Well, if it weren't for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , we'd say Guerilla's unbelievable shooter was a lock for Game of the Year. But it's taking a little too long to find its way into the hands of PlayStation 3 owners, as far as we're concerned.
A reader has pointed us in the direction of the total sales numbers over at VGChartz and while none of these statistics are official, they're usually relatively close to reality. And the reason it's interesting is because it appears that Killzone 2 has finally sold 2 million copies worldwide, which – in most respects – can be considered to be a great success. But given the immense quality of that game and the fact that it really is the defining FPS of the generation, one would assume it should be closer to 4 million by now. The game has actually sold a little more in the European regions, even though it appears that the Americas are only a few hundred thousand behind. Unfortunately, the Japanese sales are almost non-existent, but that probably shouldn't surprise anyone, as FPSs have never really caught on over there. It should also be mentioned that KZ2 released at a time when everyone was still demanding a price cut for the PS3 hardware, so more people missed out. However, if you're one of the many PS3 owners who haven't yet tried this game, you should know you're passing on one of the most impressive interactive experiences ever…
Well, maybe it'll see more of a resurgence for the holidays; you never know. The PS3 exclusives – also including Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time and inFamous – have really shined in 2009 and next year, well, we've got the likes of God of War III and Gran Turismo 5 . Ah, it just continues.
Related Game(s): Killzone 2
two million it's not that bad but i expected it to sell a lot better
To me those are really depressing numbers; considering that ODST sold more than that in a week and it has no where near the quality, effort of polish as Guerrila's gem.
Halo has a much, much, MUCH larger fanbase. And its one of the only 2(3?) 'good' exclusives the 360 fanboys have.
This game is awesome in every way. It is sad that a game this good sold only 2 million in 8 months, and over price dlc like Halo ODST sold this much in the first weeks. This is the worst generation thus far for me.
Got my copy sitting on my bookcase 🙂
Good job GG and Sony, I think all that negativity about the controls being to weighty might have killed some of the hype it had going for it, to many people complaining especially coming from N4G site, nothing but a bunch of young teens bad mouthing it, they have no life on N4G
yeah, I guess some people like to just float around through the air rather than run like a human with legs.

What's amazing about this game is that the multiplayer [despite it having less people than the 60 man Resistance 2 and 256 MAG beta] is more havocking than any other FPS I've played.
The date of KZ2's release was a nice push for the PS3, but it was far into a month that we'd all forget about. As HeXeN said: it's depressing.
They could of either had it released for last Christmas, or released around about now to have even more of an impact, but meh; this game has given me fun, fulfilling days anyway >=D
HEADSHOT FETISH. Too bad I'm utterly crap at this game now =
It's bad when you figure theres 25+ (or whatever) PS3 owners that exist and that in my opinion at least half of them should own this game, 2 mil looks sad when you look at how epic it is.
One thing though is I think most FPS nuts are xbots down to the core. Been brainwashed into thinking COD or HALO STD is the pinnacle of FPS.
Ha! So true, Killzone was by far one the best of 09. Compared to Halo ODST in which you could beat in one sitting, without breaking a sweat at $60, mind you.
It also shows what I've said 'bout Playstation fans
Playstation fans at their core love variety. They're not limited to FPSs and a few racing titles like fans of that other console
We love platformers, we love fighters, we love action/adventure.
And it's not only its fans, Sony as a brand shoots for original titles which are not all FPSs (though they've been leaning that way lately). Infamous, GOWIII, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, etc.
Oh my god World, I said the exact same thing about xbots and fps' on the forums and you all reamed me out for being stereotypical because "most 360 users owned a PS2 and were hardcore rpg gamers"
I didn't ream ya, the forum people are just really weird, they are like rich white people in the south who pretend slavery never happened or German tour guides who won't point out Nazi headquarters.
I personally have no idea why anyone would have decided to go with the 360 as an RPG machine early on this gen. The sane people expected rpgs to come to the PS3. And I consider a "hardcore gamer" to be one who can play more than one or two genres.

I have wanted to play an FPS for some time now because I've never really gotten into the genre but have wanted to recently and wondered if this game was a good place to start… any suggestions?
Absolutely; I am sure my mates here will support me in encouraging you to go out and purchase Killzone 2; it something you really really need in your collection.
Q!
"i am home"
I was just like you..I had only played one FPS on the ps2 before I bought KZ2 and it was a orgasm for me…since I had never played a high quality FPS before and now I will only be able to buy MAG and the next "KZ2"…but what I want to say is if you have never gotten into a FPS before this is beyond the perfect game to do it with.
