a slight decline in the appeal of fps's and tps's are on the rise.
This would certainly bring some of those picky Socom fans into COD.
yup thats the only reason I'm buying it now to try it out
the reason i might get it now
Yup. Implement third person mode into Hardcore Search & Destroy, and there will be a fine chance of the game actually having decent communicative teamwork. For once. All we would need to completely achieve this are players with a Socom-style discipline and certain players with mics.
Let's just hope this game doesn't entirely or majorly rely on an over-the-shoulder perspective.
If it is over the shoulder I hope that bullets shoot out of your gun and not the center of the screen. Quite a lot of games make SP to damn easy with a bug like that, Id hate to see what that does to MP.
Example- In a LOT of "over the shoulder" games you can hide your character completely behind a wall ,safe from everything, and still be able to shoot anyone.
I dont think ill like it at all.
out of all the things that fans were asking for I didn't even know this one was on the list, but cool that they added it anyway
GIMMICK! There's no need for this. I guess it would change it up and be a cool option but it isn't going to be a make or break feature.
cod in third person, i like that, but still is another gimmick 🙂
No thanks. I was ready to cancel my pre-order if the 1st to 3rd person toggle was available in online games.
I want my COD is FPS.
"Your" COD, eih? Do you just want to keep "your" COD in "your" back pocket? It's that kind of attitude that can make you hate the franchise of overration eventually, Silly-Jim =P
Also, did you read the article properly? It isn't mandatory or anything.
Of course I read the article. Perhaps my wording was choosen improperly, but I do not want FPS/TPS playing together. Infinity Ward did it correctly, so all is fine.
Yes. My COD. LOL.
why would i want to play 3rd person shooter without cover?
you can cover. just crouch or go prone. but still, it cant replace more polished cover systems like uncharted series.
I'd really like this! I think it would make it much more enjoyable. I really wish the whole game had this option.
I suspect it'll be gimmicky, but I guess I need to try it out myself before judging.
only 2 more weeks till the online madness ensues…
Interesting sales tactic from IW… maybe they will get there 18 million copies sold as Pratchet predicts…
Q!
"i am home"
The only way i'll see this enjoyable is if comes along game modes and maps that were made for 3rd person shooter. COD games are just too fast paced to play 3rd person on regular maps. But bring it on, i've been playing a hell of a lot of uncharted 2 lately.

Fairly sad gimmick, hopefully it isn't as bad as trying to use third person in Fallout 3 was.

I see some videos and it look awkward like Fallout 3 but I don't know if this is how the final product gonna be like that.
Still has an official hater of this game I'm gonna give IW an applause for trying something different funny thing I see some hypocrites hating the feature that they aren't obligated to use.
bunch of morons.
I see this as a generous gesture. Clearly the more options the better. These guys know what they're doing.
Nowadays, cover system is a need for TPS, but hopefully IW will have something to make up for it.
thats the big surprise?
wow developers need to stop making announcements of announcements that was really disappointing.
still not buying MW2.
borderlands, R&C ACIT and assassins creed 2 is all i need to keep me occupied till next year.
speaking of borderlands, i picked it up yesterday and honestly, never have i swore so much in the space of 5 minutes.
i spent like 1 hour playing the game, and in that one hour i did not spend 10 seconds alone.
honestly in that 1 hour i must of killed 10 million enemies.
i thought fallout 3 was bad.
JESUS FU***NG CHRIST GIVE IT A BREAK ALREADY!
theres nothing more annoying than killing 10 enemies so 10 more appear so you kill those 10 so 10 more appear so you kill those 10 so 10 more appear rinse and repeat.
how the ^%$# are you suppose to get to your objective let alone complete it when every 3 seconds theres 10 enemies trying to kill you.
im sorry i did not realize this was far cry 2.
everything else i really like, this game is far better than fallout 3, except the enemy count, that made me take it back today.
never has a game pissed me off and disappointed me so much in 1 hour, that must be a world record.
to have something so simple and small spoil whats such a good game, a real shame really.
its afro samurai all over again.
Haha, next it's gonna be like this.
Activision: We are currently developing a game that will set the bar in FPS and it's gonna be a whole NEW experience for you gamers, we'll surprise you all when E3 2010 comes.
Then comes E3 2010, the game is revealed to be CoD 6.
Activision: We never said anything bout developing a completely new and different game did we?
lol, yup would not surprise me.
just 1 thing.
isent MW2 COD6?
and on the borderlands front my bloody saved data is corrupt!
that was the final nail in the coffin, i was going to try it again and try to talk myself into liking it, but there is no way in hell im starting all over again.

Well,i've always said, options are always good!
Now if we can just get the "other" guys to do the same thing with their TPS,i'd love to play games like uncharted in first person,it would make everything a lot easier for me…
Good God, no. While adding third person perspective to a FPS may seem intriguing to FPS fans, please understand that the Third Person Shooter fans would be absolutely AGHAST if great TPS games like Uncharted, MGS and/or SOCOM were to go FPS.
It'd be kinda like loving a girl for years, and then finding out that she's secretly retarded.
Honest…when I found out about it being 256 player, huge team experience that's being developed by Zipper, I was GEEKED for MAG.
Then I found out it is a FPS. Now I'm not even sure I'll have time or the inclination to even rent it.
Straight on, CAQ.
MAG would of been way more awesome if it were a TPS [and this is coming from someone who tried the beta].
Wow that's real nice of Infinity Ward.
Would be fun playing a COD in 3rd person 😉
Now if only SquEnix would have an option for turn-based battles in FFXIII.
yeh i luved ffx and its turn based ways
Please please please, Zipper follow suit. I was so interested in MAG until they revealed it was an FPS.
I don't like it, one view or the other should be locked down for all players per game, otherwise it gives an unfair advantage.
I'm still waiting to get my hands on this game.
Lets just say I'm not going to pay for this game BUT play it.

Pissed off PC gamer?
naw Vertigo is a happy PC gamer, and rather savvy if he plans to play a decent game but not reward boasting.
Now if they add 3rd person to single player, I might be interested.
HOLY SH–
Good.
"The only question is, will you be interested in trying out this third-person view in Modern Warfare 2?"
If they include Search and Destroy game mode in the 3rd person, a majority of SOCOM fans will defect and find a new home on Modern Warfare 2.
Not necessarily defect, as only one mode [HS&D] will be similiar to SOCOM gameplay.
Then the game will still have auto-aim, no peaking abilities, unrealistic weapon abilities and also most people who do play COD only care about their own kill streaks rather than winning the game as a team.
But true, there's potential for alot of SOCOM fans to pick this game up now, they might continue to play it…until SOCOM 4 is released. Muhwahwahwhwa.
Ok, this is new. Good for CoD.
forgot to mention socom
It's good that IW are offering this option, but in my opinion, against the sheer flexibility and agility afforded to the player in Uncharted 2 MP, it's going to fall short.
called it.
Hey Ben
Something that you said was so difficult do it seems the COD boys are doing it. Remember that email I sent you "Why cant they make it BOTH and have the best of both world and everyone would be happy"? It seems to NOT be so hard after all.