Killzone 2 for me was a game changer; simply put, I don't look at any other FPS now. MGS4 aside; it will be difficult for me to accept multiplatform FPS now that I have seen what it means to actually make a "real" game.
Q!
"i am home"
This is really sad that more people did not buy this game.I mean if it did not have the hype that it did then I could see why it only sold 2 million.
2 million is good for a new IP,but KZ2 had a lot of hype since 2006.If Sony had the game ready back in 2008 i think that it have sold more and maybe if they had promoted it better when it finally released.
Then you got the fact that RE5 and SF4 released around the same time which of course had millions of people waiting for them.Still, there was nothing else exclusive on the PS3 when KZ2 came out.I am disappointed in PS3 owners. This game is easily better than any COD game.

Killzone 2 it is then ^_^ hopefully I can afford it with the upcoming game tsunami!
(Your input has been invaluable to me fellow gamers just wanted to say thanks ^_^)
Killzone 2 is tense, gritty, and epic, both single-player and online.
Playing Killzone 2 is like blasting Metallica in the middle of freeway-traffic, finding a break in the cars, opening up the gas and flyin' down the road.
You CANNOT own a PS3 and NOT try it out…
OMG I AGREE 100000%. I was reading everyone's comments and wanted to reply but I was too lazy, until I read what you put about Metallica. I love love love them so much. Can't wait to see them in like 3 weeks, but yea you're absolutely correct, it's just something you HAVE to do!11
It would be TOO COOL if in Killzone 3 they had "One" from "And Justice For All…" playing in the background somewhere!
(Homer Simpson voice)
"Mmmm….Metallica and Killzone…."
(tongue-hangs-out,eyes-glaze-over)
Still playing the MP 🙂
PSN ID: wenaldy
Killzone 2 and Guerilla Games deserve better.
I played Killzone 2 yesterday. I never beat the campaign on Elite. So now I'm gonna try a complete on stage per day. Then I'm getting back into the MP.
Sounds easy in theory.. but
Gooood luck on the mission before entering Visari Palace at the end =D
all i can say is be prepared to break your TV.
i thought elite was not going to be hard, i found everything up to the train level easy.
after that was a complete bitch!
and the cruiser level, well im still not past that.
Elite difficulty is easy….if you find the right routes to go through. I beat elite mode 2 times already. well, i had to beat it 2 times. beat it once got the trophy, ps3 died and didnt sync it. When i got it back, had to beat it again to finally get my platinum trophy. I agree that the train was the hardest part but again if you learn the trick to beat it, its pretty easy. pick up rocket launcher, shoot one at tank, shoot one on the floor between all the soldiers, pick up more ammo, fire the last 2 at the tank while retreating to the last train cart then when it blows up grab a different gun and finish off the other soldiers left.
visari palace entrance was easy too. tips, theres a tunnel near the end of the long battle area. use it to get to the checkpoint near the machine gun bunkers. At the Visari palace door, first thing you need to do is take out the 2 helgast machine gunners. approach the opening on the right and move forward as much as you can. you should be behind the fence in front of the machine gun. Take out all enemies on this side and all the enemies on the left side also. once left side is clear, run all the way to the left, should be under the machine gun platform. From there, take out all helgan in front of you then move close to the last fence opening. all you need to do now is to throw a couple grenades by the door to clear them out then hide behind the final cover and kill the ones coming out of the door. Now all you gotta deal with is the radec scenario and its a pain no matter which difficulty.
Have this beauty in my collection
For someone who's not the biggest FPS fan, this game really surprised the heck out of me.
You know how most FPSs feel like "oh it's a FPS with some storyline and that's it." Killzone is different, it actually feels like the game was built to be epic, to have a STRONG storyline with an amazing emphasis on campaign mode.
Too many think that all FPS games should be all 'bout the online multiplayer mode. KZ2 is an amazing story-driven game and it deserves a lot of respect for that. Not many FPSs push story very well.
The amazing graphics is something to behold too. Up there with Uncharted 2 and MGS4
Well, according vgchartz LBP is currently on 2.5 million copies. So it's about 500k behind at the moment. But K2 was released 6 months after it. Perhaps Killzone will get liftime sales of close to 3M?
the media are to blame for this.
they hyped up this game so much its not funny.
i remember weeks before release every single website had like 2 articles on KZ2 per day you just could not get away from it.
i would like to see what would happen if KZ2 was never spoken about, they would announce it, show a video here and there but nothing about the graphics or so was allowed to be mentioned.
only in the review should they be allowed to mention such things just to get the mainstream info on the game.
than market the hell out of it, something sony does not know how to do.
if they did something like that, i think it would of made such a larger splash because no one would be expecting it.
when your expecting crap, you cant be disappointed.
when your expecting the reinvention of the wheel, you can be disappointed.
and thats what happened to KZ2, it was touted as the second coming of christ.
with that set a side though, i loved the controls and must say i found it a hell of allot easier to pull off shots.
normally when im playing a FPS i like to have the sensitivity down to the minimum because i get really twitchy and if i have it to high i go from one side of a enemy to the other, and cant line the shot up fast enough.
with KZ2 i never had that problem, i found lining up shots to be allot easier, and pulling off head shots was a piece of pie.
and the MP is unrivaled, as far as im concerned no game, not even MAG has a better online mode than KZ2.
i thought U2 would of changed that but i really dont like uncharted 2s MP for some reason, KZ2s is still my favorite and probably will be till KZ3
it was hyped over a little more than maybe i feel it should have been
a little more?
that game got more hype than uncharted 2!
as i said before it would be interesting to see what would happen if the media kept their mouth shut till review time.
i just find every single game that gets hyped to high heaven im disappointed in, and every game that no one talks about i love to death.
i know im going to get stringed up for this, but i had more fun playing infamous than i am uncharted 2.
infamous had so little hype, before i played the demo i was not going to buy it, i thought it would be repetitive boring and crap.
than i played the demo and shat my pants, and cant waited till release.

Media is to blame for this? No. The first Killzone is to blame for this.
I dont know how many people feel the same as i do about this, but Killzone 2 really changed how i looked at the FPS Genre. Before i sunk my teeth into this game, i had made a pretty solid decision (or so i thought), branding CoD4 as my personal favorite FPS. I didnt believe that game could be bested… even though my hopes for Killzone 2 were pretty high.
But when i actually played the game, i was proven wrong. Looking past the weighty feel of the aiming – which i believe could have been done in a better feeling way – I realized that there was more thought necessary to play this game, mainly because of the controls… they felt fine if you actually spent a bit of time with them BTW, and the production value was extraordinary. When i returned to CoD, while it is good, it didnt feel as… full i guess you can say. Coupled with Activision's behavior, Killzone 2 has actually made it a bit difficult for me to get excited for MW2, which i would have otherwise been very excited for
not suprised bout the europe thing, it was made and launched first here.
Also, it's already a Platinum title there. It'll sell some more copies once it's a Greatest Hit here (which should be soon).
Don't forget Heavy Rain in 2010!!!
Here's hoping it doesn't get censored in Australia, I've already had to import Left 4 Dead 2 from UK. Being an Australian gamer really sucks.
The prices that you all pay, the censorship rules and release delays…..
that does blow 🙁
its about bloody time.
Poor sale for a great game, many PS3 owners out there aren't supporting their system.
Even if you buy your multiplats for your 360, at least support the exclusives the PS3 have.
Hopefully with PS3 sales taking off, more new users will buy KZ2. This was my personal GOtY thus far.
I really fear that this game (along with many other exclusives) got overlooked due it being released at a time when PS3 sales were more stagnant in anticipation of a price cut.
If KZ2 were released on Xbox, the gaming public would never have shut up about it. 🙂
FWIW, I think the sales suffered from not ENOUGH hype. There wasn't a real media blitz after its release. A lot of people have never even heard of it! Maybe Sony is starting to figure out the importance of advertising now.
Xbox 360 couldn't handle this game.
I want the game, but its been out for a while now, so I'm waiting for it to become a Greatest Hits so I can save a few bucks. At 2 million sold, it should soon. Don't hate me for being thrifty…..besides, the money I save goes to Sony eventually anyways.
It's already a platinum title: http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/11399596/Killzone-2/Product.html
Depends where you live vgWacky.
Over here in North America, they're called "Greatest Hits", as opposed to "Platinum". Unfortunately, KZ2 hasn't come out as such yet and still goes for about $50. Seeing that it's a Platinum in the UK reaffirms my urge to wait for it to become a GH here.
KZ2 is still worth 60 dollars at this point…I have looked at other FPS and they have nothing on KZ2
People complain about the feel of the controls and I don't see why…they are more realistic…you think in body armor and packing arms and ammo you can jump 4ft in the air? your insane, this game felt great because it felt more realistic
The first Killzone was overhyped and turned out to be failure. Killzone 2 was showcased when back when Sony scared the hell out of everyone with a $600 PS3 price tag. Then it took years to come out. I think despite the awesome demo, many were still skeptical as it looked like it was going to be a repeat performance. The way I see it is GG should be very happy with 2 million sold. I also believe this game will have major legs and will eventually make it into the hands of most of those 25 millions PS3 owners. Just not right away …
